By Laura Paddison, CNN Updated 2:59 PM EST, Tue February 21, 2023 CNN — Antarctic sea ice (CLICK FOR VIDEO) has reached record low levels for the second time in two years, with some scientists alarmed that dramatic drops are a signal the climate crisis may now be more clearly influencing this vast, complex and isolated region. The sea ice that fringes Antarctica dropped to just 737,000 square miles (1.91 million square kilometers) on February 13, according to the National Snow and Ice Data Center, or NSIDC, below the previous record of 741,000 square miles (1.92 million square kilometers) set on February 25 last year. Sea ice could still shrink further; the lowest level of the southern summer may not be reached for more than a week. The last two years mark the only time that sea ice levels have dipped below 2 million square kilometers since satellites began monitoring it in 1978. It’s “not just ‘barely a record low,’” Ted Scambos, a glaciologist at the University of Colorado Boulder, told CNN. “It’s on a very steep downward trend.”  Unlike the Arctic, where the rate of sea ice loss has followed a fairly consistent downward trajectory as climate change accelerates, Antarctic sea ice extent has swung up and down, making it harder to figure out how the continent and its surrounding ocean are responding to global heating. The two polar regions are very different. While the Arctic is an ocean surrounded by continents, Antarctica is a continent surrounded by the ocean – this means its sea ice can grow outward, unconstrained by land. Antarctic ice tends to be thinner than Arctic ice, with greater highs in the winter and steeper declines in the summer. So-called Doomsday Glacier is 'in trouble,' scientists say after finding surprising formations under ice shelf. Climate models projected declines in Antarctic sea ice that were similar to the Arctic, but until recently the region was behaving completely differently than those models predicted. It hit a record high for winter sea ice extent in 2014 when it reached 7.76 million square miles, which seemed to support the idea that the Antarctic may be relatively insulated from global warming. Air temperatures have been higher than usual in parts of the Antarctic, around 1.5 degrees Celsius above the long term average. Another important consideration is the belt of westerly winds which circle Antarctica, known as the Southern Annular Mode. These winds, which can increase sea ice melt, have been stronger than usual, according to the NSIDC, and added to weather conditions that pump warm air to the region. The strength of the winds has been linked, in part, to the increase of planet-heating pollution as well as the hole in the ozone layer above the continent. There are also suggestions that sea ice may be melting because of warmth trapped just below the surface of the ocean, Scambos said. “Basically, you’re getting heat stirred into the upper layer [of water] around the Antarctic,” he said. If that theory holds up, and is linked to the general warming of the oceans, “then that has big implications for the stability of the Antarctic ice sheet.” The disappearance of sea ice can have cascading effects in Antarctica and beyond. While it doesn’t directly affect sea levels, because it is already floating in the ocean, the loss of the fringe of sea ice around the Antarctic leaves coastal ice sheets and glaciers exposed to waves and warm ocean waters, making them much more vulnerable to melting and breaking up. An altered Antarctic landscape could have significant impacts on its wildlife, from the microorganisms and algae that prop up the food chain – food for krill which, in turn, feed many of the region’s whales – to the penguins and seals that rely on sea ice for feeding and resting. Parts of Antarctica have been seeing alarming changes for a while. The Antarctic Peninsula, a spindly chain of icy mountains which sticks off the west side of the continent like a thumb pointing toward South America, is one of the fastest warming places in the Southern Hemisphere. Carlos Moffat, an oceanographer at the University of Delaware, who has just returned from a research trip to the Antarctic Peninsula, told CNN that the low sea ice and very warm ocean temperatures they found “are dramatically different from what we have observed in the last few decades.” Iceberg roughly the size of London breaks off in Antarctica Moffat, who visits the region every summer as part of the Palmer Long-Term Ecological Research, said: “This year’s conditions are against a backdrop of long-term change in this region of Antarctica.” Last year, scientists said West Antarctica’s vast Thwaites Glacier – also known as the “Doomsday Glacier” – was “hanging on by its fingernails” as the planet warms, with rapid retreat possible over the next few years. Scientists have estimated global sea level rise could increase by around 10 feet if Thwaites collapsed completely, devastating coastal communities around the world. It’s too early to say whether the record sea ice decline is the new normal or whether it will bounce back, and Antarctica is known for its significant swings. The NSIDC points out that: “While 2022 and 2023 have had record low minimum extent, four out of the five highest minimums have occurred since 2008.” “It’s going to take a while to unpack,” Scambos said. “We’re still reacting to a relatively sudden change. Certainly the last few years have been a dramatic exclamation point on a trend that was just developing after 2016.” Scientists will need at least another five years of data and observations, he estimated, but added: “It does feel like something has changed in the Antarctic and that things are fairly dramatic.” Correction: This story has been updated to correct the name of Christian Haas. Furthermore, the last two years are only times in the satellite era that sea ice extent has fallen below 2 million square kilometers.

