Achal Prabhala and Leena Menghaney
This is what happens when a third of humanity depends on one manufacturer for Covid jabs. We need to waive patents now . . . .
The billions of AstraZeneca doses being produced by the Serum Institute in India are not for rich countries – and, in fact, not even for India alone: they are for all 92 of the poorest countries in the world.
Except they’re now being treated as the sovereign property of the Indian government.
How did we get here? Exactly one year ago, researchers at Oxford University’s Jenner Institute, frontrunners in the race to develop a coronavirus vaccine, stated that they intended to allow any manufacturer, anywhere, the rights to their jab. One of the early licences they signed was with the Serum Institute, the world’s largest vaccine manufacturer. One month later, acting on advice from the Gates Foundation, Oxford changed course and signed over exclusive rights to AstraZeneca, a UK-based multinational pharmaceutical group.
AstraZeneca and Serum signed a new deal. Serum would produce vaccines for all poor countries eligible for assistance by Gavi, the Vaccines Alliance – an organisation backed by rich countries’ governments and the Gates Foundation. These 92 nations together counted for half the world – or nearly four billion people. India’s fair share of these vaccines, by population, should have been 35%. However there was an unwritten arrangement that Serum would earmark 50% of its supply for domestic use and 50% for export.
The deal included a clause that allowed AstraZeneca to approve exports to countries not listed in the agreement. Some countries which asked for emergency vaccine shipments from Serum, including South Africa and Brazil, were justified: they had nothing else. Rich countries like the UK and Canada, however, which had bought up more doses than required to vaccinate their people, to the detriment of everyone else, had no moral right to dip into a pool of vaccines designated for poor countries.
Paradoxically, when South Africa and India asked the World Trade Organization to temporarily waive patents and other pharmaceutical monopolies so that vaccines could be manufactured more widely to prevent shortfalls in supply, among the first countries to object were the UK, Canada and Brazil. They were the very governments that would later be asking India to solve their own shortfalls in supply.
The deal did not include restrictions on what price Serum could charge, despite AstraZeneca’s pledge to sell its vaccine for no profit “during the pandemic”, which led to Uganda, which is among the poorest countries on Earth, paying three times more than Europe for the same vaccine. (An AstraZeneca spokesperson told Politico that the “price of the vaccine will differ due to a number of factors, including the cost of manufacturing – which varies depending on the geographic region – and volumes requested by the countries”.)
As it became clear that the western pharmaceutical industry could barely supply the west, let alone anywhere else, many countries turned to Chinese and Russian vaccines. Meanwhile, the Covax Facility – the Gavi-backed outfit that actually procures vaccines for poor countries – stuck to its guns and made deals exclusively with western vaccine manufacturers. From those deals, the AstraZeneca vaccine is now the only viable candidate it has. The bulk of the supply of this vaccine comes from Serum, and a smaller quantityfrom SK Bioscience in South Korea. As a result, a third of all humanity is now largely dependent on supplies of one vaccine from one company in India.
Cue the Indian government’s involvement. Unlike western governments, which poured billions into the research and development of vaccines, there is no evidence that the Indian government has provided a cent in research and development funding to the Serum Institute. (This did not stop it turning every overseas vaccine delivery into a photo-op.) The government then commandeered approval of every single Covax shipment sent out from Serum – even, according to one well-placed source within the institute, directing how many doses would be sent and when.
The Indian government has not publicly commented on its involvement in the vaccine shipments and has refused requests for comment.
Last month, faced with a surge in infections, the Indian government announced an expansion of its domestic vaccination programme to include 345 million people, and halted all exports of vaccines. About 60m vaccine doses have already been dispensed, and the government needs another 630m to cover everyone in this phase alone. One other vaccine is approved for use – Bharat Biotech’s Covaxin – but it is being produced and utilised in smaller quantities. As more vaccines are approved, the pressure on Serum might decrease. For now, however, the bulk of India’s vaccination goals will be met by just one supplier, which faces the impossible choice of either letting down the other 91 countries depending on it, or offending its own government.
The consequences are devastating. To date, 28m Covax Facility doses have been produced by Serum for the developing world – 10m of which went to India. The second largest shipment went to Nigeria, which received 4m doses, or enough to cover only 1% of its population. Given the new Indian government order of 100m doses, further supplies to countries like Nigeria may be delayed until July. And given the Indian government’s need of 500m more vaccine doses in the short run, that date could surely be pushed out even further.
This colossal mess was entirely predictable, and could have been avoided at every turn. Rich countries such as the UK, the US, and those of the EU, and rich organisations such as Covax should have used their funding of western pharmaceutical companies to nip vaccine monopolies in the bud. Oxford University should have stuck to its plans of allowing anyone, anywhere, to make its vaccine. AstraZeneca and Covax should have licensed as many manufacturers in as many countries as they could to make enough vaccines for the world. The Indian government should have never been effectively put in charge of the wellbeing of every poor country on the planet.
For years, India has been called “the pharmacy of the developing world”. It’s time to rethink that title. We will need many more pharmacies in many more countries to survive this pandemic.

OPENING THOUGHT TO PONDER: WHEN I WAS IN MY SECOND YEAR AT THE UNIVERSITY OF UTAH (UOFU), HAVING SPENT ONE SEMESTER IN THE CATHOLIC SEMINARY AT AQUINAS COLLEGE, PRIOR TO THE UOFU, I SAT IN A YEAR-LONG DOCTORAL SYMPOSIUM IN POLITICAL ECONOMICS UNDER THE THEN HEAD OF THE UOFU ECON DEPARTMENT, E. “KAY” HUNT. DURING THE SECOND QUARTER OF THIS THREE QUARTER DOCTORAL SYMPOSIUM, I HAD READ SIGNIFICANT AMOUNTS OF EVERYTHING FROM THE UTOPIAN AUSTRIAN SCHOOL (VON MESIS, VON HYACK, VON NEWMAN, ETC), THE UTOPIAN COMMAND SOCIALIST SCHOOL (MARX, VEBLIN, ETC.) AND THE NORDIC MODEL ECONOMISTS. KAY IS ONE OF THE TOP NORDIC MODEL ECONOMISTS IN THE US.
NOAM CHOMSKY NOTABLY, HAS BEEN MY INTELLECTUAL MENTOR. HE IS THE FATHER OF “THE NEW LEFT,” AND THE MOST NOTABLE “NORDIC MODEL SUPPORTER.” HE DESTROYED BILL BUCKLEY ON BUCKLEY’S SHOW “FIRING LINE” IN 1969, WHICH WAS THE SHOW I SAW IN 1978 THAT REALLY SOLD ME ON “THE NEW LEFT.” BILL WAS SO DESTROYED HE NEVER INVITED NOAM BACK! I ASKED KAY, SO AFTER STUDYING ALL OF THESE “UTOPIAN THEORETICAL MODELS,” THAT ASSUME “THE ENLIGHTENED PEOPLE,” EITHER BECOME HEADS OF CORPORATIONS IN THE “FREE MARKETS.”
ALTERNATIVELY, THE “ENLIGHTENED INDIVIDUALS” OF “THE COMMUNIST STATE,” MAKE THE IDEAL WORLD FOR EVERYONE, THROUGH ALL GOVERNMENT OWNERSHIP.
WHAT DO YOU THINK? KAY! HE SAID JIM, IN THEORY, AS YOU HAVE LEARNED, EACH OF THESE THEORETICAL SYSTEMS CREATE “IDEAL ECONOMIES,” WITH “ENLIGHTENED INDIVIDUALS.” AS WE HAVE DISCUSSED, IT IS CALLED “THE CONVERGENCE THEORY.”
HOWEVER, IN MY OPINION, THE PROBLEM IS THE OLD SAYING . . “ABSOLUTE POWER AND WEALTH CORRUPTS ABSOLUTELY!” . . EITHER ABSOLUTE POWER AND/OR WEALTH FROM THE PRIVATE SECTOR AND/OR FROM GOVERNMENT, ENDS UP WITH “RUTHLESSLY GREEDY & EVIL PEOPLE RULING THE REST.”

THEY ARE TRULY EVIL GREED DRIVEN INSANE! AND THEY NEVER STOP! AFTER THREE YEARS AT THE UOFU, I HAD TAKEN MOSTLY GRADUATE COURSES FOR MY UNDERGRADUATE DEGREE, AS KAY WAS SO IMPRESSED BY MY WORK IN HIS POLITICAL ECONOMICS DOCTORAL SYMPOSIUM, HE “SIGNED” TO APPROVE ME TO SKIP OUT OF THE UNDERGRADUATE COURSES. I ASKED HIM, SO KAY, WHAT DO YOU THINK ABOUT A DOCTORATE IN ECONOMICS?
KAY STATED, TWO PROBLEMS JIM! WHAT ARE THEY, I ASKED. JOKING, KAY SAID, YOU HAVE TAKEN ALL OF THE PHD COURSES, SO WHAT WILL YOU TAKE? I SAID THAT I WOULD TAKE THE UNDERGRAD COURSES NOW! HE SAID, NO YOU WONT. WHAT’S THE OTHER PROBLEM? HE SAID . . “JIM, YOU SHOULD KNOW BY NOW. YOU ARE OUT TO SAVE THE WORLD FOR . . THE REST! . . THE EVIL RICH WILL DESTROY YOUR LIFE FOR DOING THIS! . . THE EVIL RICH ONLY PAY YOU TO . . DESTROY THE WORLD FOR THE EVIL RICHES OF THE FEW!” HE WAS SO CORRECT! THE EVIL RICH, THEIR OPERATORS AND ANTI-CHRISTIANS NEVER STOP DESTROYING MY LIFE, AND SCREWING ME! IT IS SIMPLY AMAZING HOW PURELY EVIL THEY TRULY ARE! I OFTEN WONDER, HOW THEY KNOW WHO I AM!
IN KAY’S OPINION, ONLY THE . . SUSTAINABLE HUMANE AND EGALITARIAN . . .

The Day and Hour Unknown
36 “But about that day or hour no one knows, not even the angels in heaven, nor the Son,[f] but only the Father.
37 As it was in the days of Noah, so it will be at the coming of the Son of Man.
38 For in the days before the flood, people were eating and drinking, marrying and giving in marriage, up to the day Noah entered the ark; 39 and they knew nothing about what would happen until the flood came and took them all away.
That is how it will be at the coming of the Son of Man. 40 Two men will be in the field; one will be taken and the other left. 41 Two women will be grinding with a hand mill; one will be taken and the other left.

Finland is a Capitalist Paradise
Can High Taxes Be Good for Business

Ms. Partanen is the author of “The Nordic Theory of Everything: In Search of a Better Life.” Mr. Corson is an author.
HELSINKI, Finland — Two years ago we were living in a pleasant neighborhood in Brooklyn. We were experienced professionals, enjoying a privileged life. We’d just had a baby. She was our first, and much wanted. We were United States citizens and our future as a family should have seemed bright. But we felt deeply insecure and anxious.
Our income was trickling in unreliably from temporary gigs as independent contractors. Our access to health insurance was a constant source of anxiety, as we scrambled year after year among private employer plans, exorbitant plans for freelancers, and complicated and expensive Obamacare plans. With a child, we’d soon face overwhelming day-care costs. Never mind the bankruptcy-sized bills for education ahead, whether for housing in a good public-school district or for private-school tuition. And then there’d be college. In other words, we suffered from the same stressors that are swamping more and more of Americans, even the relatively privileged.
As we contemplated all this, one of us, Anu, was offered a job back in her hometown: Helsinki, Finland.
Finland, of course, is one of those Nordic countries that we hear some Americans, including President Trump, describe as unsustainable and oppressive — “socialist nanny states.” As we considered settling there, we canvassed Trevor’s family — he was raised in Arlington, Va. — and our American friends. They didn’t seem to think we’d be moving to a Soviet-style autocracy. In fact, many of them encouraged us to go. Even a venture capitalist we knew in Silicon Valley who has three children sounded envious: “I’d move to Finland in a heartbeat.”
So we went.
