​RUSSIA: TRUMP & HIS TEAM’S TIES

Despite Russia's harmful national interests against the U.S., and its human rights violations around the world, President Trump and his team are directly and indirectly tied to Russia.

Throughout the 2016 presidential election, President Trump not only refused to criticize Russian President Vladimir Putin, but was even friendly and accommodating in his remarks. In his own words, President Trump called President Putin "highly respected."

​More recently, President Trump put the U.S. on equal moral footing with Russia when responding to Bill O'Reilly's question about Putin being a "killer," saying "We've got a lot of killers... you think our country's so innocent?" This is absolutely false moral equivalence, and unheard of for the President of the United States to insult and demean the country he leads.

President Trump has harshly criticized NATO, and exclaimed that only the NATO allies that paid equally to the alliance deserved protection from the United States. Though these remarks were softened by British Prime Minister Theresa May, who claims that President Trump fully supports the North Atlantic Treaty Organization (NATO), it's still unclear how supportive he will be of NATO allies like the Baltic states in light of his relationship with Russia.

President Trump has also surrounded himself with people who do business with and are sympathetic to Russia. The New York Times reported that members of Trump's 2016 campaign and other Trump associates had frequent contact with senior Russian intelligence officials throughout the campaign. In addition to these questionable communications, here are a few other associates with ties to Moscow:

Donald Trump: Not only does his past and current team have ties to Russia, but the President himself also does. He has traveled to Russia extensively, done business there often, and has ties to Russian interests. For example, in 2008 he made a real estate sale to Russian billionaire, Dmitry Rybolovlev. Trump boughta Palm Beach mansion in 2004 during a bankruptcy sale for $41 million, and less than four years later, without ever having moved in, Trump sold the mansion to Rybolovlev for $95 million. In a May 2017 meeting in the Oval Office, he revealed highly classified information to the Russian ambassador Sergey Kislyak and foreign minister Sergei Lavrov. US media was banned from this meeting, but a Russian photographer was allowed in the session, later releasing these photos on the Russian state-owned news.

• Michael Flynn: Flynn, President Trump's former National Security Advisor, was asked to resign just weeks after he was sworn in. His resignation came after it leaked that he misled Vice President Mike Pence about his communications with Russian officials, specifically Russian Ambassador to the U.S. Sergey Kislyak, before President Trump's inauguration. In these communications, Flynn discussed sanctions imposed by the Obama administration on Russia – while President Obama was still in office. Earlier last year, he stated that the U.S. needs to respect that "Russia has its own national security strategy, and we have to try to figure out: How do we combine the United States' national security strategy along with Russia's national security strategy," raising troubling questions. In 2015, Flynn delivered remarks at a Moscow gala honoring RT, Russia's propaganda arm, where he was seated next to Putin. Flynn accepted $33,750 for this speech by RT, and did not correctly report the payment, thus concealing payment from a foreign government, and possibly violating the law in the meantime. Flynn continued to appear on RT as a foreign policy analyst. Altogether, Flynn was paid more than $67,000 by Russian companies before the 2016 presidential election.
• Jeff Sessions: Sessions, President Trump's Attorney General, had two conversations with Ambassador Kislyak during the 2016 presidential election. However, during later confirmation hearings, he claimed that he "did not have communications with the Russians" when prompted by Senator Al Franken. Once reports of his meetings with Kislyak surfaced, Sessions recused himself from any investigation into Russia's interference in our 2016 presidential election. Many officials are continuing to call for his resignation.

