A record melt event in mid-June

July 1, 2019 Between June 11 and 20, an extensive area of the Greenland ice sheet surface melted. At its peak on June 12, thawing climbed from the western and eastern coasts to elevations above 3,000 meters (9,800 feet). High air pressure and clockwise circulation around the island brought warm air from the south and sunny conditions. While several recent years have had similar early widespread melt events, the event of June 11 to 20 reached a peak of just over 700,000 square kilometers (270,000 square miles), setting a record for this early in the melt season. Models estimate the amount of melted ice at approximately 80 billion tons for that period.

Greenland Is Melting Away Before Our Eyes

Amid an ongoing heat wave, new data show the Greenland ice sheet is in the middle of its biggest melt season in recorded history. It’s the latest worrying signal climate change is accelerating far beyond the worst fears of even climate scientists.

The record-setting heat wave that sweltered northern Europe last week has moved north over the critically vulnerable Greenland ice sheet, triggering temperatures this week that are as much as 25 to 30 degrees Fahrenheit warmer than normal. (NOTE: Recent media states 20 C - or 68 F - YES - 68 F - above normal NOW!)

Weather models indicate Tuesday’s temperature may have surpassed 75 degrees Fahrenheit in some regions of Greenland, and a weather balloon launched near the capital Nuuk measured all-time record warmth just above the surface. That heat wave is still intensifying, and is expected to peak on Thursday with the biggest single-day melt ever recorded in Greenland. On August 1 alone, more than 12 billion tons of water will permanently melt away from the ice sheet and find its way down to the ocean, irreversibly raising sea levels globally.

The last MAR forecast suggests that the ablation rate (not melt extent) of 01-AUG (SMB ~ - 12.5GT/day) could be the highest in the Greenland history from 1950, breaking the previous July 2012 record! Such daily SMB rate corresponds to what MAR projects for 2070 using SSP585. [Translated - the ablation rate is what is forecasted for 2070! NOT TODAY!]

A tweet from the Danish Meteorological Institute, the official weather service of Greenland, said “almost all the ice sheet, including Summit” measurably melted on Tuesday. According to a preliminary estimate, that melt covered 87 percent of the ice sheet’s surface, which would be the second-biggest melt day in Greenland’s recorded history. Separate weather monitoring equipment at Summit Camp at the top of the 10,000-foot-thick Greenland ice sheet confirmed the temperature briefly reached the melting point.

Downhill, meltwater was seen dramatically streaming off the edge of the ice sheet in massive waterfalls. Climate scientist Irina Overeem, who placed a meltwater monitoring station in western Greenland eight years ago, recorded a dramatic video of a rushing torrent of water. In a comment posted on Twitter, she said “I have my fingers crossed for it not being washed away.” In an email to Rolling Stone, Overeem described the nature of life in Greenland these days: After recording that video, she spotted a warning of the major glacial water runoff on the announcement board of the main supermarket in the capital city. A similar glacial flood in 2012 was so intense it washed away bridge.

Ice core records show melt days like these have happened only a handful of times in the past 1,000 years. But, with the advent of human-caused climate change, the chances of these full-scale melt events happening are sharply increasing.

Even just a few decades ago, an event like this would have been unthinkable. Now, island-wide meltdown days like this are becoming increasingly routine. The ongoing melt event is the second time in seven years that virtually the entire ice sheet simultaneously experienced at least some melt. The last was in July 2012, where 97 percent of the ice sheet simultaneously melted.

In the 1980s, wintertime snows in Greenland roughly balanced summertime melt from the ice sheet, and the conventional wisdom among scientists was that it might take thousands of years for the ice to completely melt under pressure from global warming.

That’s all changed now.

With a decade or two of hindsight, scientists now believe Greenland passed an important tipping point around 2003, and since then its melt rate has more than quadrupled.

