The Anthrome map shows croplands, rangelands, urban areas and other human settlements. UNDERSTANDING CARRYING CAPACITY Human population, now nearing 8 billion, cannot continue to grow indefinitely. There are limits to the life-sustaining resources earth can provide us. In other words, there is a carrying capacity for human life on our planet. Carrying capacity is the maximum number of a species an environment can support indefinitely. Every species has a carrying capacity, even humans. However, it is very difficult for ecologists to calculate human carrying capacity. Humans are a complex species. We do not reproduce, consume resources, and interact with our living environment uniformly. Carrying capacity estimates involve making predictions about future trends in demography, resource availability, technological advances and economic development. OUR ECOLOGICAL FOOTPRINT One way to address the challenges associated with making future projections is to look at current human impact on the planet. The ecological footprint is a measurement of the anthropogenic impact on earth. It tracks how much biocapacity (biological capacity) there is and how much biocapacity people use by comparing the rate at which we consume natural resources and generate waste to the planet’s ability to replenish those resources and absorb waste. Today, our global footprint is in overshoot. It would take 1.75 Earths to sustain our current population. If current trends continue, we will reach 3 Earths by the year 2050. WHERE DO WE GROW FROM HERE? Our planet does not have the biocapacity to sustain our current levels of growth and resource consumption. So, what can be done to minimize our collective impact on the environment? In his book, How Many People Can the Earth Support?, mathematical biologist Joel Cohen classifies current solutions into three paradigms: those looking for a “bigger pie” (improving technology), those advocating for “fewer forks” (slowing population growth), and those looking to rationalize and improve decision-making though “better manners” (changing global culture). Cohen argues that, standing along, each paradigm is necessary in solving our environmental crisis, but not sufficient. Change must come from a combination of all three. “Promoting access to contraceptives, developing economies, saving children, empowering women, educating men, and doing it all at once,” he writes, is a way to both lower our impact on the planet and improve the quality of life for all. Perhaps Oxford economist Robert Cassen said it best, “Virtually everything that needs doing from a population perspective needs doing anyway.” Adopting human-centered initiatives targeted at addressing both population growth and consumption habits, ranging from the individual to trans-national level, are our best hope for achieving a sustainable future.

 THE PLANETARY BOUNDARIES MODEL The planetary boundaries concept presents a set of nine planetary boundaries within which humanity can continue to develop and thrive for generations to comeIn September 2023, a team of scientists quantified, for the first time, all nine processes that regulate the stability and resilience of the Earth system. These nine Planetary Boundaries were first proposed by former centre director Johan Rockström and a group of 28 internationally renowned scientists in 2009. The Planetary Boundaries are the safe limits for human pressure on the nine critical processes which together maintain a stable and resilient Earth. The 2023 update not only quantified all boundaries, it also concluded that six of the nine boundaries have been transgressed. Crossing boundaries increases the risk of generating large-scale abrupt or irreversible environmental changes. Drastic changes will not necessarily happen overnight, but together the boundaries mark a critical threshold for increasing risks to people and the ecosystems we are part of. Planetary Boundaries are interdependent, meaning that if we cross one Boundary, we will affect others, or even cause them to cross out of the safe operating space. Boundaries are interrelated processes within the complex biophysical Earth system. We cannot consider Planetary Boundaries in isolation in any decision making on sustainability. Only by respecting all nine boundaries can we maintain the safe operating space for human civilization. Over the years, the planetary boundaries framework has generated enormous interest within science, policy, and practice. The nine planetary boundaries and their status Climate change: The change in the ratio of incoming and outgoing energy of the Earth, caused by increased greenhouse gasses and aerosols. More trapped radiation causes an increase in global temperatures and alters climate patterns. This boundary is transgresseed. Novel entities: The introduction of novel entities includes synthetic chemicals and substances (e.g. microplastics, endocrine disruptors, organic pollutants), anthropogenically mobilized radioactive materials (e.g. nuclear waste, nuclear weapons), and human interventions in evolutionary processes, such as genetically modified organisms (GMOs) and other direct modifications of