MUST FOLLOW https://arctic-news.blogspot.com/ Atlantic ocean heat threatens to unleash methane eruptions  The above image shows monthly Atlantic surface temperatures through February 2024 (background image), highlighting the potential for the slowing down of the Atlantic meridional overturning circulation (AMOC) to contribute to more heat accumulating at the surface of the Atlantic and methane to erupt from the seafloor of the Arctic Ocean. As temperatures rise, feedbacks are kickong in with greater ferocity, resulting in increased ocean stratification, less reflectivity, heavier melting of Greenland's ice and freshwater runoff from land and rivers, all of which can contribute to slowing down of AMOC. While this is causing less ocean heat to reach the Arctic Ocean at the moment, a huge amount of ocean heat is accumulating in the North Atlantic that threatens to abruptly move into the Arctic Ocean. The inset illustrates that, as people's emissions heat up the air and oceans, strengthening wind, ocean currents, rainfall, etc., the potential increases for a lid to form and spread at the surface of the North Atlantic. As temperatures rise, more evaporation takes place and more rain falls further down the path of the Gulf Stream, i.e. an ocean current that extends into the Arctic Ocean, as part of AMOC. This rain further contributes to the freshwater accumulation at the surface of the North Atlantic. This page further discusses formation of a cool freshwater lid at the surface of the North Atlantic and the contribution to this of Jet Stream changes. The image below shows that the Jet Stream reached speeds as high as 455 km/h or 283 mph north of Washington on February 18, 2024 03:00 UTC, with Instantaneous Wind Power Density as high as 387.5 kW/m².  The danger is that, due to strong wind along the path of the Gulf Stream, huge amounts of ocean heat will abruptly get pushed into the Arctic Ocean, with the influx of ocean heat causing destabilization of hydrates contained in sediments at the seafloor of the Arctic Ocean, resulting in eruptions of huge amounts of methane. When Hurricane Lee’s barometric pressure went off a cliff on Thursday, dropping an astonishing 61 millibars in 18 hours, winds jumped from a relatively modest 80 miles per hour in the early morning to 160 mph by evening. Some surprised lay observers commented on social media that Lee had “jumped over” several categories, straight to a Category 5. Lee indeed is the first Atlantic Cat 5 of 2023, but this hurricane is just one of eight tropical cyclones to attain this ill-famed intensity in the Atlantic over the past eight years. Since the beginning of the century, 16 Category 5 hurricanes have formed in the Atlantic—a rate slightly higher than one every year-and-a-half. In contrast, from 1970 to 2000 only six Atlantic systems were able to reach Cat 5. That was a rate of 1 every 5 years. That means that the frequency of category 5’s has tripled compared to those last 3 decades of the 20th century. DRIVE HURRICANE / CYCLONE / TYPHOON POWER!  It’s not just the Atlantic. Hurricane Jova in the eastern Pacific was a Cat 5 this week. The Australian region had two Category 5 cyclones earlier this year, and another in December 2022. Also in 2022, the West Pacific had two Super Typhoons reach that maximum category. More storms reaching category 5 intensity is not to be confused with a higher overall count of tropical cyclones. It is incorrect to say that the planet is experiencing more active—in terms of named systems—hurricane, typhoon, and cyclone seasons. Scientists never have predicted a greater number of tropical storms due to any of the changes in climate that we’ve been experiencing. What we are seeing is that a greater proportion of the tropical storms that do form are going through rapid intensification cycles that often result in hurricanes becoming potentially catastrophic category 4 and 5 systems. It’s not hard to figure out why: global heating. Tropical disturbances feed off of warm water. The temperature of the surface of the ocean generally needs to be above 80 degrees Fahrenheit for storms to prosper. Once a hurricane forms, the ease at which its winds can evaporate water and lift it in gaseous form until it cools and condenses is enhanced if it’s moving over hotter water. When water vapor condenses back into liquid form, energy is released into the hurricane which strengthens it further. For every 1 degree Fahrenheit increase in water temperature, potential storm intensity can increase by 10%. Given the record Atlantic marine heatwave unleashed during the hottest northern hemisphere summer ever recorded on the planet, perhaps a Cat 5 should’ve been considered fait accompli. Despite these concerning trends, the one good thing about Lee is that it’s unlikely to impact any land mass while it’s at its peak intensity, which may have already passed. What happens next week once it’s moving north across the western Atlantic is still unknown, but Lee is being closely watched from New England to Canada to Bermuda.