We’ve now been living in Finland for more than a year. The difference between our lives here and in the States has been tremendous, but perhaps not in the way many Americans might imagine. What we’ve experienced is an increase in personal freedom. Our lives are just much more manageable. To be sure, our days are still full of challenges — raising a child, helping elderly parents, juggling the demands of daily logistics and work.
But in Finland, we are automatically covered, no matter what, by taxpayer-funded universal health care that equals the United States’ in quality (despite the misleading claims you hear to the contrary), all without piles of confusing paperwork or haggling over huge bills. Our child attends a fabulous, highly professional and ethnically diverse public day-care center that amazes us with its enrichment activities and professionalism. The price? About $300 a month — the maximum for public day care, because in Finland day-care fees are subsidized for all families.
And if we stay here, our daughter will be able to attend one of the world’s best K-12 education systems at no cost to us, regardless of the neighborhood we live in. College would also be tuition free. If we have another child, we will automatically get paid parental leave, funded largely through taxes, for nearly a year, which can be shared between parents. Annual paid vacations here of four, five or even six weeks are also the norm.
Compared with our life in the United States, this is fantastic. Nevertheless, to many people in America, the Finnish system may still conjure impressions of dysfunction and authoritarianism. Yet Finnish citizens report extraordinarily high levels of life satisfaction; the Organization for Economic Cooperation and Development ranked them highest in the world, followed by Norwegians, Danes, Swiss and Icelanders. This year, the World Happiness Report also announced Finland to be the happiest country on earth, for the second year in a row.
But surely, many in the United States will conclude, Finnish citizens and businesses must be paying a steep price in lost freedoms, opportunity and wealth. Yes, Finland faces its own economic challenges, and Finns are notorious complainers whenever anything goes wrong. But under its current system, Finland has become one of the world’s wealthiest societies, and like the other Nordic countries, it is home to many hugely successful global companies.
In fact, a recent report by the chairman of market and investment strategy for J.P. Morgan Asset Management came to a surprising conclusion: The Nordic region is not only “just as business-friendly as the U.S.” but also better on key free-market indexes, including greater protection of private property, less impact on competition from government controls and more openness to trade and capital flows. According to the World Bank, doing business in Denmark and Norway is actually easier overall than it is in the United States.
Finland also has high levels of economic mobility across generations. A 2018 World Bank report revealed that children in Finland have a much better chance of escaping the economic class of their parents and pursuing their own success than do children in the United States.
Finally, and perhaps most shockingly, the nonpartisan watchdog group Freedom House has determined that citizens of Finland actually enjoy higher levels of personal and political freedom, and more secure political rights, than citizens of the United States.
What to make of all this? For starters, politicians in the United States might want to think twice about calling the Nordics “socialist.” From our perch, the term seems to have more currency on the other side of the Atlantic than it does here.
In the United States, Senator Bernie Sanders and Representative Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez are often demonized as dangerous radicals. In Finland, many of their policy ideas would seem normal — and not particularly socialist.
When Mr. Sanders ran for president in 2016, what surprised our Finnish friends was that the United States, a country with so much wealth and successful capitalist enterprise, had not already set up some sort of universal public health care program and access to tuition-free college. Such programs tend to be seen by Nordic people as the bare basics required for any business-friendly nation to compete in the 21st century.
Even more peculiar is that in Finland, you don’t really see the kind of socialist movement that has been gaining popularity in some of the more radical fringes of the left in America, especially around goals such as curtailing free markets and even nationalizing the means of production. The irony is that if you championed socialism like this in Finland, you’d get few takers.
So what could explain this — the weird fact that actual socialism seems so much more popular in the capitalist United States than in supposedly socialist Finland?
A socialist revolution was attempted once in Finland. But that was more than a hundred years ago. Finland was in the process of industrializing when the Russian empire collapsed and Finland gained independence. Finnish urban and rural workers and tenant farmers, fed up with their miserable working conditions, rose up in rebellion. The response from Finland’s capitalists, conservative landowners and members of the middle and upper class was swift and violent. Civil war broke out and mass murder followed. After months of fighting, the capitalists and conservatives crushed the socialist uprising. More than 35,000 people lay dead. Traumatized and impoverished, Finns spent decades trying to recover and rebuild.
So what became of socialism in Finland after that? According to a prominent Finnish political historian, Pauli Kettunen of the University of Helsinki, after the civil war Finnish employers promoted the ideal of “an independent freeholder farmer and his individual will to work” and successfully used this idea of heroic individualism to weaken worker unions. Although socialists returned to playing a role in Finnish politics, during the first half of the 20th century, Finland prevented socialism from becoming a revolutionary force — and did so in a way that sounds downright American.
Finland fell into another bloody conflict as it fought off, at great cost, the Communist Soviet Union next door during World War II. After the war, worker unions gained strength, bringing back socialist sympathies as the country entered a more industrial and international era. This is when Finnish history took an unexpected turn.
Finnish employers had become painfully aware of the threats socialism continued to pose to capitalism. They also found themselves under increasing pressure from politicians representing the needs of workers. Wanting to avoid further conflicts, and to protect their private property and new industries, Finnish capitalists changed tactics. Instead of exploiting workers and trying to keep them down, after World War II, Finland’s capitalists cooperated with government to map out long-term strategies and discussed these plans with unions to get workers onboard.
More astonishingly, Finnish capitalists also realized that it would be in their own long-term interests to accept steep progressive tax hikes. The taxes would help pay for new government programs to keep workers healthy and productive — and this would build a more beneficial labor market. These programs became the universal taxpayer-funded services of Finland today, including public health care, public day care and education, paid parental leaves, unemployment insurance and the like.
If these moves by Finnish capitalists sound hard to imagine, it’s because people in the United States have been peddled a myth that universal government programs like these can’t coexist with profitable private-sector businesses and robust economic growth. As if to reinforce the impossibility of such synergies, last fall the Trump administration released a peculiar report arguing that “socialism” had negatively affected Nordic living standards.
However, a 2006 study by the Finnish researchers Markus Jantti, Juho Saari and Juhana Vartiainen demonstrates the opposite. First, throughout the 20th century Finland remained — and remains to this day — a country and an economy committed to markets, private businesses and capitalism.
Even more intriguing, these scholars demonstrate that Finland’s capitalist growth and dynamism have been helped, not hurt, by the nation’s commitment to providing generous and universal public services that support basic human well-being. These services have buffered and absorbed the risks and dislocations caused by capitalist innovation.
With Finland’s stable foundation for growth and disruption, its small but dynamic free-market economy has punched far above its weight. Some of the country’s most notable businesses have included the world’s largest mobile phone company, one of the world’s largest elevator manufacturers and two of the world’s most successful mobile gaming companies. Visit Finland today and it’s obvious that the much-heralded quality of life is taking place within a bustling economy of upscale shopping malls, fancy cars and internationally competitive private companies.
The other Nordic countries have been practicing this form of capitalism even longer than Finland, with even more success. As early as the 1930s, according to Pauli Kettunen, employers across the Nordic region watched the disaster of the Great Depression unfold. For enough of them the lesson was clear: The smart choice was to compromise and pursue the Nordic approach to capitalism.
The Nordic countries are all different from one another, and all have their faults, foibles, unique histories and civic disagreements. Contentious battles between strong unions and employers help keep the system in balance. Often it gets messy: Just this week, the Finnish prime minister resigned amid a labor dispute.
But the Nordic nations as a whole, including a majority of their business elites, have arrived at a simple formula: Capitalism works better if employees get paid decent wages and are supported by high-quality, democratically accountable public services that enable everyone to live healthy, dignified lives and to enjoy real equality of opportunity for themselves and their children. For us, that has meant an increase in our personal freedoms and our political rights — not the other way around.
Yes, this requires capitalists and corporations to pay fairer wages and more taxes than their American counterparts currently do. Nordic citizens generally pay more taxes, too. And yes, this might sound scandalous in the United States, where business leaders and economists perpetually warn that tax increases would slow growth and reduce incentives to invest.
Here’s the funny thing, though: Over the past 50 years, if you had invested in a basket of Nordic equities, you would have earned a higher annual real return than the American stock market during the same half-century, according to global equities data published by Credit Suisse.
Nordic capitalists are not dumb. They know that they will still earn very handsome financial returns even after paying their taxes. They keep enough of their profits to live in luxury, wield influence and acquire social status. There are several dozen Nordic billionaires. Nordic citizens are not dumb, either. If you’re a member of the robust middle class in Finland, you generally get a better overall deal for your combined taxes and personal expenditures, as well as higher-quality outcomes, than your American counterparts — and with far less hassle.
Why would the wealthy in Nordic countries go along with this? Some Nordic capitalists actually believe in equality of opportunity and recognize the value of a society that invests in all of its people. But there is a more prosaic reason, too: Paying taxes is a convenient way for capitalists to outsource to the government the work of keeping workers healthy and educated.
While companies in the United States struggle to administer health plans and to find workers who are sufficiently educated, Nordic societies have demanded that their governments provide high-quality public services for all citizens. This liberates businesses to focus on what they do best: business. It’s convenient for everyone else, too. All Finnish residents, including manual laborers, legal immigrants, well-paid managers and wealthy families, benefit hugely from the same Finnish single-payer health care system and world-class public schools.
There’s a big lesson here: When capitalists perceive government as a logistical ally rather than an ideological foe and when all citizens have a stake in high-quality public institutions, it’s amazing how well government can get things done.
Ultimately, when we mislabel what goes on in Nordic nations as socialism, we blind ourselves to what the Nordic region really is: a laboratory where capitalists invest in long-term stability and human flourishing while maintaining healthy profits.
Capitalists in the United States have taken a different path. They’ve slashed taxes, weakened government, crushed unions and privatized essential services in the pursuit of excess profits. All of this leaves workers painfully vulnerable to capitalism’s dynamic disruptions. Even well-positioned Americans now struggle under debilitating pressures, and a majority inhabit a treacherous Wild West where poverty, homelessness, medical bankruptcy, addiction and incarceration can be just a bit of bad luck away. Americans are told that this is freedom and that it is the most heroic way to live. It’s the same message Finns were fed a century ago.
But is this approach the most effective or even the most profitable way for capitalists in the United States to do business? It should come as no surprise that resentment and fear have become rampant in the United States, and that President Trump got elected on a promise to turn the clock backward on globalization. Nor is it surprising that American workers are fighting back; the number of workers involved in strikes last year in the United States was the highest since the 1980s, and this year’s General Motors strike was the company’s longest in nearly 50 years. Nor should it surprise anyone that fully half of the rising generation of Americans, aged 18 to 29, according to Gallup polling, have a positive view of socialism.
The prospect of a future full of socialists seems finally to be getting the attention of some American business leaders. For years the venture capitalist Nick Hanauer has been warning his “fellow zillionaires” that “the pitchforks are coming for us.” Warren Buffett has been calling for higher taxes on the rich, and this year the hedge-fund billionaire Ray Dalio admitted that “capitalism basically is not working for the majority of people.” Peter Georgescu, chairman emeritus of Young & Rubicam, has put it perhaps most succinctly: He sees capitalism “slowly committing suicide.”In recent months such concerns have spread throughout the capitalist establishment. The Financial Times rocked its business-friendly readership with a high-profile series admitting that capitalism has indeed become “rigged” and that it desperately needs a “reset,” to restore truly free markets and bring back real opportunity. Leading captains of finance and industry in the United States rocked the business world, too, with a joint declaration from the Business Roundtable that they will now prioritize not only profits but also “employees, customers, shareholders and the communities.” They are calling this “stakeholder capitalism.”
If these titans of industry are serious about finding a more sustainable approach, there’s no need to reinvent the wheel. They can simply consult their Nordic counterparts. If they do, they might realize that the success of Nordic capitalism is not due to businesses doing more to help communities. In a way, it’s the opposite: Nordic capitalists do less. What Nordic businesses do is focus on business — including good-faith negotiations with their unions — while letting citizens vote for politicians who use government to deliver a set of robust universal public services.