• Rex Tillerson: Tillerson, President Trump's former Secretary of State, worked on energy projects in Russia for two decades during his career at Exxon. He has publicly described his "very close relationship" with President Putin and was awarded Russia's Order of Friendship in 2013, the highest state honor possible for a foreigner.
• Jared Kushner: Kushner is President Trump's son-in-law and current Senior Advisor. Along with Michael Flynn, Kushner met with Ambassador Kislyak during the Presidential transition. The White House later acknowledged that following that meeting, Ambassador Kislyak requested a second meeting, which Kushner had a deputy attend. However, at Kislyak's request, Kushner did later meet with Sergey Gorkov, the head of Russia's state-owned development bank, who has close ties to President Putin. The U.S. placed this bank on its sanctions list following Russia's annexation of Crimea. The Senate Intelligence Committee plans to question Kushner about his meetings with Russian officials. The New York Times recently reported that Kusher failed to disclose dozens of contacts with foreign leaders on his application for top-secret security clearance -- one of those contacts being Ambassador Kislyak.
• Donald Trump, Jr.: Trump, Jr., President Trump's son, met with Fabien Baussart, a leader of a Syrian opposition group backed by the Russian government, and others about how the U.S. could work with Russia on the Syrian conflict weeks before Donald Trump was elected President. He has also been quoted saying that his father's businesses "see a lot of money pouring in from Russia", and that he had visited Russia on business over a half-dozen times. In June 2016, he met with a Russian billionaire, Emin Agalarov, under the premise that Emin had "official documents and information that would incriminate Hillary and her dealings with Russia" from the Crown prosecutor of Russia, and that this was part of "Russia and its government's support for Mr. Trump."
• Paul Manafort: Manafort, who has business connections to Russia and Ukraine, was hired as Trump's campaign manager in March 2016. He then resigned in August of the same year, after reports surfaced that suggested he had received $12.7 million from Victor Yanukovych, Ukraine's pro-Russia former president. It was recently revealed by AP that Manafort proposed in a strategy plan from as early as June 2005 that he would work to influence politics, business deals, and media inside the U.S. and Europe to benefit Putin. This plan was pitched to Oleg Deripaska, a "Russian aluminum magnate" with close ties to Putin. Manafort eventually signed a $10 million contract with Deripaska in early 2006. The Trump Administration and Manafort have both said that Manafort never worked for Russian interests. Since the FBI confirmed in a House Permanent Select Committee on Intelligence hearing on March 20 that investigators are examining whether the Trump campaign and its associates coordinated with Russia to interfere in the 2016 election, the White House has made attempts to distance itself from Manafort, claiming that he played "a very limited role" in the campaign, despite his clear leadership role as campaign chairman leading up to the Republican National Convention. On October 27, 2017, Manafort was indicted by a federal grand jury for conspiracy against the United States, among other charges.
• Carter Page: Page, hired as a foreign policy advisor to Trump's 2016 campaign, was known to have deep ties to Gazprom, Russia's state-owned gas company. In July 2016, a month after Russia's DNC meddling was reveled in the press, Page traveled to Moscow to make a speech. The Trump campaign approved this trip, saying he would not be traveling as an official representative of the campaign. In the speech he delivered in Moscow, he criticized American foreign policy as being hypocritical – remarks which ultimately led to his resignation from Trump's campaign. Before joining the campaign, he was a businessman "of no particular renown" working in the Moscow branch of Merrill Lynch before creating his own consulting agency. Previously, Trump identified Page as one of a small group of advisors helping to craft his foreign policy platform during the campaign. However, President Trump's staff now claims that "Carter Page is an individual who the [then] president-elect does not know." Page met with Russian Ambassador Sergey Kislyak at the Republican National Convention in 2016. Buzzfeed recently reported that Page had met with a Russian intelligence agent named Victor Podobnyy in 2013, who was reportedly trying to recruit Page. Podobnyy was later charged by the U.S. for acting as an unregistered agent of a foreign government.
• Tevfik Arif: Arif, who founded Bayrock, a real estate group known to have many deals with Trump, had a 17-year career in the Soviet Ministry of Commerce and Trade.
• Roger Stone: Stone, a former advisor to Trump, had back channel conversations with Julian Assange, the founder of Wikileaks, which is the organization that published the DNC leaks and Podesta emails during the 2016 elections. He also had exchanges with Guccifer 2.0 -- a hacker believed to be linked to Russia involved in the 2016 hacking of Democratic National Committee emails -- in August 2016. Also in August, he tweeted "it will soon [be] Podesta's time in the barrell." About two months later, Wikileaks began posting John Podesta's emails.
• Felix Sater: Sater, formerly a senior advisor to the Trump Organization, is a Russian-born Bayrock associate with extensive involvement in organized crime. In 2015, he wrote an email to Trump's lawyer, Cohen, referencing then-candidate Trump saying: "Our boy can become President of the USA and we can engineer it. I will get all of Putins team to buy in on this, I will manage this process."
• Alex Shnaider: Born in Russia, Shnaider co-financed a real estate project with Trump. Shnaider's father-in-law, Boris J. Birshtein, was a close business associate of Sergei Mikhaylov, the head of one of the largest branches of the Russian mob.
• JD Gordon: Gordon, a national security advisor for the Trump campaign met with Russian Ambassador to the US Sergey Kislyak during the Republican National Convention in Cleveland in July, who he told he would like to improve US - Russia relations. He advocated for a change to the GOP national platform to make their policies more pro-Russian and less pro-Ukraine, a change which Gordon said was directly supported by then-candidate Donald Trump.
• Wilbur Ross: Ross, President Trump's Secretary of Commerce, was the top shareholder in the Bank of Cyprus, an institution with deep Russian ties and investors who made fortunes under Russian President Vladimir Putin. According to McClatchy, the banking system in Cyprus, because of its dependence on Russian investors, is money-laundering concern for the US State Department. Ross served as the vice chairman of the board of directors for the Bank of Cyprus. The second largest investor in the Bank of Cyprus was Viktor Vekselberg, who once served on the Russian state-owned oil giant Rosneft, which is under partial sanction by the US Treasury Department. Vekselberg is known to have a close relationship with Vladimir Putin. In February, six senators sent a letter to Ross inquiring about his relationship to Vekselberg. The senators also inquired about Ross's relationship with Vladimir Strzhalkovsky, who is also linked to the Bank of Cyprus, was a former KGB agent, and is believed to be a Putin associate.
• Erik Prince: Prince, who had no formal role with the Trump campaign or transition team, had a secret meeting with a Russian close to President Putin, arranged by the United Arab Emirates, the Washington Post recently reported. The meeting reportedly took place around January 11, 2017 on the Seychelles islands, and was allegedly part of an effort to establish a back-channel line of communication between Russia and then President-elect Trump. The UAE agreed to facilitate the meeting in order to explore Russia's willingness to curtail its relationship with Iran. Prince was a supporter of Trump, and has ties to Steve Bannon and Education Secretary Betsy DeVos, who is his sister. He was also seen in Trump transition offices in December.
• Michael Cohen: Cohen is a longtime associate of President Trump's and is his current personal lawyer. He has come under scrutiny for pursuing a Trump Tower deal in Moscow while Trump was campaigning to be President, and for alleged meetings with Russian officials in Prague. In January 2017, he met with a Ukrainian opposition politician and Felix Sater to discuss a plan to give Russia long term control over Ukraine and lift sanctions against Russia. They then put this plan in a sealed envelope and left it in the office of then National Security Advisor Michael Flynn.
• George Papadopoulos: Papadopoulos was a foreign policy advisor for the Trump Campaign. On October 27, 2017 it was revealed that Papadopoulos had plead guilty to making a false statement to federal investigators "about the timing, extent and nature of his relationships and interactions with certain foreign nationals whom he understood to have close connections with senior Russian officials." While working for the Trump Campaign, Papadopoulos met with an overseas professor who told him about the Russians possessing "dirt" on Hillary Clinton in the form of "thousands of emails." He repeatedly sought to use his connections to arrange a meeting between the campaign and Russian government officials. On March 31, 2016, at a foreign policy meeting with Trump and other campaign advisers, Papadopoulos shared that he could help arrange a meeting between Trump and Putin. He sent multiple emails to other members of the campaign about his contact with "the Russians" and "outreach to Russia."