By the end of the month, sea ice reached the second lowest extent in the satellite record. Meanwhile, Antarctic extent remained at record low levels. Combined, the two hemispheres set a record low for total global sea ice extent, yet this does not signify a trend necessarily and may be caused by weather-related variability.
Overview of conditions The January 2023 average Arctic sea ice extent was 13.35 million square kilometers (5.15 million square miles), the third lowest January in the satellite record (Figure 1a). January extent was 1.07 million square kilometers (413,000 square miles) below the 1981 to 2010 average of 14.42 million square kilometers (5.57 million square miles), but 270,000 square kilometers (104,000 square miles) above the record low set in January 2018. The daily rate of increase in extent was near average through the first half of the month, but slowed during the second half, and extent slightly declined near the end of the month (Figure 1b). Such short-term declines are not unusual in winter and typically reflect responses to weather patterns. Nevertheless, by the end of the month, the overall daily extent tracked at second lowest in the satellite data record. Overall, extent increased 1.09 million square kilometers (421,000 square miles) during January 2023, compared to the 1981 to 2010 average January increase of 1.33 million square kilometers (514,000 square miles). Regionally, extent remained particularly low in the Barents Sea, and below average extent was also found in the Sea of Okhotsk, the Bering Sea, and the Gulf of St. Lawrence. Conditions in context The sea level pressure pattern for January featured high pressure over the Pacific sector of the Arctic Ocean (Figure 2a). This feature is known as the Beaufort High and is common in winter and spring. The location of the high varies, but on average it is centered over the Beaufort Sea and drives the Beaufort Gyre, which brings ice from north of Greenland and the Canadian Arctic Archipelago through the Beaufort and into the Chukchi Sea. By contrast, over on the Atlantic side of the Arctic, low pressure dominated in the Barents Sea region. As a result, relatively warm air from the south moved into the Barents Sea region, leading to air temperatures at the 925 millibar level (approximately 2,500 feet above the surface) more than 6 degrees Celsius (11 degrees Fahrenheit) above average near Svalbard (Figure 2b). The lack of sea ice in the Barents Sea likely also contributed to above average air temperatures. Elsewhere, air temperatures were above average over most of the Arctic Ocean, with departures from average ranging from 1 degree Celsius (2 degrees Fahrenheit) to 5 degrees Celsius (9 degrees Fahrenheit).
percent per decade relative to the 1981 to 2010 average. Based on the linear trend, since 1979, January has lost 1.89 million square kilometers (730,000 square miles). This is equivalent to about seven times the size of Colorado or about twice the size of Germany.