This, in fact, may be closer to what a majority of people in the United States actually want, at least according to a poll released by the Pew Research Center this year. Respondents said that the American government should spend more on health care and education, for example, to improve the quality of life for future generations.
But the poll also revealed that Americans feel deeply pessimistic about the nation’s future and fear that worse political conflict is coming. Some military analysts and historians agree and put the odds of a civil war breaking out in the United States frighteningly high.
Right now might be an opportune moment for American capitalists to pause and ask themselves what kind of long-term cost-benefit calculation makes the most sense. Business leaders focused on the long game could do a lot worse than starting with a fact-finding trip to Finland.
Here in Helsinki, our family is facing our second Nordic winter and the notorious darkness it brings. Our Finnish friends keep asking how we handled the first one and whether we can survive another. Our answer is always the same. As we push our 2-year-old daughter in her stroller through the dismal, icy streets to her wonderful, affordable day-care center or to our friendly, professional and completely free pediatric health center, before heading to work in an innovative economy where a vast majority of people have a decent quality of life, the winter doesn’t matter one bit. It can actually make you happy.

The Fake Freedom of American Health Care
By Anu Partanen
March 18, 2017
Last week the nonpartisan Congressional Budget Office estimatedthat the new Republican health plan would increase the number of uninsured Americans by 24 million people within a decade, mostly because changes in regulations, subsidies and Medicaid coverage would make insurance too expensive for them.
Republican leaders seem unfazed by this, perhaps because, in their minds, deciding not to have health care because it’s too expensive is an exercise of individual free will. As Representative Jason Chaffetz, Republican of Utah, put it: “Americans have choices. And they’ve got to make a choice. And so maybe, rather than getting that new iPhone that they just love, and they want to go spend hundreds of dollars on that, maybe they should invest in their own health care.”
There is an appealing logic to such thinking. The idea is that buying health care is like buying anything else. The United States is home to some of the world’s best medical schools, doctors, research institutes and hospitals, and if you have the money for the coverage and procedures you want, you absolutely can get top-notch care. This approach might result in extreme inequalities and it might be expensive, but it definitely buys you the best medical treatment anywhere. Such is the cost of freedom. As House Speaker Paul Ryan put it in a tweet: “Freedom is the ability to buy what you want to fit what you need.” Vice President Mike Pence picked up that baton: “Obamacare will be replaced with something that actually works — bringing freedom and individual responsibility back to American health care.”
In practice, though, this Republican notion is an awfully peculiar kind of freedom. It requires most Americans to spend not just money, but also time and energy agonizing over the bewildering logistics of coverage and treatment — confusing plans, exorbitant premiums and deductibles, exclusive networks, mysterious tests, outrageous drug prices. And more often than not, individual choices are severely restricted by decisions made by employers, insurers, doctors, pharmaceutical companies and other private players. Those interest groups, not the consumer, decide which plans are available, what those plans cover, which doctors patients can see and how much it will cost.
And I haven’t even mentioned the millions of Americans who don’t earn enough to pay for insurance or a lifesaving treatment. If you can’t afford it, not buying it is hardly a choice.
Eight years ago I moved to the United States from Finland, which like all the Nordic nations is a wealthy capitalist economy, despite the stereotypes you may have heard. And like all those countries, Finland has invested in a universal, taxpayer-funded and publicly managed health care system. Finns constantly debate the shortcomings of their system and are working to improve it, but in Finland I never worried about where my medical care came from or whether I could afford it. I paid my income taxes — which, again despite the stereotypes, were about the same as what I pay in federal, state and local income taxes in New York City — and if I needed to see a doctor, I had several options.
For minor medical matters, I could visit a private physician who was provided as a perk by my employer. Or I could call the public clinic closest to my home. If I saw the private doctor, my employer picked up the tab, with the help of public subsidies. If I went to the public clinic, it might cost me a small co-payment, usually around $20. Had I been pregnant, most care would have been free.
If I had wanted to, I also could have easily paid to see a private doctor on my own, again with the help of public subsidies. All of this works without anyone ever having to sign up for or buy health insurance unless he wants additional coverage. I never had to worry whether I was covered. All Finns are covered for all essential medical care automatically, regardless of employment or income.
Republicans are fond of criticizing this sort of European-style health care. President Trump has called Canada’s national health care system “catastrophic.” On CNN recently, Senator Ted Cruz gave multiple examples of how patients in countries with universal, government-managed health care get less care than Americans.
In Europe, he said, elderly people facing life-threatening diseases are often placed in palliative care and essentially told it’s their time to go. According to the Republican orthodoxy, government always takes away not only people’s freedom to choose their doctor, but also their doctor’s ability to choose the correct care for patients. People are at the mercy of bureaucrats. Waiting times are long. Quality of care is dismal.
But are Republicans right about this? Practically every wealthy capitalist democracy in the world has decided that some form of government-managed universal health care is the most sensible and effective option. According to the latest report of the O.E.C.D. — an organization of mostly wealthy nations — the United States as a whole does not actually outshine other countries in the quality of care.
In fact, the United States has shorter life expectancy, higher infant mortality and fewer doctors per capita than most other developed countries. When it comes to outcomes in some illnesses, including cancer, the United States does have some of the best survival rates in the world — but that’s barely ahead of, or even slightly behind, the equivalent survival rates in other developed countries. In breast cancer survival, for example, the United States comes in second, after Sweden. Third-best is Norway, then Finland. All three countries have universal, government-run health care systems.
For colorectal cancer, the five-year survival rate after diagnosis in the United States brings it to a not very impressive ninth place in the O.E.C.D. statistics. Ahead of the United States are South Korea, Israel, Australia, Sweden and Finland, all with some form of government-managed universal health care. And when it comes to cervical cancer, American women are at a significant disadvantage: The United States comes in only 22nd. Meanwhile, life expectancy at age 65 is higher in 24 other developed nations, including Canada, Britain and most European nations.
Americans might still assume that long waits for care are inevitable in a health care system run by the government. But that’s not necessarily the case either. A report in 2014 by the Commonwealth Fund, a private foundation specializing in health care research, ranked the United States third in the world in access to specialists. That’s a great achievement. But the Netherlands and Switzerland did better. When it comes to nonemergency and elective surgery, patients in several countries, including the Netherlands, Germany and Switzerland, all of which have universal, government-guided health care systems, have faster access than the United States.
It’s not just American patients who endure endless bureaucratic hassles. American doctors were also significantly more likely to report as major problems the amount of time they spent on dealing with administrative burdens related to insurance and claims, as well as on getting patients medications or treatment because of restrictions imposed by insurance companies, compared with doctors in most of the other 10 countries studied — including Sweden and Britain.
Overall, Americans spend far more of their hard-earned money on health care than citizens of any other country, by a very wide margin. This means that it is in fact Americans who are getting a raw deal. Americans pay much more than people in other countries but do not get significantly better results.
The trouble with a free-market approach is that health care is an immensely complicated and expensive industry, in which the individual rarely has much actual market power. It is not like buying a consumer product, where choosing not to buy will not endanger one’s life. It’s also not like buying some other service tailored to individual demands, because for the most part we can’t predict our future health care needs.
The point of universal coverage is to pool risk, for the maximum benefit of the individual when he or she needs care. And the point of having the government manage this complicated service is not to take freedom away from the individual. The point is the opposite: to give people more freedom. Arranging health care is an overwhelming task, and having a specialized entity do the negotiating, regulating and perhaps even much of the providing is just vastly more efficient than forcing everyone to go it alone.
What passes for an American health care system today certainly has not made me feel freer. Having to arrange so many aspects of care myself, while also having to navigate the ever-changing maze of plans, prices and the scarcity of appointments available with good doctors in my network, has thrown me, along with huge numbers of Americans, into a state of constant stress. And I haven’t even been seriously sick or injured yet.
As a United States citizen now, I wish Americans could experience the freedom of knowing that the health care system will always be there for us regardless of our employment status. I wish we were free to assume that our doctors get paid a salary to look after our best interests, not to profit by generating billable tests and procedures. I want the freedom to know that the system will automatically take me and my family in, without my having to battle for care in my moment of weakness and need. That is real freedom.
So is the freedom of knowing that none of it will bankrupt us. That is the freedom I had back in Finland.
Here is my appeal to Republicans: If you really want to free Americans and unburden American employers, why not try, or at least seriously consider, some form of government-managed health care, like almost every other capitalist democracy? There are many ways of giving people choice and excellent care under government management. Universal publicly managed health coverage would even free America’s corporations and businesses to streamline their operations, releasing them from bureaucratic obligations that to me, coming from Finland, I have to say look weirdly socialist. Would this mean they would have to pay more in taxes? Possibly.
Many countries require employers and employees to contribute to the health care system through payroll taxes, more than the United States does. But again, Americans are paying far more for health care than anyone else, and America’s businesses are stuck managing this mess. It’s true that in countries with universal health care the cost of hiring a new employee can be significant, especially for a small employer. Yet these countries still have plenty of thriving businesses, with lower administrative burdens. It can be done.
In wealthy capitalist democracies all around the world the government itself also has an essential kind of freedom. It’s a freedom that enables the government to do work on behalf of the citizens who elect it, including negotiating the prices of health care with providers and pharmaceutical companies — a policy that has led to lower drug prices in those countries.
Americans today are paying vastly more in money, worry and hassle for the same, and sometimes worse, care than people in other wealthy capitalist democracies. Some Americans have coverage that serves them well, but judging by the current mood, the number of Americans who think the system needs to change is growing. No health care system is perfect. But in a nation that purports to champion freedom, the outdated disaster that is the United States health care system is taking that freedom away.

Making America More Like Scandinavia
What the United States can learn from protest and political organizing in the Nordic countries.
JULY 12, 2016
Liberals in the United States wistfully regard Scandinavia as a kind of social utopia, while conservatives denounce it as a socialist state where government overreach is ubiquitous. Yet across the political spectrum, Americans believe it would be impossible to adopt the Nordic model.
That’s the starting point for Viking Economics: How the Scandinavians Got it Right--and How We Can, Too, a new book from George Lakey, a former Eugene M. Lang visiting professor for issues of social change at Swarthmore College. Lakey, however, rejects that premise, arguing instead that Americans can adapt the Nordic model to fit the United States, reducing the wealth gap and improving the quality of life for all Americans as a result.
There are limitations to attempts to compare the United States with Norway, Denmark, Sweden, and Iceland—the four countries with Viking ancestry that the book focuses on. The United States is far larger than each of those countries, to say nothing of cultural, demographic and political differences. Life in Nordic countries is not always idyllic, either. While Nordic nations consistently rank among countries with the highest quality of life, they are not immune to anti-immigrant and authoritarian political impulses.
Lakey acknowledges the challenge of comparison and notes that the Nordic way is not a panacea. Nevertheless, he believes that Americans have much to learn from Norway, Denmark, Sweden, and Iceland. In particular, he argues that Americans can draw lessons from the success that Nordic citizens have had in bringing about economic and social change by making demands on their government through political protest. A transcript of our conversation, edited for clarity and length, appears below.
Foran: What myths do you think Americans hold about the Nordic countries?
Lakey: A lot of people mistakenly believe that the countries with Viking ancestry—Norway, Denmark, Sweden, and Iceland—have always had the high standard of living that they do today. That’s not the case, and people don’t realize what it took to create the kind of society we see today in each of these countries.
A century ago, the economic elite ran each of those countries. There was the pretense of democracy, but it was always the decisions of economic elites that carried the day. There was poverty and a lack of empowerment of the people. The change that came about in the Nordic countries so that they eventually moved to an economic model where there was less of a wealth gap, and better quality of life, came about after everyday people made demands on their governments to change.
The 1 percent may occupy state power, but when the majority of the country stands up in opposition to the 1 percent, they can make the country ungovernable. That’s what happened in Nordic countries, and that’s what opened up the political space in which they could build an economic model that far outperforms the economic model of the United States.
Foran: Do you think it’s detrimental from an American perspective to be unaware of that history?
Lakey: Yes, absolutely. If we think that the Nordic model has always existed in the way we think of it today, then it starts to seem like something that’s totally unique to those countries that can’t be replicated in any way. That belief can become immobilizing.