In addition to these ties, it appears that Trump and his team are conscious of their guilt. In late February 2017, CNN reported that "the FBI rejected a recent White House request to publicly knock down media reports about communications between Donald Trump's associates and Russians known to US intelligence during the 2016 presidential campaign." This request may be a violation of procedures that limits communications between the White House and FBI on pending investigations.

Why is America's leader and his team so close to Russia? This is either due to poor judgement or a deeper personal, financial, or political link between President Trump and Russia. It is not normal for the leader of our country to be so extensively tied to a foreign government that has sought to undermine democracies across the globe, and connections like these should be concerning to American citizens everywhere.

As of August 2024, leaving Citizens Insurance in Florida could potentially cost you an average increase of over $500 on your homeowners insurance due to a proposed 14% rate hike by Citizens, impacting over a million Florida residents; this is part of an effort to reduce the number of Citizens policyholders by the end of the year. 

Key points to remember: 

• Significant rate increase:
  Citizens is planning a substantial rate increase of around 14% which could translate to a significant cost increase when switching away from them. 
• State-backed insurer:
  Citizens is Florida's insurer of last resort, meaning it is intended for people who cannot find coverage in the private market.

TALLAHASSEE, Fla. — More than a million Floridians could face a major increase in the price of their homeowners insurance.

Citizens Property Insurance proposed raising its rates by about 14% to reduce the amount of insurance holders by the end of the year — which could increase average prices for policy holders by more than $500.

According to information from the Florida Office of Insurance Regulation, a public rate hearing was held on Aug. 1, and state officials will decide "to either approve or disapprove the rate being requested based on whether the company has provided adequate support for the request."

A statement from the Florida Office of Insurance Regulation said the decision and final order was expected to be published Monday, but an announcement has yet to be handed down.

Some insurance companies left the state as rates soared, forcing people to use Citizens — the state insurer of last resort.

The company says the new rate would be within 20% of private carriers, making some people no longer eligible for Citizens, which would reduce financial risks.

According to the National Association of Realtors, the state has the highest rates in the nation at nearly $11,000 a year — that’s four times the national average.

“Secondarily, as those prospective homeowners are facing an even tighter challenge, you look at, say, pre-pandemic monthly costs have more than doubled in just about any fashion. So this only exacerbates the challenges that prospective homeowners face,” said Colin Rice, a Land Use and Real Estate Attorney with Older Lundy.

The Citizens’ governing board passed the recommendation in June, and it now needs approval by state regulations.

If approved, the rates would go into effect for renewal policies after Jan. 1, 2025.

The Choice this Election is between Corporate and Oligarchic Power

There is a civil war within capitalism. Kamala Harris is the face of corporate power. Donald Trump is the mascot of the oligarchs. Either way, we lose.

The choice in the elections is between corporate and oligarchic power. Corporate power needs stability and a technocratic government. Oligarchic power thrives on chaos and, as Steve Bannon says, the “deconstruction of the administrative state.” Neither are democratic. They have each bought up the political class, the academy and the press. Both are forms of exploitation that impoverish and disempower the public. Both funnel money upwards into the hands of the billionaire class. Both dismantle regulations, destroy labor unions, gut government services in the name of austerity, privatize every aspect of American society, from utilities to schools, perpetuate permanent wars, including the genocide in Gaza, and neuter a media that should, if it was not controlled by corporations and the rich, investigate their pillage and corruption. Both forms of capitalism disembowel the country, but they do it with different tools and have different goals.

Kamala Harris, anointed by the richest Democratic Party donors without receiving a single primary vote, is the face of corporate power. Donald Trump is the buffoonish mascot for the oligarchs. This is the split within the ruling class. It is a civil war within capitalism played out on the political stage. The public is little more than a prop in an election where neither party will advance their interests or protect their rights.

George Monbiot and Peter Hutchison in their book “Invisible Doctrine: The Secret History of Neoliberalism,” refer to corporate power as “housebroken capitalism.” Housebroken capitalists need consistent government policies and fixed trade agreements because they have made investments that take time, sometimes years, to mature. Manufacturing and agriculture industries are examples of “housebroken capitalism.”

Monbiot and Hutchison refer to oligarchic power as “warlord capitalism.” Warlord capitalism seeks the total eradication of all impediments to the accumulation of profits including regulations, laws and taxes. It makes its money by charging rent, by erecting toll booths to every service we need to survive and collecting exorbitant fees. 

The political champions of warlord capitalism are the demagogues of the far right, including Trump, Boris Johnson, Giorgia Meloni, Narendra Modi, Victor Orban and Marine Le Pen. They sow dissension by peddling absurdities, such as the great replacement theory, and dismantling structures that provide stability, such as the European Union. This creates uncertainty, fear and insecurity. Those that orchestrate this insecurity promise, if we surrender even more rights and civil liberties, that they will save us from phantom enemies, such as immigrants, Muslims and other demonized groups.

The epicenters of warlord capitalism are private equity firms. Private equity firms such as Apollo, Blackstone, the Carlyle Group and Kohlberg Kravis Roberts, buy up and plunder businesses. They pile on debt. They refuse to reinvest. They slash staff. They willfully drive companies into bankruptcy. The object is not to sustain businesses but to harvest them for assets, to make short-term profit. Those who run these firms, such as Leon Black, Henry Kravis, Stephen Schwarzman and David Rubenstein, have amassed personal fortunes in the billions of dollars.

Trump’s cohort of Silicon Valley backers, led by Elon Musk, were what The New York Times writes, “finished with Democrats, regulators, stability, all of it. They were opting instead for the freewheeling, fortune-generating chaos that they knew from the startup world.” They planned to “plant devices in people’s brains, replace national currencies with unregulated digital tokens, [and] replace generals with artificial intelligence systems.” 