Weather conditions around Antarctica have been characterized by stronger-than-average westerly winds (a positive Southern Annular Mode index) and a strong and eastward-positioned Amundsen Sea Low. Air temperatures at the 925 millibar level (about 2,500 feet above sea level) have been 1 to 2 degrees Celsius (2 to 4 degrees Fahrenheit) above average since November in a broad area of the coast stretching clockwise from the eastern Wilkes Land through the Ross and Amundsen Sea, and over most of the Weddell Sea. However, warm ocean waters just below the surface layer are also thought to be playing a role in the general downward trend of Antarctic sea ice since 2016 (Zhang et al., 2022). The January 2023 average Antarctic extent of 3.23 million square kilometers (1.25 million square miles) is the lowest January extent in the satellite record, below the previous January record low of 3.78 million square kilometers (1.46 million square miles) set in 2017. The downward linear trend in January sea ice extent is 6,400 square kilometers (2,500 square kilometers) per year or 1.3 percent per decade relative to the 1981 to 2010 average. Arctic freeze/thaw from above and below A key component in the seasonal and interannual evolution of Arctic sea ice is the timing of melt onset and freeze up. Surface melt and freeze up can be obtained from satellite passive microwave observations but satellite observations do not provide information about what is happening under the ice. The length of the melt season is much longer underneath sea ice as a result of ocean heat. A recent study evaluated data collected from sea ice mass balance buoys (IMBs) and upward looking sonar (ULS) instruments to gain insights on the seasonality of ice melt and freeze up below the ice. Over the period from 2001 to 2018, Lin and colleagues found that in the Beaufort Sea, the bottom melt onset began 17 days before the surface melt. By contrast, in the central Arctic the timing of the melt onset of the top and bottom of the ice was similar. The freeze up of the bottom of the ice began about three weeks after the surface started to freeze. The researchers also found that bottom melt onset occurred about a week earlier during the 2010 to 2018 period compared to the 2001 to 2009 period, because of rising ocean temperatures. Bottom freeze up began one to two weeks earlier in the later period compared to the earlier period because thinner ice allowed faster heat loss from the ocean. The Arctic sea ice is near a record low extent and area for its winter regrowth, and the Antarctic sea ice is at a record low by a long shot. It turns out that Atmospheric Rivers– ARs, which carry vast amounts of heat and moisture in thin ribbons of air stretching 1000s of km, are reaching the two polar regions and acting like garden hoses carrying near boiling water to etch out the sea ice, and even the on-land glacial ice. A new peer reviewed scientific paper on the Arctic was just published clearly showing that atmospheric rivers reaching deep into the Arctic in the winter (when the sea ice is reforming) are responsible for 34% of ice loss, meaning that when the summer melt starts to occur the ice is already extremely weak, thin, and fragile. In fact very little ice makes it from one year to the next. The exact same phenomena of ARs was responsible for the large quantities of rainfall that hit California in late December 2022 and January 2023. It seems like only a matter of time before a massive AR series of storms has catastrophic effects on California food production by flooding out large parts of the Central Valley region as happened in 1861-1862z. More frequent atmospheric rivers hinder seasonal recovery of Arctic sea ice FEBRUARY 6, 2023, By Matthew Carroll UNIVERSITY PARK, Pa. — The Arctic is rapidly losing sea ice, even during winter months when temperatures are below freezing and ice should be recovering from the summer melt. A new study found powerful storms called atmospheric rivers are increasingly reaching the Arctic in winter, slowing sea ice recovery and accounting for a third of all winter sea ice decline, according to a team led by Penn State scientists. “Arctic sea ice decline is among the most obvious evidence of global warming from the past several decades,” said Pengfei Zhang, assistant research professor of meteorology and atmospheric science at Penn State and lead author of the study. “Despite temperatures in the Arctic being well below freezing, sea ice decline in winter is still very significant. And our research shows atmospheric rivers are one factor in understanding why.” Atmospheric rivers carry large amounts of water vapor in narrow, ribbon-like storm systems that can stretch for a thousand miles and produce extreme rainfall and flooding when they make landfall. These storms