Foran: You make a distinction between the power of voting and the power of protest and mass mobilization of people. Can you talk about the distinction?
Lakey: In the Nordic countries, people first created popular movements that used direct-action tactics like strikes, boycotts, and demonstrations. They also built movement infrastructure, like co-ops and study circles. As these movements gained momentum, they led to the creation of political parties that were controlled by the movements and represented the movements in parliament. In that way, politicians were accountable to the people.
That’s entirely different from what we have in the U.S. with the Democratic Party, for example, where the party is not really accountable to anyone except the economic elite. Today, the U.S. also has low voter participation compared with the Nordics. The path they took—building powerful grassroots movements that then control the politicians who represent them, might help us achieve the degree of democracy that they enjoy.
Foran: Do you think there are culturally rooted ideals about individualism as opposed to collectivism that are different in the U.S. and Nordic countries that make it difficult for Americans to organize political movements?
Lakey: Well, each culture brings assets and liabilities to the challenge of creating a real democracy, and that means that movement building in the U.S. will look different sometimes from what it looks like in Nordic countries.
One advantage that people have in the Nordic countries—in terms of organizing around demands—is they speak the language of interests without apology. They understand that individuals and groups have interests and there are circumstances where it makes sense for people to work together toward a common goal, because it’s in their collective interest to do so.
On the other hand, the ability of Nordic individuals to join together to pursue their interests doesn’t diminish their individuality. The transparency of the process promotes the common good, since they understand that without the enhancement of the common good, individuals lose.
Foran: What about other limitations in comparing the United States and Nordic countries. For example, the U.S. has a history of racial disparity and discrimination. How does that make comparisons difficult?
Lakey: Racism is of course a reality in the Nordic countries—but it’s not the same as the U.S. legacy of having had a substantial part of your country holding slaves and having enslavement as an institution, legal and real. That continues to be an enormous burden for the United States and makes it difficult to forge the kind of national coalitions and broad movements that are necessary to set things right.
On the other hand, our vision for what we can achieve decades down the road can benefit from the inheritance of racial diversity we have in our country. There are any number of Nordic people who envy the kind of richness of cultural and racial diversity that we have here in the United States.
Currently, we are in a period where we are seeing a new civil-rights movement in the United States. Black Lives Matter is one expression of that. The movement we see now is far more likely to approach economic justice and racial justice as intertwined, so that bodes well and is one example of movement building in the U.S.
Foran: I also want to talk about immigration. In the U.S. presidential election, immigration has been an extremely contentious issue, particularly on the Republican side. There has been anti-immigrant backlash in Nordic countries as well. What do you think we can take away from that?
Lakey: There has certainly been a Nordic struggle with xenophobia. The reality is that wherever there is a white settlement in the world, there’s racism, and wherever nationalism exists, there will be some xenophobia. In recent decades, the four countries have opened to more immigration—Sweden has accepted the highest number per capita of refugees from the Middle East of any country in Europe.
This naturally generates backlash, including Islamophobia. The advantage the Nordics have over the U.S., however, is that their economic model reduces the insecurity that fuels pushback and assures the newcomers maximum possible opportunity to integrate into the country and add to the talents and skills that strengthen already robust economies. Equality isn’t just an ideal. It is a pragmatic economic advantage.
Foran: Are there examples of mistakes that Nordic countries have made that could be as instructive for the U.S. as their successes?
Lakey: Well, Iceland’s 2008 economic collapse is an instructive example. Iceland became a basket case after the financial crisis that arrived in the wake of deregulation. Some people regarded it as a failed state. After the collapse, people took to the streets in protest, and backed by a people’s movement, Icelanders brought down the previous government that had been careless and installed a new government. In the wake of the crisis, Iceland seized major banks rather than bailing them out, and the government ultimately put the country on a path to economic recovery that was far quicker than what we have seen in the U.S.
Foran: There has been a lot of talk about political movements and protest in the context of the Bernie Sanders presidential campaign. What do you think is the most effective way to channel the energy inspired by that campaign so it doesn’t dissipate? What do you think would squander that enthusiasm?
Lakey: The best thing for Sanders supporters to do would be to focus their energy on direct-action campaigns aimed at achieving specific policy goals. So, for example, if Sanders supporters took the goal of free higher education and turned that into a direct-action national campaign that protesters were willing to go to jail for, that would be a more effective way of achieving that goal than even getting Sanders elected to the presidency. Sanders in the Oval Office wouldn’t be able to get anything done with the current Congress, whereas with a direct-action pressure campaign, there is a better chance of actually getting something like free higher education or Medicare for all accomplished.
The biggest mistake that supporters of Bernie Sanders could make would be if they were to say, “Well let’s go back to the Democratic Party and contest for power within the party.” That’s a losing proposition. The party cannot be changed from within, it needs to be held accountable from the outside.
Foran: What about the idea that to achieve change, you need to exert pressure from inside the political structure as well as from the outside. Don’t you think that both are needed?
Lakey: When the Democratic Party sees that an externally driven campaign is growing and growing, eventually people within the party will change their policy to accommodate that. That’s what happened with the civil-rights movement. The federal government couldn’t have cared less about the civil-rights movement until the movement grew in power and influence to the point where, to maintain their own credibility, the Democratic Party had to modify its position on civil rights.
We don’t need to attempt to organize Democrats to play the inside game or attempt to become part of that inside game. Elected officials will do that on their own so as not to alienate their base, so long as there is enough pressure from the outside. The question is where the control and the initiative come from. If the control is outside the Democratic Party with an independent initiative, then it will be in the interest of the Democrats to change their position to accommodate that as long as the pressure is strong enough.
Foran: What about Sanders himself? How do you think he can be effective in achieving the goals he has outlined during his campaign?
Lakey: The best way for him to increase his influence would be to choose an issue that he has advocated for in his campaign, and work to advocate for that, and support the grassroots organizing that springs up to work toward the same goal. He won’t be able to achieve his goals—for example, something like Medicare for all—as a senator by staying within the usual legislative means. I also don’t think he should try to be the leader of any grassroots movement, but he can still play an important role. As a senator, he has a highly visible platform that he can use to broadcast and amplify grassroots agitation in support of policy change.

by Anu Partanen
"I think we're headed for better times," our friend says. "We've reached the bottom now, and it's going to get better from here."
We stare at him.
"Really?" someone asks. The rest of us ask the same with our surprised silence, each in our own little square.
"Explain, please," says someone else.
This is what it's come to: a positive assessment of the future—if one can call positive an assessment that we are experiencing our darkest moment right now—sounds absurd to us, as if our friend had finally relinquished his grip on reality. Which, of course, wouldn't be all that odd these days.
The situation itself is also unusual because we are talking about the future of the United States. We're only talking about it because I asked my friends what they think about it.
We get together somewhat regularly on Saturdays. There are usually seven of us. For Californians the meeting is breakfast (Bloody Marys), for New Yorkers lunch (wine), and for us in Helsinki dinner (it's already time for something stronger, isn't it?).
We compare our meals. We talk about work, co-op meetings, TV shows, bike rides, pets, and families. We laugh.
Sometimes we discuss practical questions: Is it safer to travel between Manhattan and Brooklyn by subway or Uber when considering the risk for Covid? Is there an argument that could make a Trump-voting grandmother change her mind? Can a massage be had outdoors? (Of course, if you happen to live in California.)
Since many in our group of friends are teachers, we discuss the challenges of remote teaching. We discuss smoke days in California schools, when teachers and students are banned from campus because the air quality is too poor for outdoor activities—this is because of the forest fires, but many school activities can't take place indoors because of the pandemic.
Most of the time we don't discuss politics, even though we are all American citizens and entitled to vote. This does not surprise me. I myself feel too tired to discuss it all, even though my mail-in vote has left Helsinki for the U.S. weeks ago.
What is there to discuss when there's a car crash, and you're sitting inside the wreckage yourself?
What is there to tell in a story whose twists and turns have already been watched with disbelief, whose logic has long ago disappeared, and of which all that is left is a tangle with no beginning and no end?
I moved to the U.S. in late 2008. One of my first memories of life in the U.S. is watching Barack Obama's inauguration ceremony on an old TV set in Brooklyn.
The TV commentators kept repeating the phrase "peaceful transition of power." As in: "We have gathered here today to once again observe the peaceful transition of power." The emphasis sounded strange to me—what exactly did the narrators expect might happen on that stage? A fist fight between the outgoing and the incoming president?
During my first year in the U.S., I divided my time between California and New York. In San Francisco, my Indian-American roommate had attached a campaign poster featuring Obama's stylized face on the refrigerator. In Brooklyn, Obama's "Yes We Can" campaign signs were attached to the windows of homes.
I imagined myself in Helsinki attaching a picture of Finland's prime minister Matti Vanhanen or President Tarja Halonen on my fridge. The thought made me laugh. I could not remember a single Finnish political slogan.
As time passed, my confusion continued as I listened to the way Americans kept repeating the word freedom. We should be grateful that we live in a country where we have freedoms that others do not have, a rodeo host reminded us. Sometimes freedom is taken away by tanks; sometimes it is taken away when you and your family lose the freedom to choose your doctor, an opponent of Obama's health care reform said. In the U.S. the word "freedom" can be attached to just about any debate. To my Finnish ear, the use of the word of sounded pompous and self-aggrandizing.
Gradually, however, I began to grasp the story that Americans so tirelessly told themselves and others about their country.
Gradually, I also began to believe it.
The U.S. has historically been a safe haven for people freeing oppression. Thanksgiving still celebrates the Puritans who arrived on the new continent from Britain in the 17th century to escape religious persecution. When the U.S. declared independence in 1776, it also declared every human being to be born free and equal. The new country became a republic.
In reality, of course, the people living in the newly created U.S. were not equal by any measure. Slavery was legal and widespread in the country, and women were not allowed to vote.
Even so, in the world of that time, American thinking on equality was so radical that in the first half of the 19th century, the French diplomat Alexis de Tocqueville wrote his still-famous book Democracy in America about his experiences in the U.S. De Tocqueville admired the U.S.'s success with local government and representative democracy. Europe was still ruled by royals and nobles and had nothing like it.
In the late 19th century, millions of Europeans began flowing to Ellis Island in New York City. The Statue of Liberty rose next to the immigrant inspection station, and on its pedestal, Emma Lazarus' poem was carved: "Give me your tired, your poor, your huddled masses yearning to breathe free…"
Later, the United States fought against the Nazis in Europe and continued to receive new waves of freedom seekers: German and Soviet Jews, Cuban conservatives, the poor and the crushed of South America and the Caribbean. The newcomers' stories varied, but almost everyone had experienced oppression of one kind or another: by dictators, by the masses, or by criminal groups.
I began to appreciate the almost obsessive attitude Americans had toward freedom. In their self-image, Americans are the pioneers of freedom and equality, because that is what they really have been in their own way for centuries.
Equality was also linked to the American perception of being American. According to the American self-image, the U.S. was different from Europe in another way: being American was not linked to shared genes or history. Being American was tied to the ideal of freedom. Anyone can be a true, patriotic American, as long as they are a U.S. citizen and believe in individual freedom and responsibility as well as in hard work and entrepreneurialism. Skin color, religion, and family history should not define who is American.
This mix of languages, cultures and religions has created the world's best universities, the biggest number of Nobel Prize-winning scientists, the most successful companies, the most revolutionary inventions, the most prosperous middle class, the most entertaining popular culture, and the world's only people to walk on the moon. It has created the most powerful and richest state in the world. Much of the rest of the world admires and follows.
The election of Barack Obama, the first African-American president of the United States, only seemed to reinforce this American story. Equality progresses slowly but surely. Obama's picture on the fridges was a tribute not only to his personality but also to the journey the U.S. had made.
Until: the sound a deafening scratch across the vinyl record interrupts the music.
Donald Trump's election as president came as a surprise mostly to liberal white Democratic voters who believed in the American story. Black Americans were perhaps less surprised—of course the rise of a black president would cause a backlash. Trump just made visible what had always simmered beneath the surface.