Billionaire Peter Thiel, a founder of PayPal and a Trump supporter, has waged war on “confiscatory taxes.” He funds an anti-tax political action committee and proposes the construction of floating nations that would impose no compulsory income taxes. 

Israeli-American billionaire Miriam Adelson, widow of casino magnate Sheldon Adelson, with an estimated net worth of $35 billion, has given Trump $100 million for his campaign. While Adelson, who was born and raised in Israel, is a fervent Zionist, she is also part of the club of oligarchs who seek to slash taxes for the rich, taxes that have already been cut by Congress, or diminished through a series of legal loopholes. 

The economist Adam Smith warned that unless rentier income was heavily taxed and put back into a financial system it would self-destruct.

The wreckage private equity firms and the oligarchs orchestrate, is taken out on workers who are forced into a gig economy and who have seen stable salaries and benefits eradicated. It is taken out on pension funds that are depleted because of usurious fees, or are abolished. It is taken out on our health and safety. Residents of nursing homes, for example, owned by private equity firms, experience 10 percent more deaths — not to mention higher fees — because of staffing shortages and reduced compliance with standards of care.  

Private equity firms are an invasive species. They are also ubiquitous. They have acquired educational institutions, utility companies, and retail chains, while bleeding taxpayers hundreds of billions in subsidies which are made possible by bought-and-paid-for prosecutors, politicians, and regulators. What is particularly galling is that many of the industries seized by private equity firms — water, sanitation, electrical grids, hospitals — were paid for out of public funds. They cannibalize the nation, leaving behind shuttered and bankrupt industries. 

Gretchen Morgenson and Joshua Rosner document how private equity works in the book “These are the Plunderers: How Private Equity Runs-and Wrecks-America.”

“Routinely lionized in the financial press for their dealmaking and lauded for their ‘charitable’ giving, these unbridled capitalists have mounted expensive lobbying campaigns to ensure continued enrichment from favorable tax laws,” they write.
 
“Hefty donations have won them positions of power on museum boards and think tanks. They’ve published books on leadership extolling ‘the importance of humility and humanity’ at the top, while eviscerating those at the bottom. Their companies arrange for them to avoid paying taxes on the billions in gains that their stockholdings generate. And, of course, they rarely mention that the companies they own are among the largest beneficiaries of government investments in highways, railroads, and primary education, reaping massive perks from subsidies and tax policies that allow them to pay substantially lower rates on their earnings,” they explain.
 
“These men are America’s modern-age robber barons. But unlike many of their predecessors in the nineteenth century, who amassed stupefying riches by extracting a young nation’s natural resources, today’s barons mine their wealth from the poor and middle class through complex financial dealings.”

The housebroken capitalists are represented by politicians such as Joe Biden, Kamala Harris, Barack Obama, Keir Starmer and Emmanuel Macron. But “housebroken capitalism” is no less destructive. It pushed through the North American Free Trade Agreement (NAFTA), the greatest betrayal of the American working class since the 1947 Taft-Hartley Act, which placed crippling restrictions on union organizing. It revoked the Banking Act of 1933 (Glass-Steagall) which separated commercial banking from investment banking. Tearing down the firewall between commercial and investment banks led to the global financial meltdown in 2007 and 2008, including the collapse of nearly 500 banks. It pushed through the elimination of the Fairness Doctrine by the Federal Communications Commission under Ronald Reagan as well as the Telecommunications Act under Bill Clinton’s presidency, allowing a handful of corporations to consolidate control of media outlets.

It destroyed the old welfare system, 70 percent of the recipients of whom were children. It doubled our prison population and militarized the police. In the process of moving manufacturing to countries such as Mexico, Bangladesh and China, where workers toil in sweatshops, 30 million Americans were subjected to mass layoffs according to figures compiled by the Labor Institute. Meanwhile, it piled up massive deficits — the federal budget deficit rose to $1.8 trillion in 2024, with total national debt approaching $36 trillion — and neglected our basic infrastructure, including electrical grids, roads, bridges and public transportation, while spending more on our military than all the other major powers on Earth combined.

These two forms of capitalism are species of totalitarian capitalism, or what the political philosopher Sheldon Wolin calls “inverted totalitarianism.” In each form of capitalism, democratic rights are abolished. The public is under constant surveillance. Labor unions are dismantled or defanged. The media serves the powerful and dissident voices are silenced or criminalized. Everything is commoditized from the natural world to our relationships. Grassroots and popular movements are outlawed. The ecocide continues. Politics is burlesque.

Debt peonage and wage stagnation ensures political control and the further consolidation of wealth. Banks and corporate financiers enslave not only individuals with debt peonage but also cities, municipalities, states and the federal government. The rise in interest rates, coupled with declining public revenues, especially through taxation, is a way to extract the last bits of capital from citizens, as well as from the government. Once individuals, states or federal agencies cannot pay their bills — and for many Americans this often means medical bills — assets are sold to corporations, or seized. Public land, property and infrastructure, along with pension plans, are privatized. Individuals are pushed out of their homes and into financial and personal distress.

“The head of Goldman Sachs came out and said that Goldman Sachs workers are the most productive in the world,” the economist Michael Hudson, author of Killing the Host: How Financial Parasites and Debt Destroy the Global Economy, told me. “That’s why they’re paid what they are. The concept of productivity in America is income divided by labor. So if you’re Goldman Sachs and you pay yourself $20 million a year in salary and bonuses, you’re considered to have added $20 million to GDP, and that’s enormously productive. So we’re talking with tautology. We’re talking with circular reasoning here.”

“So the issue is whether Goldman Sachs, Wall Street and predatory pharmaceutical firms, actually add ‘product’ or whether they’re just exploiting other people,” he continued. “That’s why I used the word parasitism in my book’s title. People think of a parasite as simply taking money, taking blood out of a host or taking money out of the economy. But in nature it’s much more complicated. The parasite can’t simply come in and take something. First of all, it needs to numb the host. It has an enzyme so that the host doesn’t realize the parasite’s there. And then the parasites have another enzyme that takes over the host’s brain. It makes the host imagine that the parasite is part of its own body, actually part of itself and hence to be protected. That’s basically what Wall Street has done. It depicts itself as part of the economy. Not as a wrapping around it, not as external to it, but actually the part that’s helping the body grow, and that actually is responsible for most of the growth. But in fact it’s the parasite that is taking over the growth.”