To reach the top of the five-point Saffir-Simpson Scale, a hurricane’s peak winds must exceed 155 miles per hour. Irma’s have reached 175 miles per hour, enough to do catastrophic damage. Even a small bump up or down the strength categories can make a big difference in destruction seen at landfall. And the difference between the top and bottom of the scale is much larger than the category numbers might imply. But for all its savage power, a Category 5 hurricane is highly dependent on the environment around it to maintain its power. Hurricanes draw their energy from seawater that has been heated to at least 80 degrees Fahrenheit. To form a Category 5 monster, a storm must not only be fed by warm waters but also can’t encounter too much upper-level wind, known as wind shear, that can break up the development of a hurricane’s counter-clockwise rotation. Unfortunately for the people in the path of Irma, conditions at present are very favorable for the storm’s continued development. The website Weather Underground reports that the ocean water ahead of the hurricane is a very warm 84 to 86 degrees Fahrenheit. And wind shear is expected to be low for the next several days. Still, Irma’s intensity could fluctuate thanks to the complex mechanics of powerful hurricanes. Intense storms often undergo a phenomenon known as an eyewall replacement cycle. The eyewall, which contains a hurricane’s most powerful winds, surrounds the calm center of the storm. As a powerful storm travels across open water, a second eyewall can encircle the existing eyewall, causing the first eyewall to disintegrate and weakening the hurricane’s highest winds. On the other hand, a hurricane can re-intensify after this eyewall cycle is completed if waters are still warm and wind shear is low. A powerful storm also can lose strength if it passes over a large island. If Hurricane Irma crosses Hispaniola or Cuba, it could be greatly weakened. Only three hurricanes have made landfall as a Category 5 in recorded U.S. history. A total of 32 reached Category 5 status at least temporarily in the Atlantic Basin since 1924.
When the 1935 Category 5 hurricane hit the Florida Keys, low-lying coral islands off the tip of Florida, very few people lived there. Today, Hurricane Irma poses a grave threat to the Keys. There is only one road in and out for the island’s 75,000 residents, plus tens of thousands of tourists. By law, every 6-month-old Danish baby is guaranteed high-quality preschool, and parents can’t be charged more than a quarter of the cost of those services. Parents who can’t afford it? Even then, the program only has enough funding for a half-million slots nationwide. But the Robinsons make too much to qualify, so they’ll either have to park little Rachel with Dale’s mom, or one of them will have to get a second job to help cover the cost of daycare. That little luxury could set the Robinsons back as much as $22,000 a year.  Danes receive a child benefit which starts with $225 a month at birth, and goes to $140 a month from age 7 to 17. EMPLOYMENT Now, some people say those generous benefits create a culture of dependency and discourage people from looking for a job, but 73 percent of working-age Danes have a paid job, compared with 60 percent of Americans. Emma won’t pay anything for delivering her baby, but Rachel will pay around $5,000 out-of-pocket for a normal delivery. Rachel also lives in the only advanced economy that doesn’t mandate paid family leave. She can take some unpaid time, but for most women, there’s no guarantee that her job will be waiting for her. One in four American women quit or are laid off when they have a baby, so they lose seniority and end up with an uneven work history. The image below shows the situation over the years through March 12, 2024, when the average daily surface air temperature was 26.822°C and 1.3°C above 1979-2000.  By comparison, the highest temperature on record was reached on April 24, 2016, when it was 26.827°C, i.e. a little bit higher, but then it was just 1°C above 1979-2000, as the above image also shows.  Note that the anomalies in the above images are calculated from different bases. When calculated from a pre-industrial base, anomalies will be higher. The danger is that tragedy will unfold over the next few months, as temperatures look set to exceed the 2016 peak in the tropics and cause widespread loss of life of people, livestock and wildlife, crop failure and ecosystem collapse in the tropics.