Trump does not care about the self-image of the U.S.—as a nation based on immigration, or united by the ideals of equality and freedom. No, not even though his mother and wife are immigrants. He proudly represents the view that a real American is white, Christian, and conservative. Others are not and cannot be truly American.
He has called Mexicans criminals and rapists, demanded a travel ban for Muslims and sided with white supremacist movements. In doing so, he follows a long tradition.
During the time when de Tocqueville admired American self-government, keeping Africans as slaves was still legal in the U.S. Official racial segregation did not end until the late 1960s, and unofficial segregation still continues. In my former hometown of New York City, children still end up divided into different schools according to ethnic backgrounds.
The Obama presidency was a disappointment to many who voted for him. New political initiatives did not proceed as hoped, and the scourge of racism did not diminish but, on the contrary, seemed to grow. Michael Brown; Ferguson, Missouri. Sandra Bland; Waller County, Texas. Tamir Rice; Cleveland, Ohio. Eric Garner; Staten Island, New York. Breonna Taylor; Louisville, Kentucky. George Floyd; Minneapolis, Minnesota ...
Names and videos came in a stream year after year. Black men, women and children dying at the hands of white police officers without anyone being punished.
The events were followed by local demonstrations, a wave of news, and an avalanche of social media. But it wasn't until the Trump era that Black Lives Matter, a movement denouncing the discrimination and the police violence that black Americans face daily, spread across the country and became known around the world. The American story of equality, freedom, and progress crumbled. The reality looked different.
What does American life look like? What about American health care? School? School lunch? Working conditions? Pay? Summer vacation? Parental leave? Sick leave? Taxation?
There are as many answers as there are Americans.
With their faith in individual freedom and responsibility, Americans forgot that equality of opportunity does not happen by itself and that a common reality arises only from a common framework. If everyone has to negotiate, fight, and pay for themselves and their families the kind of health insurance, childcare, education, family leave, employment, and taxation that their skills, money, and connections can achieve, no one has any idea what kinds of difficulties or opportunities others are facing.
It took a while before I began to understand that every American really is building their very own puzzle in life, and that they mostly don't have any idea what kinds of pieces other people's puzzles are made of.
The political decisions made in the U.S. over the past forty years are essentially a cautionary tale. The decisions have favored the wealthy and, under the guise of freedom, built a society in which an individual's family background and wealth determine their success much more than their entrepreneurialism or talent, and a society in which people live completely different lives. Inequality and mistrust reign.
Now, Americans have begun to talk more and more about two different political realities: the one that journalists write about and social media talks about, and the one that ordinary voters experience. These two worlds seem less and less likely to meet.
Reporters uncover one political scandal after another, and social media and cable TV commentators deliver opinions every day, but ordinary voters aren't persuaded, or even reached.
More and more Americans believe in lies and conspiracy theories because—why not? The history of the U.S. can also be seen as one big fairy tale and as a true conspiracy. The actions of American intelligence services and presidents have often constituted proven conspiracies, and perhaps the biggest lie of all has been the claim of equality of opportunity. It's not hard to plant more lies and arguments in such soil if you want to, and there are many in the world today who do.
Ordinary voters cite low hourly wages and deteriorating morale as their biggest concerns. But the political elites are talking about Russia or Ukraine. So, perhaps it's no wonder that, according to a study by Stony Brook University in the U.S., more than 80 percent of Americans follow politics only occasionally or not at all.
I moved back to Finland in 2018, a year and a half after Donald Trump's inauguration. Over the past two years, I have visited the U.S. only a few times on business trips. I meet my American friends and my partner's family on video calls, and I follow the lives of my American acquaintances on Instagram. The U.S. in the news and on public social media looks very different from the U.S. I see in my meetings or on private social media.
The news stream grinds Trump, Covid, Supreme Court judges, election campaigns, and the stock market. My acquaintances share pictures of nature, children learning to ride bikes, and ice cream servings at local restaurants.
Their pictures remind me of everything that I love in the U.S. Funny, smart, and caring people, rugged, breathtaking nature, neighborhood communities, and an energetic, enterprising, and highly social culture.
That U.S., too, is real and still there, even though the nature photos show traces of forest fires, and even though my friends sometimes seem to be collapsing in the midst of a year of homeschooling, remote work, and political catastrophe.
My Finnish acquaintances are obsessed with U.S. politics and the presidential election, some waking up at four in the morning to watch the debates. Among my American friends, no one wants to talk about politics. Some work as volunteers for one campaign or another in their own state. Many take part in demonstrations. Many report on social media that they voted or participated in get-out-the-vote campaigns by sending cards to people across the country. As far as I know, they all vote.
But everyone is also exhausted.
During the Democratic primaries, many of my friends and acquaintances took a strong stand for their own candidate. Now that choice is behind us, and two candidates have been fighting for power. Because of the American electoral system, though, most of the country has virtually no influence on the election of the president. The choice is made in the swing states. My friends, even the ones from those places, do not live there anymore.
On the other hand, all Americans have lived in a nation where the rise of chaos like the chaos we see now has long been possible. So, whose fault is this mess? Mine, yours, ours, theirs? Where is the beginning and where the end? Have previous votes for previous candidates actually altered anything? What about protests, scandals, and riots? Hillary Clinton got three million more votes than Donald Trump—yet Donald Trump won. Will anything ever change, and if so, who can bring about that change?
Obama supporters tried to revolutionize the system, but was anything transformed? Trump supporters tried the same from their own point of view—did they get a better reality?
In the end, only a tired silence follows the ongoing scandals of the political machinery, the street protests, and the noise of social media.
Fatigue, because managing day-to-day life is hard enough. Despair, because no action seems to have an impact. Silence, because you can't fight all the time, and rage takes its toll, too. But the silence can also speak of privilege—if the problems of the U.S. do not directly threaten you or your loved-one's livelihood or life, it's easier to leave the battle to others.
Sometimes I think that Finns follow American politics like passersby staring at a car wreck on the road. The destruction is exciting because it's shocking, without directly impacting you.
Americans, on the other hand, are in the accident. They pull frantically on the jammed car doors, or sit on the sidewalk in a state of shock. Some deny the events of the accident altogether. Others try to focus on their own affairs because the accident has already happened, and the damage is too difficult to fix.
When asked, they offer some opinion about traffic rules. But mostly they would rather talk about something else.
Everyone is more or less traumatized.
I am often asked if I would still like to move back to the U.S. My answer has always been automatic: of course.
My partner is American. My daughter is half American. I am a dual citizen. I have taken it for granted that at some point our family will live in the U.S. again. After all, we want our daughter to know and experience the best of her other homeland.
She watches videos sent by her American uncle of the tractors cleaning the deserted beaches of California—the kid is obsessed with trucks and construction equipment—and she reads children's books about the lives of American children sent by her American grandparents. She lifts up her drawings for our American friends to admire via webcam.
For her, the U.S. is a place where people we love live and where we will go by plane one day. When everything is better.
One night when my husband and I are going to bed a whole new thought suddenly pops into my mind. What if everything is never better again?
My assumption that we will live in the U.S. again someday is based on the assumption that at some point the country will return to "normal." One day it will again be a country where my daughter can join a debate club at school, become friends with children who look very different from her, apply for and get jobs despite her strange Finnish name, and absorb a culture that believes in personal initiative, helping neighbors, and everyone's ability to change the world.
Fundamentally, I believe the United States is that same country even today.
But what if it isn't?
What if it is a country on a long-run trajectory towards fascism, terrorist attacks, climate catastrophe, and permanent chaos?
At times, I think I dramatize the situation in the U.S. too much. Sometimes, I think I don't dramatize it enough.
I hold on to a thought I encountered in a collection of essays by the British author Zadie Smith. Smith lives and teaches in the U.S. In these essays she reflects on the events of the pandemic spring. Our longing to return to the past is understandable but absurd, she says. After World War II, no one wanted to go back to the time before that. Disaster demanded a new dawn, Smith writes.
For the U.S., it is hard to believe in a new dawn. The slide into divergent realities has been so long, and views on future goals are so diverse. Four more years of Donald Trump would only bring more destruction, but four years of Joe Biden will hardly be enough to significantly improve the situation.
I can only think of the wider history of mankind. Empires rise and fall, wars and pandemics light up and go out. Stories are always just stories that need to be built into reality.
Maybe the United States will still rise and build its story into a new reality. Maybe my friend is right, and the bottom has already been reached.
I look at news photos of Americans queuing for hours at early voting sites in town halls, sports stadiums and youth centers. I'm moved. Although the whole country is in chaos, the electoral process is a mess, and the future is unknown, so many insist on having their voices heard.
A new dawn always comes in the end. Maybe it still looks beautiful.

03/17/21 . . RFK, Jr. to President Biden: No. 1 Driver of Vaccine Hesitancy Is Mistrust of Regulators
Children’s Health Defense Chairman RFK, Jr. says transparency, robust science and a functional surveillance system are the only ways to build public trust for the COVID vaccine.
In a letter to President Joe Biden, Children’s Health Defense Chairman Robert F. Kennedy asks the president to fix the “catastrophically inefficient” surveillance system for vaccine injuries.
Kennedy reminds Biden that first as a candidate, “and later as our president, you promised to give Americans a COVID vaccine program rooted in honesty, transparency and rigorous science.”
Kennedy asks Biden to “intervene now to fix the Vaccine Adverse Events Reporting System and order the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services to adopt an open-source, science-based, functional and verifiable surveillance system that can rebuild public trust.”
Read the letter:
March 15, 2021
President Joe Biden
1600 Pennsylvania Avenue, N.W.
Washington, DC 20500
Dear President Biden:
We write to ask you to fix the HHS’s catastrophically inefficient surveillance system for vaccine injuries. Genuine transparency, robust science (unbiased data gathering and analytics), and a functional surveillance system are the only ways to end widespread vaccine hesitancy, and to build public trust for the COVID-19 vaccine program.
The “Warp Speed” vaccine program allowed pharmaceutical companies to abbreviate clinical trials and rush experimental, unlicensed EUA [Emergency Use Authorization] vaccines to Americans in, what health officials acknowledge is, a population-wide experiment. HHS regulators justified this shortcut by promising to implement a post-licensing surveillance system that would detect vaccine injuries and allow public health authorities, physicians, and Americans to understand the risks and benefits for each of the various vaccines. However, HHS officials are instead adopting procedures designed to hide COVID vaccine injuries — particularly deaths — from the public and to obscure safety and risk profiles.
The sad reality is vaccines cause injuries and death. In the two and one-half months since the U.S. began our COVID vaccination program, there have been 31,079 injuries and 1,524 deathsreported after COVID vaccine. What is also undeniable is that the U.S. is not doing enough to find more about these injuries and deaths, and why some people are more susceptible than others to injury. In this age of individualized medicine, a mass vaccination program that abdicates all responsibility to protect vulnerable subgroups is reckless and unethical.
Vaccine Adverse Event Reporting System (VAERS) is useless for calculating an accurate risk/ benefit assessment. For thirty years, public health officials, including your coronavirus vaccine czar, (then Surgeon General) David Kessler, have complained that HHS’s post-marketing and vaccine injury surveillance system, the Vaccine Adverse Event Reporting System (VAERS), is a failure and needs to be updated. A comprehensive 2010 HHS study acknowledged that the VAERS system captures “fewer than 1% of vaccine injuries.” Similarly, a 2014 internal pharmaceutical industry studyacknowledged that VAERS captures fewer than one in fifty injuries. To make matters worse, there are many anecdotal reports of people being blocked when trying to report deaths and injuries related to COVID vaccines to VAERS. And, there have been at least two times that the entire data system went down for over 48 hours.
To compensate for VAERS’ well-known deficiencies, CDC therefore created the V-safe system to supplement VAERS surveillance of COVID-19 inoculation injuries. V-safe allows recently vaccinated individuals to report injuries using a cell phone app. This system, also being voluntary, is extremely pervious and isn’t interconnected with the existing VAERS system, thus creating two voluntary reporting systems with incomplete data. Most importantly, V-safe is incapable of tabulating deaths following vaccination, since nobody self-reports their own death.