“The result is an inversion of classical economics,” Hudson said. “It turns Adam Smith upside down. It says what the classical economists said was unproductive – parasitism – actually is the real economy. And that the parasites are labor and industry that get in the way of what the parasite wants – which is to reproduce itself, not help the host, that is, labor and capital.”

The Weimarization of the American working class is by design. It is about creating a world of masters and serfs, of empowered oligarchic and corporate elites and a disempowered public. And it is not only our wealth that is taken from us. It is our liberty. The so-called self-regulating market, as the economist Karl Polanyi writes in “The Great Transformation,” always ends with mafia capitalism and a mafia political system. A system of self-regulation, Polanyi warns, leads to “the demolition of society.”

If you vote for Harris or Trump — I have no intention of voting for any candidate who sustains the genocide in Gaza — you are voting for one form of rapacious capitalism over another. All the other issues, from gun rights to abortion, are tangential and used to distract the public from the civil war within capitalism. The tiny circle of power these two forms of capitalism embody, exclude the public. These are elite clubs, clubs where wealthy members inhabit each side of the divide, or at times go back and forth, but are impenetrable to outsiders. 

The irony is that the unchecked greed of the corporatists, the housebroken capitalists, created a small number of billionaires who became their nemesis, the warlord capitalists. If the pillage is not halted, if we do not restore through popular movements control over the economy and the political system, then warlord capitalism will triumph. The warlord capitalists will cement into place neo-feudalism, while the public is distracted and divided by the antics of killer clowns like Trump. 

I see nothing on the horizon to avoid this fate.

Trump, for now, is the figurehead of warlord capitalism. But he did not create it, does not control it and can easily be replaced. Harris, whose nonsensical ramblings can make Biden look focused and coherent, is the vacuous, empty suit the technocrats adore.

Pick your poison. Destruction by corporate power or destruction by oligarchy. The end result is the same. That is what the two ruling parties offer in November. Nothing else.

Florida’s home insurer of last resort is in serious trouble. Will Milton put it over the edge?

New YorkCNN — An exodus of national insurance companies from Florida, combined with local private insurers canceling plans, has left many homeowners there with only one option: Citizens Property Insurance Corp.

The state-backed nonprofit home insurance company was set up to be an insurer of last resort for those who can’t find coverage in the private market. With 1.3 million policies in force as of last month, three times as many compared to five years ago, Citizens is by far the largest provider in the state.

But now, with Hurricane Helene and Hurricane Milton both making landfall and devastating homes in Florida within just days of each other, the insurer will almost certainly have to pay out billions of dollars in claims.

Can Citizens stay afloat?

The answer lies in the insurer’s structure — which might be reassuring to policyholders, even if it ultimately leads to higher premiums.

Staying solvent

​Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis warned earlier this year that Citizens was “not solvent” and that it can’t function with “millions of people on that because if a storm hits, it’s going to cause problems for the state.”

“Thankfully, Florida avoided the worst-case scenario forecasted with Milton, but that doesn’t change the fact that Citizens is potentially one catastrophic storm or storm season away from insolvency,” Sen. Sheldon Whitehouse, a Democrat from Rhode Island, told CNN in an emailed statement.

“Should claims exceed the insurer’s ability to pay, Citizens has a mechanism to pass its losses on to Florida families, who are already paying sky-high premiums,” said Whitehouse, who chairs the Senate’s Budget Committee and is leading an investigation into Citizens’ viability. “Recouping billions of dollars in losses from Floridians is unlikely to be feasible economically or politically, let alone in time to pay massive claims — hence the Budget Committee concern about possible requests for a federal bailout.”

The only way someone qualifies for insurance from Citizens is if the lowest quote they get from a private insurer is more than 20% greater than the Citizens’ quote. Their property also has to be valued at $700,000 or less unless they are located in Miami-Dade or Monroe counties, where the cap is $1 million.

Flood waters inundated a neighborhood after Hurricane Milton came ashore on October 10 in Punta Gorda, Florida. The storm made landfall as a Category 3 hurricane in the Siesta Key area of Florida, causing damage and flooding throughout Central Florida. 

But while Milton and Helene will undoubtedly squeeze Floridians and the state-backed home insurance provider, the storms won’t cause it to go under.

“Citizens cannot go insolvent like a private insurer,” Mark Friedlander, a spokesperson for the Insurance Information Institute, an industry trade group, told CNN in a statement. Because of the way it is structured, “in a worst-case scenario where its reserves would dwindle due to a high volume of storms claims, Citizens is allowed by state regulations to implement a premium surcharge to its policyholders and other Florida consumers to ensure all claims are paid,” he said.

Those “other” customers include people who have other kinds of policies — including auto, boat, pet and renters— living in Florida who could see their premiums go up to cover Citizens’ claims even if they don’t have a Citizens policy.

Representatives for DeSantis did not respond to CNN’s request for comment. The Republican governor said Thursday in a CNBC interview that since Hurricane Ian two years ago, more private home insurance companies “are coming into Florida.” The state has sought to offload some of Citizens’ policies to them. And at the end of last year, it was able to transfer 300,000 policies to private insurers.

CNN — The US Senate Budget Committee is launching an investigation into whether Florida’s state-backed home and property insurance company has enough money in the bank to withstand future disasters, as scientists warn warming oceans and sea level rise are making storms more destructive.

Citizens Property Insurance Corporation exists as a so-called insurer of last resort - if owners cannot convince a private insurance company to cover their property, Citizens will step in. It insures about 1.3 million policyholders in the state, who typically pay more money for a policy that covers less.