regularly impact midlatitude coastal regions like California, where atmospheric river events in January, for example, dropped 11 inches of rain. Using satellite observations and climate model simulations, the scientists found these storms are increasingly reaching the Arctic — particularly the Barents and Kara seas off the northern coasts of Norway and Russia — during the winter ice-growing season. They reported their findings Monday, Feb. 6, in the journal Nature Climate Change. Ruby Leung, Battelle Fellow at Pacific Northwest National Laboratory, and a co-author. “This study is important in that it finds sea ice decline is due to episodic extreme weather events — atmospheric rivers, which have occurred more frequently in recent decades partly due to global warming.” Warm moisture carried by these storms increases downward longwave radiation, or heat emitted back to Earth from the atmosphere, and produces rain, both of which can melt the thin, fragile ice cover regrowing during the winter months. Using satellite remote sensing images, the scientists observed sea ice retreat almost immediately following atmospheric river storms and saw the retreat persisted for up to 10 days. Because of this melting and because the storms are becoming more common, atmospheric rivers are slowing down seasonal sea-ice recovery in the Arctic, the scientists said. “When this kind of moisture transport happens in the Arctic, the effect is not only the amount of rain or snow that falls from it, but also the powerful melting effect on the ice,” said Mingfang Ting, a professor at Lamont-Doherty Earth Observatory, Columbia University and a co-author. “This is important since we are losing Arctic sea ice fast in the past few decades that brought many unwanted consequences such as Arctic warming, erosion of Arctic coastlines, disturbance to global weather patterns and disruption to the Arctic communities and ecosystems.” The loss of Arctic sea ice has broad implications, the scientists said. Open waters may enable new, more direct shipping routes but also trigger geopolitical concerns between countries. Additionally, freshwater melting into the salty ocean may impact oceanic circulations patterns that stabilize global temperatures. “Those factors make this study especially important from a science perspective, but also from social and security perspectives, said Laifang Li, assistant professor of meteorology and atmospheric science at Penn State and a co-author. “Sea ice melting has a big impact for the climate system and for society, and our study finds the Arctic is an open system and that climate change is way more complicated than temperature change alone can explain.” Using large-ensemble climate models, the scientists determined that human-induced warming has increased the rate of atmospheric river storms in the Arctic. But they also found that one major mode of natural climate variabilities — the so-called Interdecadal Pacific Oscillation — also contribute to atmospheric river changes. “This study, together with other work that noted the presence of atmospheric rivers in the tropics, highlights that atmospheric rivers represent a global phenomenon,” said Bin Guan, Earth systems scientist at the University of California, Los Angeles and Jet Propulsion Laboratory, California Institute of Technology. “Since they were discovered relatively recently — in the 1990s, and even more recently in terms of recognizing their societal impacts — atmospheric rivers provide an opportunity for potentially coordinated research and applications globally, that is, with today’s computational and technological capabilities.” Also contributing to this research was Gang Chen, professor at the University of California, Los Angeles. India records over thousand forest fires in one week With temperatures soaring above normal, India witnessed a whopping 1,156 forest fires during last week, pulling down the air quality index significantly. As many as 12 Indian states had significant forest fire incidents so far (see map). According to NASA’s Fire Information for Resource Management System, the spatial resolution of the Visible Infrared Imaging Radiometer Suite satellite shows forest fire incidents across India, with high concentration in parts of South India, Odisha and the Northeast. Chances of fires originating from burning farm residue are remote since the rabi harvesting season is yet to start.  “If you superimpose NASA’s images with that of the air quality index, you will can easily correlate the forest fires with the poor air quality,” says Chandra Bhushan, a Delhi-based environmentalist. According to Swiss firm IQAir, air quality in India at 9 pm on Tuesday fell into the severe to unhealthy category in cities like Delhi, Gandhinagar, Kolkata, Mumbai, Hosur and Mullanpur (see table).