As inefficient as it is, the Vaccine Adverse Reporting System is filled with reports of elderly deaths following COVID-19 vaccines. About 73% of the reported 1,524 COVID deaths to date are over the age of 65 with average age of death 77 (CDC). Since VAERS captures “fewer than 1%,,” it is prudent to assume that the actual number of deaths of the elderly over 65 who died from the COVID vaccine could be as high as 111,200. Social media posts and news reports detailing waves of mortalities at senior care facilities and elsewhere following COVID vaccination support this higher figure.
Autopsy determining death from a vaccine adverse event is nearly impossible to achieve. CDC’s strategy for dealing with deaths following vaccination has been to publicly deny that the COVID vaccines caused any of those deaths and to work with the media and social media sites to remove and censor these reports. This approach is rank chicanery.
CDC’s pronouncement that all deaths after injection are unrelated is rank chicanery. For almost all vaccine injuries, there is no medical or scientific test — even with full autopsies, which are rare in the case of the elderly — to determine if a specific death was vaccine-related. A heart attack or stroke caused by a vaccine looks no different than a heart attack or stroke from natural causes. It takes up to ten years to debate a cause of death or injury from other vaccines in the federal Vaccine Court. How can CDC pretend to know in such short order that the vaccine definitely was not involved?
The only way to determine the risk of death from the COVID vaccines is to tabulate EVERY death in the days following vaccination and then to compare those rates to historic daily death rates in each age category. For example, in 2018, according to the CDC, the background daily death rates among Americans between age 75 and 84 is 12 per 100,000 per day. Only by knowing exactly how many people in that same age cohort die each day in the days following vaccination, can we compare to background rates and reliably judge whether there is an increased risk of death from the vaccine. If, for example, we learn that the death rate immediately following the Moderna vaccine is 30/100,000/day, while the Pfizer vaccine death rate is 12/100,000/ day, regulators can then advise seniors to take the safer vaccine. Instead of scrupulously counting each death following vaccination — as prudence and good public health policy requires — the CDC systematically dismisses all deaths after vaccination as “unrelated” to vaccines. Endeavoring to abolish vaccine injury by fiat is not science. It is propaganda. Many Americans naturally ask themselves, “Why is CDC trying to hide the injuries from the public?”
Americans watching CDC’s practice of attributing every reported case of death in the elderly following vaccination to “coincidence” are stunned by the agency’s cynicism. This practice contrasts sharply with CDC’s strategy of counting every death associated with a viral presence as a COVID death. (CDC has admitted that only 6% of deaths attributed to COVID were unambiguously caused by COVID. The remaining 94% had an average of 3.8 potentially lethal comorbidities.) Instead of transparently giving the public unbiased and reliable facts, CDC is manipulating data by adopting a double standard of inferring causality to inflate COVID deaths and dismissing causality to underestimate vaccine deaths. Unfortunately, many Americans who have been watching CDC’s blatant dishonesty in this regard have concluded that the agency has deliberately and consistently manipulated its data collection and regulatory authority to serve a political agenda. The resulting mistrust of the regulators is the number one driver of vaccine hesitancy.
Your Executive Order doesn’t address the problem. We know you are aware of the issues and gaps regarding vaccine surveillance as your Jan. 21, 2021 executive order outlines, however, the order doesn’t require a real fix by ordering a true surveillance system of all vaccine adverse events and death (beyond and including COVID). Rather it requires a “review” of data. A “review” of bad and incomplete data will yield a bad or incomplete report.
First as a candidate, and later as our President, you promised to give Americans a COVID vaccine program rooted in honesty, transparency, and rigorous science. We ask that you intervene now to fix VAERS and order HHS regulators to adopt an open-source, science-based, functional and verifiable surveillance system that can rebuild public trust.

03/15/21 Virologist: ‘We Are Going to Pay Huge Price’ for COVID Mass Vaccination Campaign
In an open letter to WHO and in a follow-up video interview, Dr. Geert Vanden Bossche, says that by vaccinating everyone with a vaccine that doesn’t prevent transmission, we are destroying people’s immune systems, and setting the stage for a global health disaster.

Geert Vanden Bossche, DMV, Ph.D., has nothing against vaccines. In fact, the independent virologist formerly worked for Gavi, The Vaccine Alliance and the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation.
Bossche says the COVID vaccines approved so far have been developed by “just brilliant” people and he has no criticism of them But, as he tells Dr. Phillip McMillan in an interview, “please use the right vaccine at the right place. And don’t use it in the heat of a pandemic on millions of millions of people.”
Bossche says that a mass vaccination campaign in the middle of a pandemic, with vaccines that don’t prevent transmission, is disastrous at an individual — and at a global — level:
“We are going to pay a huge price for this. And I’m becoming emotional because I’m thinking of my children, of the younger generation. I mean, it’s just impossible what we are doing. We don’t understand the pandemic.”
In an open letter to the World Health Organization (WHO), Bossche wrote that “we are currently turning vaccinees into asymptomatic carriers shedding infectious variants.”
Bossche hasn’t heard back from WHO, which concerns him.
“It is about humanity … I mean, it’s about your children. It’s your family. It’s my family. It’s everyone. Right. And it’s simply for me, I put everything at stake because I’ve done my homework. And this is simply a moral obligation. A moral obligation.”

Read the interview transcript:
McMillan: I think the first thing that we have to clarify is that we have to explain you are someone who is in the vaccine development business, so to speak. What has that background been like?
Bossche: Well, I have a background essentially in, as far as vaccines are concerned, in industry as well as in the non-for-profit sector. So I have been working with Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation, GAVI [The Vaccine Alliance] especially concentrating on vaccines for global health.
And I’ve also been working with several different companies, vaccine companies developing of course essentially prophylactic vaccines and my main focus of interest has always been, in fact, the design of vaccines. So the concept, how can we educate the immune system in ways that are to some extent more efficient than we do right now with our conventional vaccines.
McMillan: Right. And so any effect, this is the area of work you’ve been in. You develop vaccines, you are as well working with the Ebola vaccine as well. One of the really, really dangerous viruses we have out there in the world. How does that work? Is it, is that easy to do?
Bossche: Well, I was not, let me be very clear. I was a coordinator of the Ebola program at GAVI. So we were interacting with several different vaccine companies that were developing Ebola vaccines, because it was important for GAVI to make the right choice, the right vaccine in order for this vaccine to be rolled out in the Western African countries that had this severe Ebola crisis back a number of years ago. So that was not a, let’s say operational practical work.
This was more a role of coordination, but of course was also a role of assessing what would be the impact of using some of these vaccines in larger populations and in an area where an epidemic really is going on because that’s a very particular and peculiar situation.
McMillan: Yes. And so in effect, we’ve had so much success over the past hundred years with some very big breakthroughs with vaccines, smallpox, you know, measles, mumps, rubella, polio. But we have struggled with other vaccines. Without going into the details, because this is very difficult to get across, but is there a difference with how viruses operate that make some easier to get a vaccine for?
Bossche: Well, I think we have a, Philip. Essentially, we need to distinguish, of course, between what we call acute self-limiting diseases. These are diseases that naturally come to an end in a sense that ultimately the individual will eliminate the pathogen. Of course, some people may die. Of course, let’s be very clear. Those who survive will ultimately eliminate the pathogen.
That is the vast majority of the vaccines we have been developing so far. The, you know, I don’t need to tell you that with other viruses where we clearly see that they spread in a completely different way. They spread, for example, from cell to cell, they tend to be more intracellular.
They tend to develop chronic infections where it’s not self-limiting, it’s not acute self-limiting, it’s chronic. It is much more difficult. And the reason primarily is that most of the vaccines we are developing are still antibody-based vaccines.
So we need these antibodies in the blood, or we need these antibodies to translate to the mucosa, for example, in order to capture the pathogen and to neutralize it. So some of the other work, I mean, they have a very insidious strategy in the sense that they hide in cells, that they can already at the mucosal barrier penetrate, you know, immediately into cells. And then the cells may migrate, for example, to the lymph nodes.
So they are shielded from the antibodies and that makes it very, very difficult because we know that we can catch them to some extent in the blood, but what they do all the time is that they insert mutation and they escape, they fully escape to our antibody responses.
So that makes it way more difficult. It’s also the reason why also against cancer, et cetera, we have not been extremely successful with vaccines as I would say, stand alone therapy.
McMillan: Yeah, absolutely. Yes. So it, it brings us into where we are with regards to COVID-19.
Now, if we have 20/20 vision at the moment, when we look back at the pandemic and where we started from, and I’ve always said that at the time, when the pandemic started, when it got from China and Italy into Europe, into the UK. I thought that the only way that we could manage this is to lock down and to prevent the spread of this apparently, this very dangerous virus.
We do have to stand back and to see whether or not those decisions were correct. But as we said, that hindsight is 20/20. What would you say now, as we look back at the decisions we made then, were we about on the right track? Did we make any mistakes?
Bossche: Well, frankly speaking, from the very beginning, and I mean, there are many people who can witness this or testify this. I always said that it was a bad idea to do lockdowns that would also affect the younger people.
That we would prevent younger people from having contact, from being exposed. Because remember, the big difference back then was, of course, that we had a viral strain, COVID strain, that was circulating, dominant strain, and that was not as highly infectious as those that we are seeing right now.
Of course, when a new virus gets into a population, it immediately gets to the folks that have, you know, weak immunity. And we know, we know these people, this is to a large majority, of course, elderly people, people that have underlying diseases or are otherwise immune suppressed, et cetera.
And of course, I mean, it was certainly the right thing to do, to protect these people, and for them also to isolate, but we have to distinguish, frankly speaking, and that is what we have not been doing, between those people that have strong innate immunity. I mean, it’s not a, you cannot see when you see a person, you don’t know this, but we know that young people have quite decent innate immune response and therefore they are naturally protected and even more, I mean, if they get in contact with coronavirus, it will boost their natural immunity.
So therefore from the very beginning, I disapproved, you know, the fact that schools got to close and universities and that youngsters were prevented even from having contact with each other. That situation is of course completely different.
If you look at vulnerable people, the virus, this comes to the population, there is no, you know, humoral immunity. There is no immunity at all. In fact, so nobody has been in contact.
So the youngsters, they can rely on good innate immunity. Elderly people, I mean, the innate immunity is waning. It gets increasingly replaced by antigen-specific, by specific immunity as people get older.
So these people very, very clearly needed to be protected, but it has taken a lot of time before we understood, in fact, how exactly the immune response and the virus were interacting.
So there’s been a lot of confusion. A lot of mistakes made. Mistakes, I mean, retrospectively. And that has also led to, you know, bad control right from the beginning. I would say.
McMillan: With that in mind and where we are now, as countries across the world have been drifting towards the Christmas period, there’s still a rise in cases. Countries had to try and lock down, mask mandates and so on, but we all had the hope that vaccines would come and break the cycle. This is where clearly now from your expertise, you seem to have a different thought about how we should have been thinking about vaccines then, and even now, what is your perspective?
Bossche: Well, my perspective was, and still is, that if you go to war, you better make sure that you have the right weapon and the weapon in itself can be an excellent weapon. And that is what I’m saying really about the current vaccines.
I mean, just brilliant people who have been making these vaccines in no time and with regulatory approval and everything. So the weapon in itself is excellent.
Question is, is this the right weapon for the kind of war that is going on right now? And there my answer is definitely no, because these are prophylactic vaccines and prophylactic vaccines should typically not be administered to people who are exposed to high infectious pressure.
So don’t forget we are administering these vaccines in the heat of a pandemic. So in other words while we are preparing our weapon, we are fully attacked by the virus. The virus is everywhere. So that is a very different scenario from using such vaccines in a setting where the vaccine is barely or not exposed to the virus.
And I’m saying this, because if you have a high infectious pressure, it’s so easy for the virus to jump from one person to the other.