But as coastlines disappear and storms get wetter and more dangerous, risk is through the roof for many of the properties Citizens insures, putting intense financial pressure on the state-backed company. During a March press conference, Florida’s Republican Gov. Ron DeSantis said, “I think most people know Citizens has not been solvent.”

After Florida was walloped in 2022 and 2023 by major hurricanes that together cost more than $100 billion in damages, Committee Chair Sen. Sheldon Whitehouse, a Democrat from Rhode Island, is writing to top Florida officials asking for documents that show how Citizens is planning to tackle mounting costs and exposure if a massive storm were to hit a major metropolitan area, like Miami or Tampa. The letter was shared first with CNN.

“Florida is on the front line of the climate crisis, and it could take just one major hurricane to render Citizens insolvent - a fact the current governor has, himself, admitted,” Whitehouse said in a statement.

Citizens spokesperson Michael Peltier told CNN the insurer will “certainly cooperate” with the committee’s investigation. In an additional comment provided to CNN on Friday, Peltier said Citizens is “structured so that it will always be able to protect its policyholders and pay claims.”

Of major concern to the committee is that if a major city gets hit, millions of Florida policyholders who aren’t on Citizens could see massive spikes in their insurance costs. That’s because state law says Citizens can tack special assessments onto millions of Floridians with car and home insurance, even if they are insured through private companies, not Citizens.

In his Friday comment to CNN, Peltier said this structure is the reason why Citizens would be able to pay out future claims.

“If Citizens were to pay out all reserves and reinsurance following a major storm or series of disasters, it is required by Florida law to levy surcharges and assessments on its policyholders and all Florida insurance consumers until any deficit is eliminated,” Peltier stated. “As such, Citizens will always have the ability to pay claims.”

Peltier also added the insurer has been reducing the number of its policyholders and “returning policies to the private market.”

In its letter to Florida officials, the Budget Committee expressed concern about “potential economic consequences of an eventual wide-scale decline in property values.”

Two years ago, Citizens wrote that if the state was hit by a 1-in-100-year storm, Florida insurance holders “would have been on the hook for $24 billion in assessments tacked onto monthly premiums for years.” As the number of Citizens policies have grown, reports from reinsurance companies Munich Re and Swiss Re have found that number could be much higher, anywhere from $36-$162 billion dollars, depending on how severe a future hurricane could be.

If that were to happen, the Senate Budget Committee is worried Florida might turn to the federal government looking for a bailout, Whitehouse said.

“The Committee has significant concerns about how such an insolvency would affect not only the Florida real estate market, but also the broader economy and the federal budget,” he said. “Should Florida look to the federal government for emergency relief, all American taxpayers could be on the hook.”

Fears about a possible federal bailout are not unfounded, Benjamin Keys, a real estate professor at the Wharton School of the University of Pennsylvania, told CNN.

“They absolutely have a reason to be concerned; the exposure is enormous,” Keys said. “1.3 million of the riskiest policies in the riskiest state, full stop. It’s correlated exposure – if a hurricane hits your house, it hits my house.”

‘An extreme amount of risk’Of the states that have state-backed insurers of last resort, Florida’s is by far the largest. It has steadily increased the number of consumers who can’t get insurance anywhere else, as private insurers have pulled out of the state and smaller insurers have gone bankrupt after back-to-back major hurricanes.

State insurers of last resort were originally intended as a stopgap for consumers, ensuring their coverage wouldn’t be interrupted. But in Florida in particular, many more people have been forced onto Citizens as other insurers flee the state or go bankrupt, in part because the state is particularly vulnerable to climate change-fueled losses like hurricanes and rising sea levels, according to the Senate Budget Committee letter.

That is amplified by the fact that Citizens’ policyholders have some of the riskiest properties in the state, Keys added, such as properties on the coast or ones that have flooded multiple times.

Florida isn’t alone; some major private insurers have either pulled out or stopped writing new policies in wildfire-prone California. And premiums have also spiked for consumers on California’s insurer of last resort – known as the FAIR Plan.

But Keys said there are two important things differentiating California’s FAIR plan with Florida’s Citizens. For one thing, California has far fewer consumers on its state-backed insurance – a little more than 268,000 compared to Florida’s 1.3 million. And second, if a major wildfire or storm were to hit California, state law there puts insurance companies on the hook for the high cost of special assessments, rather than individual policyholders.

“The scale is just enormous,” Keys said. “At that scale, that means there’s an extreme amount of risk.”

Keys said the Senate Budget Committee’s investigation signals the federal government is trying to get in front of a future potential disaster – and the billions of damages it could bring.

“We know that in the event of a crisis, it’s very hard for the federal government to withhold aid and support,” Keys said. “It’s not a good look.”

What Types Of Insurance Companies Unfairly Deny Claims?

​Several companies offer various insurance policies and types of coverage, including:

• Homeowners insurance
• Renters insurance
• Car insurance, including liability coverage
• Life insurance
• Health insurance
• Disability insurance
• Pet insurance
• Travel insurance

While some of them do their best for policyholders, many use the “deny, delay, defend” strategy to minimize the amount paid for any claim. 1. Allstate

​Allstate has provided insurance to Americans since 1931. As of 2020, Allstate supplied 10.4% of private passenger auto insurance, 9.8% of personal lines insurance, and 8.5% of homeowners insurance policies in the United States. More than 54,000 people worked full-time for Allstate at the end of 2021. In 2022, Allstate generated $51 billion in revenue and placed 84th on the Fortune 500, Fortune Magazine’s list of U.S. companies with the highest revenues. 

Allstate CEO Thomas Wilson admits that his priority is the shareholders — not the insured parties with claims. The company recently announced plans to raise its rates by about 5.1%. They expect the cost increase to generate another $1.2 in premiums. (Insurance Business Magazine3).