This week alone, Greenland will lose about 50 billion tons of ice, enough for a permanent rise in global sea levels by about 0.1mm. So far in July, the Greenland ice sheet has lost 160 billion tons of ice — enough to cover Florida in about six feet of water. According to IPCC estimates (BS FOR THE BILLIONAIRES ESTIMATES, The IPCC and Most "Climate Scientist" DO NOT FACTOR IN SIBERIAN METHANE RELEASE INTO THEIR MODELING! SAY WHAT! "BS FOR THE BILLIONAIRES!"), that’s roughly the level of melt a typical summer will have in 2050 under the worst-case warming scenario if we don’t take meaningful action to address climate change (SEE HOW INACCURATE BS FOR THE BILLIONAIRES IS - IPCC - FAU LIBERALS - WAKE UP!). Under that same scenario, this week’s brutal, deadly heat wave would be normal weather in the 2070s (TRY BY 2025-2030).

Xavier Fettweis, a polar scientist at the University of Liège in Belgium who tracks meltwater on the Greenland ice sheet, told Rolling Stone in an email that the recent acceleration of these melt events means the IPCC scenarios “clearly underestimate what we currently observe over the Greenland ice sheet” and should revisit their projections for the future.

“This melt event is a good alarm signal that we urgently need change our way of
living,” said Fettweis. “It is more and more likely that the IPCC projections are too optimistic in the Arctic.” Altogether, the Greenland ice sheet contains enough ice to raise global sea levels by about 24 feet.

‘Ecological disaster’: Russia battles Siberia wildfires

The Russian military has joined efforts to battle unprecedented wildfires engulfing vast tracts of Siberia. Not only is the acrid smoke from the fires posing a health hazard for local residents, but environmental groups have warned the blazes could accelerate global warming.

The fires cover more than 30,000 square kilometers, an area the size of Belgium, and are concentrated mainly in the vast regions of Yakutia in the north and Krasnoyarsk and Irkutsk in the east.

Though wildfires are common in Siberia in the summer months, this year’s blazes have reached an unprecedented size, triggered by unusually warm temperatures and spread by strong winds.

While the fires themselves release vast quantities of CO2 into the air, the dark soot and ash they produce can cover ice and snow and stop them reflecting heat, increasing the risk the permafrost layer could thaw and release methane – a greenhouse gas – into the atmosphere.

"The forest fires…have long stopped being a local problem," the Russian branch of Greenpeace said in a statement. "It has transformed into an ecological disaster.”

What do Alaska Wildfires Mean for Global Climate Change?

During the (on-going) 2019 fire season, over 2 million acres have burned – an area roughly equivalent to that of Yellowstone National Park. In comparison to many fires in the conterminous United States, many fires in Alaska burn far away from population centers, and as such can be fought and responded to differently. However, to put the alarming nature of this season in context, the 2019 fire season in Alaska has already burned greater acreage than ALL fires in California during 2018 (~1.8 million acres), the year of the devastating Camp, Woolsey, and Carr fires. We can see in the figure below that 2019 is slated to burn far more acreage than an average Alaskan season and may be on a trajectory to surpass 3 million acres burned.

Alaska’s ecosystems are already some of the most vulnerable to climate change, with temperatures rising at a rate that’s twice the global average. Across the state, record breaking heat and drought have dried out Alaska’s ecosystems, priming them to burn.
While these fires pose risks to human life and infrastructure, they also exacerbate climate warming by releasing millions of tons of heat-trapping gases into the atmosphere as Alaska’s vegetation and carbon rich soils burn, meaning that the impact of this year’s fires could reverberate for generations.

And when it comes to the quantity of these gases, Alaskan fires aren’t messing around.

In 2019, fires in the state have released roughly three times what Alaska emits annually from burning fossil fuels (Fires release ~99 Million Metric Tons of CO2), and 40% more than all 2018 fires in California (68 Million Metric Tons of CO2). In the 3 largest fire years on record (2004, 2005, and 2015), fires released approximately 8 times more.

To avoid devastating impacts of climate change, we must reduce emissions from all sectors, including protecting carbon that is already sequestered. While these fires and emissions present an unchecked liability when it comes to combating continued climate warming, they also may present an unusual opportunity – where we can fight climate change with a technique (fire management) that we already can implement successfully.  Although fire management is often ignored as a viable climate mitigation strategy, the increasingly large fires this season in Alaska suggest that we ought to reconsider and view management of Alaskan fires as critical intervention opportunity.