So if your immune response, however, is just mounting, as we see right now with the number of people who get their first dose, they get the first dose, the antibodies are not fully mature, the titers are maybe not very high. So their immune response is suboptimal, but they are in the midst of this war while they are mounting an immune response, they’re fully attacked by the virus and every single time. I mean, this is textbook knowledge.
Every single time you have an immune response that is suboptimal in the presence of an infection, in the presence of a virus, that infected person, you are at risk for immune escape.
So that means that the virus can escape the immune response. And that is why I’m saying that these vaccines, I mean, in their own right, are, of course, excellent. But to use them in the midst of a pandemic and do mass vaccination, because then you provide within a very short period of time, the population with high antibody titers – so the virus comes under enormous pressure.
I mean, that wouldn’t matter if you can eradicate a virus, if you can prevent infection, but these vaccines don’t prevent infection.
They protect against disease because we are just, unfortunately, we look no further than the end of our nose in the sense that hospitalization, that’s all what counts, you know, getting people away from the hospital.
But in the meantime, we are not realizing that we give all the time during this pandemic, by our interventions, the opportunity to escape to the immune, to the immune system.
And that is of course, a very, very, very dangerous thing. Especially, if we realize that these guys, they only need 10 hours to replicate.
So if you think that by making new vaccines, a new vaccine against the new infectious strains, we going to catch up, it’s impossible to catch up. I mean, virus is not going to wait until we have those vaccines ready. I mean, this thing continues.
And as I was saying, the thing is, I mean, if you do this in the midst of a pandemic, that is an enormous problem.
These vaccines are excellent, but they are not made for administration to millions of people in the midst, in the heat of a pandemic. So that is my thoughts.
McMillan: Is this equivalent then, because you’ve mentioned this in your paper, is this equivalent to using either a partial dose of antibiotics in anti-microbial or in a bacterial infection where you then produce super bugs. Is this the kind of example that you’re alluding to?
Bossche: Well, that is a very good parallel. It’s also the parallel I’m using actually in the paper. We just post it on LinkedIn [bad choice, LinkedIn has been deplatforming and censoring scientists and doctors more than any other platform] which, you know, should be so open for everybody [wrong, they outsource to low paid “fact checkers” who aggressively censor according to left media news narratives].
I mean, it’s pure science because as you were pointing out, the thing is the rule is it’s very simple. I mean, same with antibiotics. Either the antibiotics do not match very well with the bug. That’s not good. That’s why we are making antibiograms, you know, to first identify which is the germ. And then we choose the antibiotics. We need to have a very good match. Otherwise there could be resistance.
So when I compare this to the current situation, do we have a good match with our antibodies? No, at this point in time, we don’t have a good match anymore because we have this kind of like almost heterologous variants.
So that differs from the original strain. So the match isn’t very good anymore. And hence we see people are still protected, but they are already shedding the virus. So that is one thing.
The other thing is the quantity, of course. You tell people, you know, you take your antibiotics according to the prescription, please don’t as soon as you feel well, that doesn’t mean that you can stop the antibiotics. Same here.
And I get just one example. If you give people just like one dose, I mean, they are in the process of mounting their antibodies. The antibodies still need to fully mature, et cetera. So this is a suboptimal situation. We are putting them in a suboptimal situation with regard to their immune protection. And on the other end, they are in the midst of the war. They are fully attacked by all, you know, by all these kinds of a highly infectious variants.
So, I mean, it’s very clear that this is driving immune escape and will ultimately drive resistance to the vaccines.
So my point is, yes, Philip, it’s very similar. There is one difference. The virus needs living cells. I mean, if you’re driving immune escape, but the guy has no chance to jump on somebody else, who cares?
This situation is now different because we are in the midst of a war, there is a high infectious pressure. So the likelihood that an immune escape immediately finds another living cell, that means another host is very, very high. It’s per definition. It’s the definition almost of a pandemic.
McMillan: So it raises a simple question that somebody has put in front of us here, which is, it’s perfectly common sense. What do we do?
Bossche: That question is very easy. I mean, we need to do a better job when we are confronted with situations that seem very dramatic. Like, you know, an epidemic. Our generation has not, you know, been living in times where there are epidemics or pandemics.
And so we immediately take action and jump on the beast with the tools we have instead of analyzing what is really going on. And one thing that I thought was extremely interesting was, and it’s something that was not really understood. We know that the number of people or asymptomatically infected, so they are infected, but they don’t develop severe symptoms. Of course they can have some mild symptoms of respiratory disease, whatever.
So the question is what exactly happens with those folks that they can eliminate the virus, they eliminate the virus, they don’t transmit it.
They will shed it for like a week or so. And then they eliminate this, or you could say, yeah, of course we know that antibodies eliminate … Oh, wait a minute. The antibodies come later, you have first the search of, you know, shedding of the virus.
And it’s only afterwards that you see, you know, a moderate and short-lived raise of antibodies. So the antibodies can not be responsible for elimination of the virus. So what is responsible for elimination of the virus? Luckily enough, we have a number of brilliant scientists, independent, brilliant scientists that have now increasingly been showing. And there is increasing evidence that what in fact is happening is that NK cells are taking care of virus.
So NK cells that the virus gets into, into these epithelial cells and starts to replicate, but NK cells get activated and they will kill, they will kill the cell, you know, in which the virus tries to replicate.
So I was saying that the virus needs to rely on a living cell. So you kill that cell. It’s gone, it’s all over. So we have the solution in the pathogenesis because some people eliminate it.
Subscribe to The Defender - It’s Free!
McMillan: Absolutely. I just wanted to clarify, because when you said NK cells, somebody may not quite know what you mean. So you mean non killer cells. So it’s a specific group of …
Bossche: Natural killer cells …
McMillan: Sorry. It’s natural killer cells, a special group of white blood cells that go and take out the viral infected cell. So, yes, you’re right. Because I have seen from a clinical perspective, very old patients who you would expect to be overwhelmed by the virus and they have a few symptoms and then they’re okay. So they, the body does manage to get rid of it in some cases.
And so it raises the point that I’ve always been saying is that we haven’t spent enough time understanding how the virus impacts the body and understanding how the pandemic then will impact the world. We’ve spent all of our time just going for solutions. Has that been a mistake?
Bossche: Of course, this has been the, you know, the most important mistake, I think. I’m not sure many people and I, I was part of them. So in all modesty, I was part of them. Not sure whether many people understand how a natural pandemic develops and why we have this first wave. We have the second wave. And we have this third wave.
And, I mean, these waves of disease and mortality and morbidity, they shift from one population to another. So I’m saying, for example, the second wave, this was typically also the case with influenza, World War I, when basically more soldiers, young people died in the trenches of influenza than from from injuries or whatever. So firstly, elderly, I mean, weak immune system, et cetera. Then it gets to the wave of morbidity and mortality to the younger people.
And then it gets back to people who have antibodies. So we have to understand this first, Oh, how does this come? Why all of a sudden does this wave of morbidity and mortality shift, for example, why are the three waves? How do we explain this? And also, how does it come that some people are naturally protected and others are not? What are these mechanisms, what are these molecular mechanisms?
Because if you make vaccines and all these things, at the end of the day, this is going to interact at the molecular level. And we have not been understanding this. I would just explain it. We don’t understand our weapon because we don’t understand that prophylactic vaccines should not be used in the midst of an epidemic. And we don’t understand exactly what the virus is, do we. So we go to a war and we don’t know our enemy. We don’t understand the strategy of our enemy. And we don’t know how our weapon works. I mean, how is that going to go? We have a fundamental problem to begin with.
McMillan: I understand, and I completely accept that, but at the same time, I am still thinking that if the governments don’t respond in some way, because they have to be seen to be doing something. They seem to be in a lose-lose situation. If they don’t do anything, they’re going to be criticized. And if they do do something, they’re going to be criticized. Is that a fair statement to make?
Bossche: I don’t think so. What was this, oath of, what’s the name of the guy? Hippocrates. You know the rule?
McMillan: The first. Do no harm.
Bossche: Okay. Well, I mean, it wouldn’t matter if you start vaccinating people and even if it doesn’t work. Problem is that we induce a long lived antibody response. And as a matter of fact, we know, I mean, that is not my knowledge. It’s all published.
Problem is that we fail to put the pieces of the puzzle together. Fact is that these long lived antibodies, which have high specificity, of course, for the virus. They out-compete our natural antibodies because they’re natural antibodies, they have a very broad spectrum, but they have low affinity. Right?
And so by doing this, even if your antibodies don’t work anymore, because there is resistance or, you know, that the strains are too different from the original strain, we still, these antibodies, specific antibodies will still continue to out-compete your natural antibodies. And that is a huge problem because I was saying just a few minutes ago, these natural antibodies, they provide you with broad protection.
This protection is, yes, it is variant nonspecific. Doesn’t matter what variant you get. It doesn’t even matter what type of coronavirus is coming in. They will protect you. Unless, of course, you suppress this level of innate immunity, or it is, for example, out-competed by long lived specific antibodies. And so it’s not like, okay, you know, you missed it. Okay, let’s try again. No, you did some harm. I mean, this is different from drugs.
Immunizing somebody is installing a new software on your computer. Don’t forget. I mean, these antibodies, they will be recalled every single time you’re encountering a coronavirus, right? I mean, you cannot just erase this. So this is very serious. This is very serious.
McMillan: So this is an important point because when I was looking at some of the research around the challenges that they faced with the initial SARS, called the first epidemic, and they tried to develop the vaccines. One of the things they found, certainly when they tested it on the ferrets, was that when they expose them to a coronavirus again, they got a very severe response to it. Is this what you’re saying? That we’re putting ourselves in a position where we can then have much more severe disease even to viruses that should normally be quite benign?
Bossche: Well, you know, you see all my passion and my conviction, but I mean, I’ve been the last to criticize the vaccines in terms of, would they, in some regard, could they, in some regard be unsafe because, you know, you would have even this exacerbation of disease due to antibodies that doesn’t match very well with the coronavirus they’re exposed to et cetera.
I know there is reports on this, and there is a lot of serious thoughts about this. But I think what we are talking about right now, the epidemic or the pandemic problem of having a population that is at no point during the pandemic and to large extent, due to our intervention, has not a strong immune response. I mean, this is already serious enough. This is more concerning than one or the other adverse events that could maybe elicited, I’m not downplaying it, but that could maybe be elicited because people have antibodies that do no longer match very well with the strain they were or with the strain they are exposed to.
And therefore, you know, they build a complex, they don’t neutralize the virus, they build a complex and this complex could maybe even enhance viral entry into susceptible cells and hence lead to exacerbation of disease.
I mean, this may be possible, but the problem I’m talking about is a global problem. It’s not an individual getting an adverse event. It’s a global problem of, you know, making this virus increasingly infectious because we live it all the time, a chance and opportunity to escape an immune system and to drive this.
So to wake this up, you know, up to a level where the virus is so infectious, that we can even no longer control it, because I mean, these highly infectious strains, some people think, Oh, the virus is going to calm down and it will insert a number of mutations, you know, just to be gentle and kind with us. That’s not going to happen. I mean, this highly infectious range remains.
It is not going to be spontaneous mutations that all of a sudden would become, would make this virus again harmless because such a virus would have a competitive disadvantage, could not be dominant anymore, so that’s not going to happen. So we’re talking about a very, very, very serious problem here.
McMillan: So I’ve seen the question many times and quite frankly, I get asked the questions. We’re coming to a point where people are going to have to take these vaccines. That looks as though it’s the reality. Either in the context of work or in the context of travel. Based on what you’re saying, they’re in a lose-lose situation. What does this mean?
Bossche: Well, what does this mean? It’s very clear. It’s very clear what this is going to mean.
So let’s consider the consequences of this both at a population level and at an individual level, because I would well understand if for the population is maybe not the best thing to do, but you know, on an individual level, it’s still okay. Yeah. Then it’s not an easy, that’s not an easy question.
