Chinese Gas Drilling Rig Finds Deposit in Russian Arctic The rig has found a total of 1.2 trillion cubic meters of gas in the Kara Sea By The Barents Observer May 20, 2019  Chinese gas drilling rig the Nan Hai Ba Hao, in cooperation with Russia’s Gazprom, has found a large natural gas deposit in the Kara Sea, bringing the total it has identified in the area over the past decade to more than 1.2 trillion cubic meters. The rig, which weighs 15,469 metric tons has been transported from the South China Sea to the Russian Arctic two years in a row. In 2017, it drilled in the Leningradskoye license area of the Kara Sea, and the following year in the nearby Rusanvoskoye area. Gazprom has confirmed that the Rusanvoskoye drilling discovered 390.2 billion cubic meters of gas. The discovery has been named after Soviet Energy Minister Vassily Dinkov and is located about 100 kilometers off the west coast of the Yamal Peninsula.  The Nan Hai Ba Hao is owned by the China Oilfield Service Limited. The rig will be back in Russian Arctic waters in 2019, according to the Northern Sea Route administration. Gazprom’s Arcticheskaya and Amazon rigs have also been active in the Kara Sea, in the Nyarmeysky and Severo-Obskoye license areas. Both rigs are owned by Gazprom subsidiary Gazprom Flot. According to Gazprom, drilling in the Nyarmeysky plot revealed a total of 120.8 billion cubic meters. The Severo-Obskoye structure holds more than 300 billion cubic meters, license holder Novatek has said. The discoveries offshore in the Kara Sea come as both Gazprom and Novatek are in the process of making unprecedented field developments in the nearby Yamal Peninsula. Gazprom operates the Bovanenkovo field and will, in 2023, launch production at the Kharasavey field. Rosneft Discovers Oil in Laptev Sea  PUBLISHED JUN 18, 2017 4:59 PM BY THE MARITIME EXECUTIVE Russian oil major Rosneft has discovered oil in the Laptev Sea after drilling its northernmost exploratory well on the Eastern Arctic shelf. The Tsentralno-Olginskaya-1 well was the first well drilled in the Laptev Sea and is located in the Khatanga license area which has water depths of up to 32 meters (105 feet). The company was awarded the license in November 2015 and began drilling in April this year. The Khatanga field's resource potential is yet to be confirmed, but seismic studies indicate 114 promising oil and gas-bearing structures, and preliminary estimates are that the sea may have a resource potential of 9.5 billion tons of oil equivalent. The sea has a severe climate with temperatures below 0 °C (32 °F) for more than nine months of the year. Currently, Rosneft owns 28 license areas on the Arctic shelf with total resources in the region estimated to be 34 billion tons of oil equivalent. Russia estimates that the Arctic shelf will account for 20 to 30 percent of Russia's total oil production by 2050. Rosneft and its partners plan to invest over $8 billion in developing Russia's offshore energy industry in the next five years. Shtokman Natural Gas Project, Barents Sea, Russia The Shtokman field, which is also known as the Stockman field, is a Russian-controlled gas development in the centre of the Russian sector of the Barents Sea, about 370 miles (500km) north of the Kola Peninsula. The gas field is estimated to be one of the world’s largest natural gas deposits with reserves estimated at 3.8 trillion cubic metres of natural gas and about 37m tonnes of gas condensate. Gas was discovered in this area in 1988, but the resource was not developed earlier because the sea varies in depth from 320m to 340m and the extreme cold conditions of the Arctic (gas deposits lie in four main layers and the reservoir depth is between 1,900m and 2,300m). One of the great hazards for production platforms will be iceberg collision (one million tonnes), which will be countered by using floating removable platforms. The company with the rights to explore for and produce gas from this field is Sevmorneftegaz, which is a subsidiary of Gazprom. In order to develop the field Gazprom needed the expertise and investment of foreign oil companies and a special purpose vehicle (SPV), called the Shtokman Development Company, was set up to develop and exploit the field. Shtokman Development was formed in February 2008 (Swiss registered) and the ownership is split up as follows: Gazprom (51%), Total (25%) and StatoilHydro (24%). When phase one is completed Total and StatoilHydro are expected to transfer their shares to Gazprom. “The Shtokman gas field is estimated to be one of the world’s largest natural gas deposits.” The Shtokman field was expected to come onstream by 2013-15 and development costs were estimated at between $12 and $25bn for the first phase ($50bn overall investment). The first gas was expected in 2013 at 11bcm a day along with 205,000t of gas condensate per year. First LNG was expected in 2014 at 7.5MTA. However, in February 2010, the project development schedule was postponed for three years due to a decrease in demand for gas in European markets. Gas production from the facility will now start in 2016. The first LNG production has also been postponed until 2017 due to changes in the targeted US LNG market. The investment decision for the field development will be made by March 2011, while for LNG the decision will be made in December 2011. Four phases in total are scheduled for full field development, which will deliver 71.1bcm per year, 30MTA of LNG and 600,000t of gas condensate per year over a 50-year period. Shtokman projects Among the great problems with developing such a resource are where the gas will be marketed and how to transport it. Sevmorneftegaz and the Shtokman Development Company are working on the phase I development (design and construction) of the Shtokman infrastructure. This will include a production complex, a pipeline network and an LNG plant. The gas was initially destined for the US market as LNG export but Gazprom has also indicated that it wants to export some of the produced gas to Europe via the Nord Stream pipeline and this will require a pipeline spur from the Shtokman field to the Murmansk Oblast and then via Kola peninsula to Volkhov in the Leningrad Oblast. An LNG production facility is also planned and will be constructed in the village of Teriberka, which is situated about 72 miles (120km) east of Murmansk. 