evolution. Currently, the amount of synthetic substances released into the environment without adequate testing is above the safe level. Stratospheric ozone depletion: The stratospheric ozone layer protects life on Earth from harmful ultraviolet radiation. The thinning of the ozone layer in the upper atmosphere, primarily due to human-made chemicals, allows more harmful UV radiation to reach Earth's surface. The current total amount of stratospheric ozone is within safe levels, and recovery is ongoing, with values still below mid-20th century levels. Atmospheric aerosol loading: The rise in airborne particles from human activities or natural sources influences the climate by altering temperature and precipitation patterns. Currently, the interhemispheric difference in atmospheric aerosol loading is within the Safe Operating Space. Ocean acidification: Ocean acidification is the phenomenon of increasing acidity (decreasing pH) in ocean water due to the absorption of atmospheric CO2. This process harms calcifying organisms, impacting marine ecosystems, and reduces the ocean's efficiency in acting as a carbon sink. The indicator for Ocean Acidification, the current aragonite saturation state, is within the Safe Operating Space but is close to crossing the safe boundary. Modification of biogeochemical flows: The disruption of the natural nutrient cycles of key elements like nitrogen, and phosphorus through the environment and organisms, which are crucial for supporting life and maintaining ecosystems. Both the global phosphorus flow into the ocean and the industrial fixation of nitrogen (extracting nitrogen from the atmosphere), are disrupting the corresponding nutrient cycles beyond the safe level. Freshwater change: The alteration of freshwater cycles, including rivers and soil moisture, impacts natural functions such as carbon sequestration and biodiversity, and can lead to shifts in precipitation levels. Human-induced disturbances of both blue water (e.g. rivers and lakes) and green water (i.e. soil moisture) have exceeded the safe level. Land system change: The transformation of natural landscapes, such as through deforestation and urbanization, diminishes ecological functions like carbon sequestration, moisture recycling, and habitats for wildlife, all crucial for Earth system health. Globally, the remaining forest areas in all three biomes (tropical, boreal, and temperate) have fallen below the safe levels. Biosphere integrity: The decline in the diversity, extent, and health of living organisms and ecosystems, threatens the biosphere’s ability to co-regulate the state of the planet by impacting the energy balance and chemical cycles on Earth. Both the loss of genetic diversity, and the decline in the functional integrity of the biosphere, have exceeded their safe levels. Key publications 2023 All boundaries are finally assessed in the third major update to the framework which is published in Science Advances. Six boundaries are now transgressed and pressure is increasing on all boundary processes except ozone depletion. New scientific evidence now enabled the team to quantify the boundary of Atmospheric Aerosol Loading, which according to the study is not transgressed yet despite rising pressures. The team behind this paper used a new approach to assess Biosphere integrity and concluded that this boundary was transgressed during the late 19th century. Read "Earth beyond six of nine Planetary Boundaries" here » 2022 In January 2022, 14 scientists concluded in the scientific journal Environmental Science and Technology that humanity has exceeded a planetary boundary related to environmental pollutants and other “novel entities” including plastics. In April 2022, a reassessment of the planetary boundary for freshwater indicated that it has now been transgressed. This conclusion is due to the inclusion of “green water” – the water available to plants - into the boundary assessment for the first time. The assessment, published in the journal Nature Reviews Earth & Environment, is based on evidence of widespread changes in soil moisture relative to mid-Holocene and pre-industrial conditions and green-water driven destabilization of ecological, atmospheric, and biogeochemical processes. 2017 Since 2017, Johan Rockström’s ERC Advanced Grant Earth Resilience in the Anthropocene funded a new phase in this work. Centre researchers including Sarah Cornell, Tiina Häyhä, Ingo Fetzer, Steve Lade, Andrea Downing, Jonathan Donges, and Avit Bhowmik have all been actively involved in advancing these frontier areas, and building collaborative research links among a growing international community of scientists. 2015 The second update of the whole framework was published in Science. It stated that society’s activities have pushed climate change, biodiversity loss, shifts in nutrient cycles (nitrogen and phosphorus), and land use beyond the boundaries into unprecedented territory.  