But as a matter of fact, it’s exactly the opposite. Well, it’s not the opposite. It is detrimental both on a population level, as on an individual level. And I’m telling you why. I think the population level I explained to you, we are increasingly facing highly infectious strains that already right now, we cannot control because basically what we are doing is that we are turning — when we vaccinate somebody, we are turning this person in a potential asymptomatic carrier that is shedding the virus.
But at an individual level, I just told you that if you have these antibodies and at some point, and I’m sure this, people can challenge me on this, but, you know, reality will prove it.
Bossche: I think we are very close to vaccine resistance right now. And it’s not for nothing that already people start developing, you know, new vaccines against the strains, et cetera.
But what I was saying is that, okay, if you miss the shoot, okay, you could say nothing has happened. No.
You are at the same time losing the most precious part of your immune system that you could ever imagine.
And that is your innate immune system, because the innate antibodies, the natural antibodies, the secretary IGMs will be out-competed by these antigen-specific antibodies for binding to the virus. And that will be long lived. That is a long lived suppression.
And you lose every protection against any viral variant or coronavirus variant, et cetera. So this means that you are left just with no single immune response with your, you know, it’s none, your immunity has become nil.
It’s all gone. The antibodies don’t work anymore. And your your innate immunity has been completely bypassed and this while highly infectious strains are circulating.
So, I mean, if that isn’t clear enough, I really don’t get it. And people please do read my, you know, what I posted because it’s science, it’s pure science, pure science. And as everybody knows, I’m a highly passionate vaccine guy, right?
And I’ve no criticism on the vaccines, but please use the right vaccine at the right place. And don’t use it in the heat of a pandemic on millions of millions of people.
We are going to pay a huge price for this. And I’m becoming emotional because I’m thinking of my children, of the younger generation. I mean, it’s just impossible what we are doing. We don’t understand the pandemic.
We have been turning it into an artificial pandemic.
Who can explain where all of a sudden, all these highly infectious strains come from? Nobody can explain this.
I can explain it. But we have not been seeing this during previous pandemics, during natural pandemics. We have not been seeing it. Because at every single time, the immunity was low enough so that the virus didn’t need to escape. So back at the end of the pandemic, when things calmed down and it was herd immunity, it was still the same virus circulating.
What we are now doing is that we are really chasing this virus and it becomes all, you know, increasingly infectious. And I mean, this is just a situation that is completely, completely completely out of control.
So it’s also, we are now getting plenty of asymptomatic shedders. People who shed the virus because if they are vaccinated or they have even antibodies from previous disease, they can no longer control these highly infectious variants.
So how does that come? Does anybody still understand the curves? I see all these top scientists looking at this curve, at its waves. Like somebody else is looking at the currency rates at the stock market.
All they can say is, Oh, it goes up, it’s stabilizing. It may go down, may go up, et cetera. I mean, that is not science. They don’t have any clue.
They don’t even know whether the curve is gonna go up exponentially or whether it’s gonna go down or whatever. They’re completely lost. And that is extremely scary. That has been the point where I said, okay, guy, you have to analyze. You have to, but you know, these people are not listening. That is the problem.
McMillan: So you are, in effect, putting your reputation on the line because you feel so passionately about this because I guarantee you that no government, no health system is going to want to hear what you are saying. You are, in effect, almost giving fuel to the fire for an anti-vaxxer who doesn’t want the vaccine.
Bossche: No, no, well, no. Because I’ve clearly also addressed some emails from anti-vaxxers. I mean, I’m not interested, but I’m clearly telling them that at this point, it’s so irrelevant, you know, whether you’re a pro vaxxer or an anti-vaxxer, et cetera, it is about the science. It’s about humanity, right?
I mean, let’s not lose our time now with criticizing people or, I mean, anti-vaxxer, okay. If you’re not an anti-vaxxer, you could be a stalker.
You could be, you know, we like to stigmatize because if you stigmatize people, you don’t need to bother about them anymore.
Oh, this guy’s an anti-vaxxer. Okay. I mean, he’s out of the scope. Oh, he’s a stalker. He’s out of the scope. I mean, that is a discussion that is completely irrelevant at this point.
It is about humanity. And of course I’m passionate. Of course, I mean, it’s about your children. It’s your family. It’s my family. It’s everyone. Right. And it’s simply for me, I put everything at stake because I’ve done my homework. And this is simply a moral obligation. A moral obligation.
McMillan: Wow. Wow. I mean, there’s very little one can say, as I said, when you position that you are in the business of developing vaccines and helping societies protect against infections through the use of vaccines, and in this circumstance, you are saying, hold it, we’re doing the wrong thing here. It’s very difficult to not listen to that. That’s the truth.
Bossche: Well, the answer is very easy. I mean, this is human behavior. If you’re, you know, having panic, we do something and we try to make ourselves believe that it is the right thing to do, until there is complete chaos and there is a complete disaster.
And then people say, well, you know, I mean, politicians will probably say, you know, we have been advised by the scientists and scientists, you know, will maybe point to somebody else, but this is now a situation.
I’m asking every single scientist to scrutinize, to look what I’m writing, to do the science and to study exactly the, I call these the immune pathogenesis of the disease. And because I like people to do their homework.
And if the science is wrong, you know, if I’m proven wrong, I will admit it, but I can tell you, I’m not putting my career, my reputation at stake.
I would not do this when I would not be 200% convinced. And it’s not about me, not about me at all. It’s about humanity. People don’t understand what is currently going on. And we have an obligation to explain this.
And I posted my paper on LinkedIn and I invite all independent scientists please to look at it because this can be easily understood by microbiologists, immunologists, geneticists, you know, plenty of biochemists, etc., etc., all the biologists, all these people who have elementary knowledge, it’s not rocket science, elementary knowledge of biology should be able to understand this.
And I mean, I can only appeal to these people, you know, to stand up as independent scientists and to voice their opinion.
McMillan: Yes, yes, yes. I mean, that was a long point that somebody put on about the innate immune response, the false overreacting of the innate immune response, leading to detrimental effects in other coronaviruses. So I think you’ve expressed this so well, Geert. I think that just hearing your explanation, the passion, the focus on the science, I think that that’s as much as you can do. I think that I don’t even want to say any more because I don’t want to lose that passion that you have just expressed.
How much you are doing in terms of trying to see if you can make a difference with regards to the impact that we are having in this pandemic. You know, we really, really appreciate that, Geert. We really, really appreciate that. I hope enough people share this, and listen to it, certainly because I’m connected with a lot of scientists. Please connect to Geert, take a look at his paper and see what you think. And as you said, let’s make decisions based on science. That’s the best that we can do at this point.
Wonderful. Just stay on the line there. We’re just going to close off now, Geert. So thank you again very, very much, Geert. And I hope maybe we can speak again in the near future to expand a little bit further on what you have said.
Bossche: Thanks, Philip, for having me on.
Mea Culpa: The Pope Apologizes for His Church
By Gustav Niebuhr
WITH his special Mass at the Vatican today, Pope John Paul II has set out to do what none of his 262 predecessors felt called to do: apologize for historical transgressions committed by Roman Catholics in the name of the church.
In so doing, John Paul -- whose pontificate has been remarkable in many ways, from his globe-circling pastoral travels, to his support for democratic change in Eastern Europe -- is acknowledging the grim side of the church's past, in eras distinguished by forced conversions, support for the Crusades (whose violence fell on Jews, Muslims and Eastern Orthodox), and creation of the Inquisition.
No one can deny that his statement of mea culpa will be a significant event in the life of the church, as it may also be for the descendants of those who fell victim to its persecution. But the pope's apology should also be viewed within its theological context -- it will, after all, take place during a Mass and is fully in keeping with the Christian belief that repentance of misdeeds is necessary to future service to God. ''Forgive us our trespasses,'' asks the prayer that, according to the Gospels, Jesus taught his disciples.
In an ecumenical sense, the apology is the dramatic culmination of an unusual period of public penance by major Christian groups. In the mid-1990's, for example, three American Protestant denominations issued statements of repentance -- the Southern Baptists for supporting slavery and segregation, the Evangelical Lutheran Church in America for anti-Jewish writings by the Reformation leader Martin Luther, and the United Methodists for the brutality of a lay preacher who led a Civil War-era Indian massacre in Colorado.
Of greater global impact, however, was another, recent statement by the Vatican -- the 1998 ''call to penitence'' on behalf of Catholics who remained silent in the face of the Holocaust. ''We deeply regret the errors and failures of those sons and daughters of the church,'' the statement said.
That document provoked a contentious reaction, some hailing it as a boon to Catholic-Jewish relations, others criticizing its cautious tone and failure to acknowledge Pope Pius XII's refusal to speak out publicly against the Nazi genocide.
This coming apology may evoke a similar response. A preliminary document released by the Vatican two weeks ago made it clear that the apology would have limits, that it will be offered on behalf of the church's ''sons and daughters,'' but not the church itself, which is considered holy, the bride of Christ. It is also most unlikely that the pope will discuss blame for specific events -- no naming names, in other words.
''This is not a kind of politically correct exercise in self-abnegation,'' said George Weigel, a senior fellow at the Ethics and Public Policy Center in Washington and author of a recent biography of John Paul II, ''Witness to Hope'' (HarperCollins). ''This is the pope making plain in a liturgical context that the people of the church have failed to make plain the truth that the church bears.''
Some may wonder whether the pope will somehow undercut the church's doctrine of papal infallibility by effectively rejecting actions of some of his predecessors. But his apology can also be understood as affirming that doctrine, which applies to the church's teaching on Christian faith and morals.
''It's the acts which contradict the teachings, which make the apology pertinent,'' said the Rev. Michael J. Baxter, a professor of theology at the University of Notre Dame. The apology acknowledges that the church, through the men and women who make up its ranks, ''has strayed from its own mission,'' Father Baxter said. ''And yet that doesn't undermine the integrity of the mission, which impresses its importance on us all the more.''
One might ask, too, why now? After all, it's been centuries since the Crusades and Inquisition.
The answer may lie in timing, personal outlook and recent history: the symbolic significance of the dawn of the third Christian millennium, combined with the readiness of this particular pontiff to face the past, and a watershed event in the church's history (the reformist Second Vatican Council of the 1960's) that provided the institutional basis for making such a reckoning possible.
In addition, the pope's apology comes during a Year of Jubilee, a Holy Year, when tens of millions of Catholics are expected to make a pilgrimage to Rome. March 12 is also the first Sunday in Lent, the 40-day fast in the church calendar that precedes Easter.
''That's no coincidence, I'm quite sure,'' said Father Baxter. ''Lent is a time of reconciliation.''
The idea that in order to follow Christ, ''one needs to begin from a disposition of repentance'' is a recurring and vital theme in John Paul's encyclicals, Father Baxter said, adding that it has been an essential tradition of the church that a confessional examination of the past is required if one is to move forward faithfully into the future.
In addition, Father Baxter said, by offering an apology for past transgressions, a gesture that would include the Crusades and the Inquisition, the pope is giving a new endorsement to the most controversial document of the Second Vatican Council, the Declaration on Religious Freedom, promulgated in 1965.
That document, heavily influenced by the thinking of the American theologian John Courtney Murray, rejected the idea that religious and political power should be linked. It treated the idea of religious pluralism with respect and declared that people accept faith as a free act and cannot be compelled to do so. ''In order to convey the truth,'' Father Baxter said, ''how one conveys it makes all the difference in the world. And one cannot convey that unless one embodies the peace of God revealed in Christ.''
But after the pope makes the apology, what effect will it have in the wider Catholic world? Will it inspire Catholics in Europe (scene of the Crusades and Inquisition) to reflect more positively on religious minorities in their midst? ''Now the question is, how much of this will be implemented at the pew level?'' said Rabbi Leon Klenicki, interreligious affairs director of the Anti-Defamation League of B'nai B'rith.

"The Limits to Growth: A Final Warning" tells you about the authors work since the early seventies, my work since 1980, and the stage of the "science of overpopulation analysis." Dr. Jorgen Randers, "2052: A Global Forecast for the Next Forty Years," and Lester Brown, "World on The Edge," have portended the fate of the world, due to overpopulation since the seventies! However limited I see their understanding of "abrupt climate change."