28 October 2021 President of Russia estimates Yamal gas reserves Gas reserves in Yamal exceed 50 trillion cubic meters, and gas production at the Bovanenkovo gas field can continue for another 100 years or more. The deposit also serves as a test ground for innovative technology concepts. “Importantly, the Yamal gas production center is playing a key role in developing Russia’s gas industry in the 21st century. Gazprom’s gas reserves alone exceed 20 trillion cubic meters. Total gas reserves in the Yamalo-Nenets Autonomous Area are over 50 trillion cubic meters,” President Vladimir Putin said at a meeting on developing the Yamal Peninsula’s resource potential. He added that “large-scale projects are being implemented successfully on the Yamal Peninsula, including the largest field, Bovanenkovo. Gas will be produced here for many decades, for 100 years, maybe even longer,” said the president. According to President Putin, the efficiency of the technology used can be seen in the commissioning of new wells and the Bovanenkovo-Ukhta 2 gas pipeline. “In addition, with our foreign partners, projects for LNG production have been launched in Yamal. The Yamal LNG plant with a capacity of 19 million tons per year is operational; Arctic LNG 2, which will annually produce almost 20 million tons of LNG, is under construction,” President Putin pointed out. He also recalled that the Arctic seaport of Sabetta had been built from the ground up to service these centers. “These and other projects to develop the Russian Arctic will make it possible to meet demand on the domestic and international markets for the long term, and will make a large contribution to ensuring Eurasian energy security,” summed up the president. Photo: Gazprom Biggest Arctic gas field now in full production Ten years after Gazprom started development of the huge natural gas reserves in Yamal, the company opens the third and final part of its Bovanenkovo project. «Dear Vladimir Vladimirovich! I can now confirm that the Ukhta-Torzhok-2 pipeline has been connected with the Russian gas supply system and that natural gas is flowing in the prescribed volumes.» Leader of Gazprom’s subsidiary unit in Ukhta symbolically pushes the button and the new 970 km long pipeline is officially launched. «I congratulate you with this result,» Putin responded. «It is significant for the whole economy of Russia,» he underlined. Wednesday’s ceremony was transmitted in a direct video between Putin’s office and three of Gazprom’s key project sites. With the official launch of the new pipeline, one of Russia’s biggest natural gas fields now delivers with full capacity. Bovanenkovo holds about 4,9 trillion cubic meters of natural gas and will be able to deliver as much as 115 billion cubic meters per year for as long as 110 years. It has been Gazprom’s top priority since it in 2008 started construction works in the remote tundra lands of the Yamal Peninsula. Transformation of the area has been whopping. Previously, here was nothing but desolate tundra inhabited by reindeer and herders. Now a Gazprom company town with several thousand people is on site. An airport provides direct flights to Moscow and other key Russian cities and a 572 km long railway line is connected with the national rail grid. The natural gas flows towards consumers in the EU. Four major west-bound pipelines have been built from the Yamal Peninsula, through the Komi Republic and to Torzhok, the hub not far from St.Petersburg. Company subsidiary Gazprom Transgaz Ukhta manages all the infrastructure, including the two Bovanenkovo-Ukhta pipelines and the two Ukhta-Torzhok pipelines. The natural gas from Yamal will ultimately be instrumental for feeding the North Stream-2, the pipeline that is currently being built through the Baltic Sea. Billions of dollars have been spent on the development of fields and infrastructure in the Yamal. And more is to come. In July this year, Gazprom announced that it is starting to develop the Kharasavey, a 2 trillion cubic meter field located on the southwestern side of Yamal. Construction works are due to start in 2019 and be completed in 2023. That includes the laying of a 100 km long pipeline to Bovanenkovo Annual production from Kharasavey will amount to 32 billion cubic meters per year. In addition comes the so-called Tambey fields, which hold an estimated 7,7 trillion cubic meters. Gazprom is now getting ready to develop also these fields, company CEO Aleksey Miller said in Wednesday’s ceremony. The total volumes of natural gas in Yamal are estimated to almost 17 trillion cubic meters. «These are enormous and world-class reserves, which will allow Russia to confidently strengthen its energy security and provide reliable supplies to our foreign partners,» Vladimir Putin underlined. Kharasaveyskoye Gas Field, Yamal Peninsula
The Kharasaveyskoye gas field located in the Yamal Peninsula in Russia is being developed by Gapzrom. It is located to the north of the Bovanenkovskoye field, which is the largest field in the Peninsula reserves. Full-scale development works on the Kharasaveyskoye field were commenced in March 2019 and include pad-filling works for roads and production facilities. Drilling of production wells is scheduled to be started in June 2020. First production from the field is expected to be achieved in 2023. The field is anticipated to produce 32 billion cubic metres (bcm) of gas a year and is expected to create approximately 5,500 construction jobs. The gas field is expected to remain in production for 108 years.