Earth Overshoot Day 2024 falls on August 1st Ending Overshoot: Humanity’s Critical Race GENEVA, SWITZERLAND — August 1st marks Earth Overshoot Day, the date when humanity’s demand on nature’s resources surpasses Earth’s capacity to regenerate them for the given year. This day is calculated by Global Footprint Network, the international sustainability organization that pioneered the Ecological Footprint. Earth Overshoot Day falling on August 1st signifies that humanity is currently using nature 1.7 times faster than our planet’s ecosystems can regenerate. This overshoot is possible because people can harvest more than is being renewed, thereby depleting natural capital. Such overuse compromises resource security. The consequences of ecological overspending are evident in deforestation, soil erosion, biodiversity loss, and the buildup of carbon dioxide in the atmosphere, which leads to more frequent extreme weather events and reduced food production. Although Earth Overshoot Day has held steady for a decade, it remains early in the year, occurring just after 7 months of the year have passed. The remainder of the year humanity lives from overuse, further depleting the biosphere. Therefore, even as the date holds steady, the pressure on the planet keeps increasing, since damage from overshoot accumulates over time.  Lewis Akenji, Global Footprint Network board member, states: “Overshoot will end. The question is how: by design or by disaster. A planned transition gives us better security than ceding to the whims of a planet thrown off balance by overshoot.” Just as athletes achieving breakthroughs through focus, innovation, and effort, humanity needs to do the same if it wants to succeed in ending overshoot by design. In 1968, Dick Fosbury revolutionized the high jump at the Mexico Olympics, at a time when humanity used just just 0.9 Earths. By 1988, when Olympian sailor Lawrence Lemieux stopped mid-race to rescue two capsized competitors, humanity’s demand on nature had jumped to 1.3 Earths. In 2008, as Usain Bolt broke his first Olympic records, it had grown to 1.6 Earths. Can we summon the same determination to reverse our ecological overshoot? “Ending overshoot is essential. It is also possible, given human potential,” comments Debora Barioni of Global Footprint Network. Solutions that #MoveTheDate are available and financially advantageous. Opportunities exist in five key areas: Cities, Energy, Food, Population, and Planet. The Power of Possibility highlights options that move Earth Overshoot Day. Researchers make the case for shift from economic growth to human well-being within planetary limits JOHN CANNON 4 FEB 2025 GLOBALPLANETARY BOUNDARIES
For more than a century, nations have measured societal gains in terms of economic growth. But a new review published in the journal Lancet Planetary Health in January 2025 questions that convention. It concludes that humanity would benefit more if it aims for ecological sustainability and stays within the limits of what Earth can provide, rather than pursuing relentless growth. Capitalism as practiced today relies on the boundless expansion of economies, measured annually by changes in a country’s gross domestic product, or GDP, over time. But across history, that drive to create well-being by manufacturing more goods and services has consumed vast amounts of Earth’s resources and energy. But what if those resources begin to run out? Or, more pressingly, what happens when resource extraction and making all that energy threatens the ecosystems at the very foundation of life on Earth? Addressing the limits to growth For more than 50 years, researchers have wrestled with these thorny questions and searched for alternative economic approaches to ensure human well-being and survival. That quest was triggered mainly by a seminal book titled The Limits to Growth. Published in 1972, it posited that Earth’s resources are finite, with the authors also attempting to estimate when overconsumption might bring resource overshoot and societal collapse. The debate over Earth’s carrying capacity and limits continues today and is addressed in the new review. More than ever, analysts worry that our overriding drive for economic growth is shaping our planet in ways detrimental to human health and well-being, as people struggle to maintain quality of life in the face of rising temperatures, drought and floods, wildfires, rising seas, diminishing biodiversity, deforestation, and ecosystem degradation. In 2009, scientists tried to get a handle on precisely how human activities are impacting nine Earth systems vital to supporting life. The result was the planetary boundaries framework, which attempts to define the safe operating space for humanity, while also measuring the degree to which people and technology destabilize these Earth systems. As of 2023, scientists found six of the nine boundaries had been transgressed and in the danger zone, including climate change, loss of biological integrity, and land-use change. “We know we’re crossing [the boundaries],” said Giorgos Kallis, an ecological economist and professor at Spain’s Autonomous University of Barcelona and the lead author of the Lancet Planetary Health study. “But the question is, what can we do differently?” The quest for alternative sustainable economic models The planetary boundaries framework and the threat of overshoot have spurred