A Major Ocean Current Is at Its Weakest Point in 1,000 Years Natural variations are currently the main cause, but climate change should continue to cause it to slow down By Chelsea Harvey, E&E News on April 27, 2022, Scientific American A gigantic ocean current, which transports heat around the globe and helps regulate weather patterns throughout the North Atlantic, appears to be slowing down. In fact, recent research has found that it’s currently at its weakest point in the last 1,000 years. The big question: Is climate change causing the slowdown? Or is it just a natural fluctuation? For now, scientists say, it’s probably some of both. A new study, published Monday in the journal Nature Climate Change, finds that the current is indeed slowing and that climate change is likely playing at least a small part. But the current’s behavior is still within the range of its own natural patterns. In other words, the climate change signal hasn’t yet pushed the current outside the bounds of its historically “normal” behavior. The signal from natural variability “basically dominates” the signal from human-caused warming, according to lead study author Mojib Latif, a scientist at the GEOMAR Helmholtz Centre for Ocean Research Kiel in Germany. Still, that’s likely to change at some point in the future. Climate models indicate that human-caused global warming should cause the current to continue slowing over time. If the world keeps on warming, the current’s behavior eventually should tip outside the bounds of natural variability, flowing into uncharted territory. Exactly how quickly that process will unfold, and how strong the slowing will be, is still a matter of scientific debate. But it’s a serious question. Officially known as the Atlantic Meridional Overturning Circulation, or AMOC, the current ferries heat between the equator and the Arctic like a giant liquid conveyor belt. As a result, it’s largely responsible for the mild weather conditions enjoyed by much of the North Atlantic region, including Europe and the eastern United States. If the current continues to slow, it could disrupt weather patterns throughout the midlatitudes. Parts of the North Atlantic may cool, while areas farther south along the U.S. East Coast may get warmer. In fact, some data suggests these processes already are starting to happen. Multiple studies in recent years have made it clear the AMOC is slowing. Some research suggests it may have been weakening for at least 150 years. Still, the best, most direct measurements of the AMOC’s flow come from the last 20 years or so, when scientists began installing wide networks of special ocean sensors throughout the region. That makes it challenging to compare the AMOC today with its past behavior—meaning it’s difficult to determine whether the current slowdowns are part of a natural pattern. Scientists have found various ways to address the issue. Some studies have used long-buried sediment samples pulled from the ocean floor. These samples contain chemical information about what ocean conditions were like hundreds of years ago. The new study uses historical records of sea surface temperatures throughout the Atlantic, dating back to the year 1900. Because changes in the AMOC’s flow can affect ocean temperatures in different ways throughout the region, these records can help scientists evaluate how the current has changed over time. They also paired their historical analyses with simulations from climate models, which help them investigate the causes behind changes in the AMOC. The study suggests there is, in fact, a signal from human-caused global warming. Climate change is playing at least some role in the AMOC’s behavior. It’s “a kind of fingerprint” of human-caused warming, according to Latif. But the influence of natural variability is, for now, still stronger. The AMOC has a tendency to fluctuate over time, and its current behavior is still within the bounds of a natural pattern. This doesn’t mean the current isn’t slowing or that global warming isn’t playing a part, Latif cautioned. The current is, indeed, slowing down. And even if it’s still within the bounds of natural behavior, the influence of climate change is getting stronger all the time in the background. “As greenhouse gases continue to accumulate in the atmosphere, all models predict a major slowing of the circulation,” he said. It’s just a matter of when that signal becomes the dominant force acting on the current. If not today, then it will be at some point in the future as long as the planet continues to warm. The study’s findings are “fully consistent” with other recent research on the AMOC’s slowing, said Stefan Rahmstorf, an ocean expert at the Potsdam Institute for Climate Impact Research in Germany, in an email to E&E News. Rahmstorf wasn’t involved with the new study, but has published several major papers over the last few years on the weakening AMOC. He noted there’s ample evidence for at least some influence from human-caused warming. That includes the “fingerprint” of climate change observed in the new paper this week, the fact that climate models predict a slowdown in response to greenhouse gas emissions and the trend in which recent slowing appears to be the most extreme in the last millennium. The study also highlights the importance of continued direct monitoring in the Atlantic, Latif added. Ocean sensors aren’t cheap to install or maintain, and they need continuous funding. But they’re the best way for scientists to keep tabs on what’s really happening to the AMOC over time. “All this needs to be maintained,” Latif said. “That’s the bottom line.” Reprinted from E&E News with permission from POLITICO, LLC. High sea surface temperature in North Atlantic SST World (60S-60N) On April 20, 2023, sea surface temperatures (between 60°South and 60°North) had been at 21°C or higher for as many as 32 days. Such temperatures are unprecedented in the NOAA record that goes back to 1981.  