 This means that a huge amount of heat that was previously reflected back into space by the sea ice is now instead absorbed by the Southern Ocean, in a self-reinforcing feedback loop that results in further sea ice loss, in turn further speeding up the temperature rise and making the weather ever more extreme.  Arctic sea ice extent was 14,271,000 km² on February 19, 2023, the third-lowest extent in the NSIDC record for the time of year, as illustrated by the above image.  Global sea ice extent reached a record low of 15,500,000 km² on February 11, 2023, as illustrated by the above image. The situation is dire The dire situation is further illustrated by the image below, showing high sea surface temperature anomalies (from 1981-2011) over the Southern Ocean, the Atlantic ocean and the Arctic Ocean on February 19, 2023.  Given the dire situation regarding sea ice and sea surface temperatures, Arctic sea ice may fall dramatically later in the year. Furthermore, emissions, ocean heat and greenhouse gas levels all keep rising. Keep in mind that carbon dioxide reaches its maximum warming some 10 years after emission, so we haven't been hit by the full wrath of carbon dioxide pollution yet. Accordingly, the temperatures keep rising. An earlier analysis concludes that we have already exceeded the 2°C threshold set at the Paris Agreement in 2015. These dire conditions spell bad news regarding the temperature rise to come, the more so since, on top of these dire conditions, there are a number of circumstances, feedbacks and further developments that make the outlook even more dire. Circumstances that make the situation even more dire
Moving from the bottom of a La Niña to the peak of a strong El Niño could make a difference of more than half a degree Celsius, as illustrated by the image below, adapted from NOAA.  Temperature anomalies can be very high during an El Niño. The February 2016 temperature on land-only was 2.96°C above 1880-1920, and in February 2020, it was 2.79°C higher, as illustrated by the image below, created with screenshots taken on February 15, 2023. Note that 1880-1920 isn't pre-industrial. 
Since water vapor is a potent greenhouse gas, this is further contributing to speed up the temperature rise. A 2023 study calculates that the submarine volcano eruption near Tonga in January 2022, as also discussed at facebook, will have a warming effect of 0.12 Watts/m² over the next few years. The image below, created with NOAA data, shows Annual Northern Hemisphere Land Temperature Anomalies and has two trends added. The blue trend, based on 1850-2022 data, points at 3°C rise by 2032. The pink trend, based on 2012-2022 data, better reflects variables such as El Niño and sunspots, showing that this could trigger a huge rise, with 3°C crossed in 2024. Anomalies are from 1901-2000 (not from pre-industrial).  Feedbacks and developments making things worse Indeed, a huge temperature rise could be triggered, due to a multitude of feedbacks and further developments that could strongly deteriorate the situation even further. On top of the water vapor added by the Tonga eruption, there are several feedbacks causing more water vapor to get added to the atmosphere, as discussed at Moistening Atmosphere. Further feedbacks include additional greenhouse gas releases such as methane from the seafloor of the Arctic Ocean and methane, carbon dioxide and nitrous oxide from rapidly thawing permafrost on land. Ominously, November 2023 temperature anomalies are forecast to be at the top end of the scale for a large part of the Arctic Ocean, as illustrated by the tropicaltidbits.com image below.  Some developments could make things even worse. As discussed in earlier posts such as this oneand this one, the upcoming temperature rise on land on the Northern Hemisphere could be so high that it will cause much traffic, transport and industrial activity to grind to a halt, resulting in a reduction in cooling aerosols that are currently masking the full wrath of global warming. Falling away of this aerosol masking effect could cause a huge temperature rise, while there could be an additional temperature rise due to an increase in warming aerosols and gases as a result of more biomass and waste burning and forest fires. A huge temperature rise could therefore unfold soon, causing the clouds tipping point to be crossed that on its own could result in further rise of 8°C. Meanwhile, humans are likely to go extinct with a rise of 3°C, as illustrated by the image below, from an analysis discussed in an earlier post.  This should act as a warning that near-term human extinction could occur sooner than most may think. Indeed, when asked what could cause humans to go extinct, many may mention: 1. asteroid strikes 2. rampant pestilence, diseases, epidemics and pandemics 3. war, murder and violence 4. ecosystems and vegetation collapse, famine 5. dehydration 6. plastic pollution, spread of poisonous and toxic substances 7. nuclear accidents, nuclear war or waste leakage 8. outbreaks of antibiotic-resistant bacteria 9. emerging new or re-emerging ancient microbes 10. bio-weapons and biological experiments gone out of hand 11. infertility, genetic degeneration, loss of genetic diversity 12. madness, cults, depression and suicide 13. polar shifts, earthquakes, landslides and tsunamis 14. Artificial Intelligence gone rogue 15. hostile aliens breeding predatory animals More recently, climate change threats are mentioned such as: 16. destructive storms, flooding, fires and more extreme weather 17. hydrogen sulfide gas released from oceans 18. depletion of the ozone layer 19. co-extinctions, i.e. extinction of species that humans depend on, resulting in our own demise.