2. Progressive

​Progressive was launched in 1937. From 2020 to 2021, Progressive’s gross profit fell from $7.616 billion to $4.707billion. 

State of Georgia insurance officials accused Progressive of cutting corners and undervaluing claims. They say that taxes paid to an insurer party need to be calculated fairly based on the cash value of the vehicle.

Progressive says they correctly calculated taxes as part of claim payouts, but they recently changed their directive to comply with state oversight on the issue. (CBS 46 News4).

3. UnitedHealth

Richard T. Burke launched UnitedHealth in 1977. Unlike many other insurance companies, UnitedHealth focuses exclusively on health insurance. 

Federal investigators say that UnitedHealthcare underpaid COVID-19 vaccine reimbursements. They explained the insurer would adjust their payments for millions of vaccines administered across the country. The Medicare rate was $40 per vaccine. Authorities say the insurance company did not pay even that amount per vaccine administered.

The Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services say that previous payouts didn’t even cover the cost of giving a vaccine. Authorities also noted that UnitedHealthcare paid too little for COVID-19 testing materials, prohibiting providers from offering testing services. (California Medical Association5).

4. State Farm

​State Farm has been in business since 1922. In 2022, State Farm generated revenue of $89 billion, securing its place as the 44th company on the Fortune 500. 
Their motto is, “Like a good neighbor, State Farm is there.” But do they pay valid claims? The United States SupremeCourt recently upheld a fraud verdict against State Farm in their handling of claims following Hurricane Katrina.

The ruling found claims adjusters tried to deny valid claims by classifying wind damage as flood damage. Victims had to resort to whistle-blowing to hold the insurance company accountable for their actions. (NPR6).

5. Elevance Health (Formerly Anthem)

​Founded in 1946, Anthem is now known as Elevance Health. Their revenue increased from $138.63 billion in 2021 to $156.59 billion in 2022.

One medical center in Maine says that Anthem Insurance is so bad that it will no longer be an in-network provider. They’re giving the insurance company the boot over what they claim is more than $70 million in unpaid claims to the MaineHealth network, including $13 million to the hospital alone.

The move could impact more than 150,000 people in Maine. Patients still using the company will have to pay higher out-of-network rates to be seen at Maine Medical Center or within the MaineHealth network. (Press Herald7).

6. Unum

​Unum has been providing insurance to Americans since 1848. Unum Group’s revenue dropped from $13.162 billion in 2019 to $12.014 billion and $11.991 billion in 2020 and 2021, respectively. 

One of the leading disability insurers in the United States, Unum pays its CEO an estimated $9 million a year. The company was also the subject of litigation from a plaintiff who was denied long-term disability benefits.

The plaintiff alleged that the insurance company used the wrong standards to determine benefit eligibility and made a decision that was arbitrary and capricious. A court recently granted summary disposition in favor of UNUM Group. (Kelly v. UNUM Group, D. Utah, 20228).

7. Federal Employee Benefits

​Despite the name, Federal Employee Benefits does not refer to a government insurance program. Federal Employee Benefits is a little-known insurance company started by Jaques Andres Frym of Pooler, Georgia.  He pleaded guilty to false oaths and false tax documents. He was ordered to pay $142,042.12 in fines and restitution. Frym filed for bankruptcy to dismiss millions in debt. In documents, he underreported income and denied ownership of the insurance company. 8. Farmers

​People have turned to Farmers for insurance since they opened their doors in 1928. Based on revenue and market share, they rank among the top five homeowner’s insurance companies in the U.S. They’re currently 295th on the Fortune 500 list. 

In 2021, Farmers Insurance Group was ordered to pay a former executive a multi-million dollar sum after improperly firing him. The verdict found that the company fired the man because he was willing to testify in a pay bias lawsuit filed by female in-house lawyers. (Coates v. Farmers Insurance Group Inc.10).

The jury found that the company retaliated in violation of the California Fair Employment Housing Act and other laws prohibiting unlawful termination. (Bloomberg Law11).

9. Liberty Mutual

Liberty Mutual launched in 2001, making it one of the youngest companies on this list. Its revenue dropped from $3.068 billion in 2021 to $414 million in 2022. The company is currently 86th on the Fortune 500. 

Liberty Mutual customers may be surprised if the insurer chooses not to renew their policy. Liberty Mutual recently told one homeowner that his home was too much of a risk for wildfires. Critics say non-renewal rates are high, with the company sizing up customers and dropping ones that they consider high risk, even if the customer has been loyal. (Insurance Business America12).

10. USAA

USAA started in 1922, and like Farmers, it’s one of the country’s biggest homeowner’s insurance companies. It ranks seventh for property and casualty insurance. From 2020 to 2021, its revenue grew from $35.617 billion to $36.296 billion. USAA holds the 114th spot on the Fortune 500.

USAA advertises itself as friendly to U.S. service members. However, it’s the CEO who is raking in millions. USAA CEO Wayne Peacock received $1.9 million for his services in 2021. The company reports billions of dollars in profits. (Repairer Driven News13).

A class-action lawsuit is underway against the company in Texas. It alleges that policyholders had their vehicles deemed total losses without agreeing, having their titles revoked and salvaged. (RDN14).

Other companies that have topped the worst insurance company lists in recent years include AIG, Global Life, Conseco, WellPoint, and Torchmark.

What Makes An Insurance Company Good?

​Choosing an insurance company can be challenging. You may opt for an insurance provider who supplies several types of policies so you can save money bundling your policies. However, there are other factors to consider when choosing the best provider.

Stability

High profits could be a sign of an insurance company that’s denying claims or pressuring claimants to take low settlement offers. However, financially stable companies are more likely to stay in business instead of folding from heavy losses. 

Determining which companies have a sound, profitable business strategy and which insurers profit from disreputable practices can be challenging. You can learn about insurance companies from consumer reviews, which could help you determine whether their profit margins come at the expense of frustrated clients. 