economists to develop alternative economic systems, including Doughnut Economics, which aims to define the safe, equitable space in which humanity can operate — existing between an inner circle defined as the “social foundation” which delineates people’s essential requirements for food, water and other necessities, and an outer “ecological ceiling” comprising the limits defined by the nine planetary boundaries. Economist Kate Raworth first conceived of Doughnut Economics in 2012. Raworth joined Kallis as a co-author on the new review, which examines the world through the lens of the planetary boundaries to see how their transgression impacts human well-being. In the process, the researchers surveyed a range of economic disciplines along with more than 200 studies, analyses and modeling exercises that explored alternative approaches to ensure that both humanity and the environment persist and thrive in what they call a “post-growth” period. The result is “one of the most comprehensive overviews” encompassing a wide spectrum of post-growth research, said Bram Büscher, a professor of sociology at Wageningen University in the Netherlands who was not involved in the review. Büscher also praised the new research for incorporating alternative economic concepts related to planetary boundaries. But figuring out “how to operationalize” these theories, he said, “becomes absolutely critical.” The researchers say a key to continued human well-being is decoupling economic growth from environmental damage. Some countries, including Denmark, Finland and Sweden, have made strides in this direction — maintaining robust national economies, while embracing circular economy concepts to reduce resource consumption, reuse, recycle and be more sustainable. Related to decoupling is the idea of green growth, which holds that investments in sustainable energy and clean production of goods and services will boost countries’ bottom lines. But the authors warn that even green growth can’t be infinite. “What the economy is doing is transforming matter into goods and services,” Kallis told Mongabay, and that transformation requires energy. “If you have economic growth, you’re going to use more matter, and you’re going to use more energy.” Kallis and his colleagues looked closely at societal changes that could ease the transition to a post-growth economy. Countries could, for example, invest in social safety nets that provide basic income, job guarantees and health care. The team also considered “alternative infrastructures of housing, food [and] energy supply. What would they look like in a scenario of more downscaled resource and energy use?” The researchers suggest that taxes on wealth and carbon emissions could be plowed into these basic supports for human well-being. However, fully funding such services remains a knotty problem for a post-growth future, according to Büscher. “How do you pay for this kind of stuff if you don’t have growth?” he asked. “This is a key issue in many policy discussions on both the left and the right in political debates.”  The Doughnut Economics Model tries to define the safe, equitable space in which humanity can operate. Every day, the growth-driven demand for resources, goods and energy, especially in the Global North, continues unabated. And that consumption worsens deforestation, ecosystem degradation and the conversion of wild areas to agricultural lands, particularly in the Global South. “Countries of the Global South have to separate themselves from dependence on global trade and exports to the Global North, and they have to try to recirculate a much greater share of their own labor and natural resources for their own industrial development,” Kallis said. The current system is “not a fair deal, because [the Global South is being] drained of very unequal amounts of human labor, energy and natural resources.” A post-growth future in which Global North countries rein in consumption could reduce ecosystem pressures on less industrialized nations. However, the authors also caution that Global South countries must invest in their own supportive infrastructure for human well-being — infrastructure that’s not harmful to the environment. Kallis acknowledged that the global shift to post-growth will require political will that’s hard to find right now. “We see that the trends are moving very much in the other direction, so it’s not just a matter of doing the analysis,” Kallis said. Reframing the debate to include Doughnut Economics and other alternative economic models will have little value if the fixation with growth continues. Global politics remain a huge sticking point. In the U.S., for example, newly sworn-in President Donald Trump is already using executive orders to ax government programs for renewable energy, automobile efficiency standards and electric vehicle buyer incentives. Meanwhile, virtually no nation on Earth is meeting its carbon emissions reduction target set by the 2015 Paris climate agreement, which the U.S. will leave in early 2026 due to another Trump order. Environmentalists and economists now frequently find themselves unable to press forward with green initiatives.