On April 4, the sea surface temperature in 2023 (black line) was as much as 0.3°C higher than in 2022 (orange line) and we're only just entering the upcoming El Niño.  SST North Atlantic The situation is especially critical in the North Atlantic. Vast amounts of ocean heat in the North Atlantic are moving toward the Arctic, threatening to cause rapid melting of Arctic sea ice and thawing of permafrost. Last year, North Atlantic sea surface temperatures reached a record high of 24.9°C in early September and, as illustrated by the image below, the North Atlantic sea surface temperature on April 20 was as much as 0.5°C higher in 2023 (black) than in 2022 (orange).  As we're moving into the upcoming El Niño, the Arctic Ocean can be expected to receive more and more heat over the next few years, i.e. more heat from direct sunlight, more heat from rivers, more heat from heatwaves and more ocean heat from the Atlantic Ocean and the Pacific Ocean. Temperature rise As illustrated by the image below, the difference in global temperatures (Land+Ocean) between November 2022 and March 2023 is already about half a degree Celsius and we are not even in an El Niño yet.  Rising temperatures threaten to trigger massive loss of sea ice (and loss of albedo) and eruptions of methane from the seafloor of the Arctic Ocean. Over the next few years, feedbacks threaten to start kicking in with increased ferocity and important tipping points threaten to get crossed, such as the latent heat tipping point and the seafloor methane tipping point.  El Niño can be expected to reach its full strength within a few years, with a maximum possible in 2026. Altogether, the rise from pre-industrial could be more than 18.44°C by 2026. Meanwhile, humans are likely to go extinct with a rise of 3°C and most life on Earth will disappear with a 5°C rise. Photo: Lukas Coch (AP) A shutdown of a major current in the Atlantic Ocean would rapidly transform wind, temperature, and precipitation patterns across the whole globe, according to new research. The current is already slowing, likely at least in part because of human-caused climate change. Now, scientists have found that, if the Atlantic Meridional Overturning Circulation (AMOC) collapses completely, there would be never-before-predicted impacts, according to a study published last week in the journal Nature Climate Change. The researchers determined that, without the AMOC, the tropical Pacific Ocean cools, and trade winds intensify and shift south. The resulting climate state would resemble a permanent La Niña and could trigger catastrophic monsoons and flooding in the South Pacific, along with increased drought and heat in parts of North America. In other words: If human actions make the AMOC run amok, the ensuing climate chaos would be even worse and weirder than previously expected. What is the AMOC?The Atlantic Meridional Overturning Circulation is a critical pattern of flow that moves warmer water from farther south into the North Atlantic Ocean. It transports carbon, nutrients, and heat—helping to fuel fisheries and regulate Europe’s mild climate. The AMOC is why London is very close in latitude to L’Anse-au-Loup in Canada’s Newfoundland and Labrador but has an average January temperature that’s 39 degrees Fahrenheit warmer. AMOC’s conveyer belt is driven by gradients of heat and salty-ness in the ocean. Differences in density push water around. As ice melts or the oceans freeze, the relative temperature and salinity of water changes, and so currents do, too. The AMOC has shifted throughout Earth’s history and, at times in the distant past, has even halted. The last time the AMOC slowed to a near stop was about 14,500 years ago, toward the end of the last ice age, as the planet began to warm. When that happened, the Northern Hemisphere was catapulted back into cold conditions for another 3,000 years. What’s happening to the AMOC now?Past research has shown that the critical current has slowed by about 15% since the 1950s, at least in part because of oceanic and atmospheric shifts wrought by human-caused climate change. Since the flow is so crucial for our climate’s stability, the possible collapse of the current is considered a major “tipping point,” or an irreversible and worrying threshold, among climate scientists. Yet just because the AMOC is slowing, doesn’t mean its collapse is imminent. One recent study published in April (also in Nature Climate Change) concluded the current is less sensitive to ice melt and influxes of freshwater than previously thought. Even under the worst-case emissions scenarios, the 2014 5th IPCC report projected the AMOC will only slowdown by about one-third—not fully stop—by 2100. Scientists have emphasized that other major climate tipping points are much closer to happening within our lifetimes, like the Amazon Rainforest’s pending ecological failure. It may be a poor consolation, but before you become super-anxious about a sudden Day After Tomorrow-type scenario, know that there are more pressing apocalyptic benchmarks to focus on. But what happens if the AMOC does collapse?So, that big caveat aside: What happens if the ocean’s current conga line hits a wall after all? The new study offers a fuller portrait of that possible but unlikely future. From past research, we already know that without the AMOC, the Northern Hemisphere and most of the Atlantic Ocean gets a lot colder, and sea ice expands. This new study reaffirms that and projects that some sections of the North Atlantic and coastal Europe would experience average temperature drops of more than 15 degrees Celsius, or 27 degrees Fahrenheit, over the course of a few decades. According to the researchers’ models though, the collapse of AMOC wouldn’t just mean changes in the Atlantic Basin or the Northern Hemisphere—but rather an abrupt and worldwide shift in climate everywhere. In a tweet thread, Matthew England, one of the study authors, broke down the results with a wild-looking map. The northern Pacific Ocean would cool. Patches of the Northern Hemisphere would get drier, while patches of the South become wetter. Atmospheric pressure would shift to be much higher over Eurasia and other parts of the Northern Hemisphere. Trade winds from the north would move farther south and get stronger. Other winds elsewhere would also intensify. Antarctic ice could melt even faster. In short: all the basics about the planet we know and love get thrown way out of whack. No corner of Earth is forecast to be unaffected by an AMOC collapse in the new research. “A collapse of the Atlantic overturning circulation has global climate impacts,” study author Byram Orihuela-Pinto told Gizmodo in an email. Orihuela-Pinto is currently an oceanography PhD candidate at the University of New South Wales in Sydney, Australia. An AMOC collapse “alters the tropical Pacific ocean currents and winds in a way that resembles a La Niña mean state,” he continued. The weather phenomenon La Niña is the converse to El Niño. Both have global effects and are caused by patterns of ocean surface temperature that alter atmospheric pressure. The fluctuations generally occur every two to seven years. When La Niña happens, temperatures drop and rainfall increases across regions, including parts of the South Pacific, southern China, and India. At the same time, among other impacts, a swathe of the southern U.S. becomes warmer and dryer. Some of the worst flooding in Australia’s history has been linked to La Niña, as has the historic, catastrophic, ongoing California drought. The AMOC is slowing down, it is projected to slow further, and our work [only] looks at what this might mean for global climate if the current collapses altogether,” wrote Orihuela-Pinto. Nothing that he and his colleagues found is guaranteed (or even particularly likely) to happen, especially if we work to mitigate climate change. Its also important to note that the researchers relied on models to come to their “what-if” conclusions. As with all model-based studies, there are big limits to what this research can tell us on its own and how definitive the results are. Their modeling methods are robust and in line with previous work, said Feng He, a climate scientist at the University of Wisconsin-Madison who is uninvolved in the new study, in an email to Gizmodo. But, “the lack of data verification makes this paper less convincing.” There are a lot of indicators in Earth’s paleo record that can be used to help reconstruct what past regional climates were like when the AMOC was much slower. Feng He pointed out that this study doesn’t double-check the model’s results by comparing them to that record. “I would like to see more studies to confirm this finding, as we have extensive proxy data during the past when AMOC was believed to be much weaker.” So, we should look to the past to get a better grip on our potential future. How far back we have to look, though, depends on how far we let climate change go.

The blue trend, based on Jan.1850-Mar.2023 NOAA data, points at a 3°C rise in 2032. The magenta trend, based on Oct.2010-Mar.2023 NOAA data, better reflects variables such as El Niño and sunspots, and illustrates how they could trigger a rise of more than 5°C in 2026. Anomalies are versus 1901-2000 (not versus pre-industrial).  Could it be possible for the temperature to keep following the magenta trend? Let's have a look at how dire the situation is. Greenhouse gas concentrations keep rising Reducing emissions is the right thing to do, even though it comes with loss of the aerosol masking effect, a loss that causes a rise in temperatures, as discussed in an earlier post. Yet, despite pledges by politicians, greenhouse gas concentrations in the atmosphere keep rising, as discussed earlier, such as in this post.  The above image illustrates that carbon dioxide (CO₂) was at a record high at Mauna Loa, Hawaii, in three ways:
CO₂ typically reaches its annual high in May or June, so these records can be expected to be broken over the next few months. 
make a difference of more than half a degree Celsius, as illustrated by the images below, adapted from NOAA. NOAA has issued an El Niño Watch, and the range of possibilities toward the end of the year includes a strong El Niño (4 in 10 chance of Niño-3.4 ≥ 1.5°C) to no El Niño (1 in 10 chance).  As illustrated by the image below, the difference in temperature between November 2022 and March 2023 already is about half a degree Celsius and we are not even in an El Niño yet. El Niño is expected to reach its full strength within a few years, with a maximum possible in 2026. Furthermore, sunspots look set to reach a high maximum within years, and the 2022 Tonga submarine volcano eruption did add a huge amount of water vapor to the atmosphere, as discussed in an earlier post. With further melting of sea ice and thawing of permafrost, the Arctic Ocean can be expected to receive more and more heat over the next few years, i.e. more heat from direct sunlight, more heat from rivers, more heat from heatwaves and more ocean heat from the Atlantic Ocean and the Pacific Ocean. Last year, North Atlantic sea surface temperatures reached a record high of 24.9°C in early September. This situation calls for urgent action. Reducing emissions alone won't be enough. Carbon also needs to be removed from the atmosphere and oceans, through re-/afforestation, through pyrolysis of biowaste with the resulting biochar (and nutrients) returned to the soil and further methods. Even with a rapid transition to clean, renewable energy, with changes to food, land use, construction and waste management, and with removal of large amounts of carbon from the atmosphere and oceans, still more action is needed.