Price

Choosing the cheapest insurance plan may be tempting, but there may be better options you should consider. Compare what the coverage includes for the policy price. You may benefit in the long run if you pay more for coverage from an insurance company with a good reputation instead of choosing inexpensive coverage from a provider known for denying claims. 

Service And Communication

​Good insurance companies make it easy to file claims and answer your questions when you call. You shouldn’t feel like your insurance company is trying to avoid your questions or dismiss your concerns. Your insurance company should take all the time needed to put you at ease when you reach out about a claim or have concerns about your policy.

What Makes An Insurance Company Bad?

​Bad insurance companies use unscrupulous tactics intended to minimize their costs. Many tactics bad insurance companies use involve poor communications, misinformation, and deceit.

An insurance company is bad if they:

• Don’t clearly explain why a claim is accepted or denied
• Fail to respond to claims within a reasonable period of time
• Make up reasons that a policy does not cover you
• Ignore evidence that the claim is valid
• Hope that people will give up if they delay a claim
• Make it too hard to report a claim
• Constantly ask for more information when processing a claim
• Purposefully refuse coverage of claims that are covered by their policies
• Undertake other actions to refuse payment in bad faith

Other tactics insurance companies use to inflate their profits include the following:

• Lowball initial offers: Bad insurance companies try to minimize payouts by offering less than the claimant deserves. Claimants with financial issues may feel pressured to accept a low offer to ensure they receive compensation quickly. These claimants may need to be made aware there are other options for financial assistance they can turn to while resolving their claim.
• Requesting claimant’s full medical history: Unscrupulous insurance companies may use a claimant’s medical history to deny a claim. Suppose an insured person seeks compensation for a spinal cord injury they claim they received in a car accident. Suppose the insurance company accesses their medical history. In that case, it may use minor complaints about back pain to argue that the claimant suffered a spinal cord injury before the accident, even if they were never diagnosed with an SCI. 
• Trying to coerce the claimant to make a recorded statement: Every claimant has the right to legal representation. Pressure to record a statement locks in your statement, making it hard to add relevant details later. Sometimes, insurance companies push for formal statements right after the accident. Accident victims may not be aware of all the facts. They could be in shock or suffering from other physical injuries. Accident victims should have the time to recover and discuss the situation with an attorney before answering an insurance company’s questions or providing a signed or recorded statement.
• Being dishonest about claimant rights: Bad insurance companies lie about your rights to prevent you from filing a claim or seeking all the compensation you deserve. These insurance companies may also provide false information, such as telling you you’ll get more money without a lawyer because you won’t have to pay legal fees. These insurance companies may deny claims or delay processing, creating a financial burden to pressure you to accept less than the total compensation you deserve.

Your insurance company should take the time needed to answer your questions, explain your rights, and present your options. Your insurance company shouldn’t make you feel rushed into decisions with insufficient information.

3 Reasons To Steer Clear of Citizens Property Insurance!

​It’s not worth the low premiums! With very little coverage, Citizens Property Insurance is Florida’s “insurer of last resort.”

The last few years have seen insurance premiums increasing at an alarming rate. In fact, the average homeowners premiums in Florida are five times the national average! It’s no wonder many households are at a financial breaking point.

As a result, many homeowners are turning to the marketplace to seek out cheaper insurance coverage. In some cases, the cheapest option is a policy with Citizens Property Insurance.

But is Citizens Insurance a good choice for you? At Harry Levine Insurance, we caution our clients to never purchase a policy from Citizens if they don’t absolutely have to. In this article, we’ll give our three biggest reasons why and what you can do to find homeowners insurance that fits your budget.​

What Is Citizens Property Insurance?Citizens Insurance (formally known as Citizens Property Insurance Corporation) is a state-run, non-profit insurance carrier for Florida residents who are unable to find coverage from private insurance companies.

You may only purchase a Citizens Insurance policy if:

• No other insurer is willing to issue you a policy, or
• Coverage from private insurers is at least 20% higher than a similar Citizens policy.

Because of these reasons, Citizens is known as Florida’s “insurer of last resort.”

Typically, Florida property owners don’t turn to Citizens because they want to, but because they have no other choice.

What’s even worse is that there are some agents who steer customers toward Citizens simply because they don’t have access to the right insurance company.

For instance, they might be a “captive” agent, meaning they can only offer policies from a single company. Others might work with more carriers, but still have very limited options at their disposal.

Because the average Florida resident doesn’t know this, they go with Citizens and end up regretting it.

Reason #1: Low Prices, Lower CoverageBecause Citizens is ultimately a government entity, it does not have to worry about its financial health like a private company would. In fact, it’s a nonprofit organization.
While this keeps premiums low initially, it comes at a very high cost later (literally and figuratively):

• No coverage for car ports, porches, or screened enclosures
• No coverage for theft away from premises
• No coverage for pet liability (i.e. dog bites)
• No coverage for water backups
• No coverage for personal injury (including libel and slander)
• No more than $100,000 in personal liability coverage

And what coverage it does have comes with extremely low limits. For example, jewelry and electronics come with a mere $1,000 coverage limit.

Even policies that Citizen offers as endorsements carry a much lower limit than similar policies in the private insurance market. A mold endorsement is limited to $10,000, while you can find limits as high as $50,000 with other carriers.

To say it bluntly, Citizens insurance simply isn’t enough coverage!

Reason #2: Low Rates Are No Guarantee

With such low premiums and high-risk properties, how does Citizens Property Insurance have enough in the pool to reimburse all the claims they must have?

Sometimes, they don’t.

Whenever an insurance company has to pay out more than it brought in, they need to make a few adjustments to correct the course. This often means increasing premiums when you renew your policy.

However, if Citizens can’t afford to cover all claims, they can levy an assessment (up to 45% of your premium) on all policyholders.

If you switched to Citizens Insurance hoping to save money, this will likely come as a huge shock. In some households, it might even be impossible to pay the higher rate. But not paying your insurance assessment is a lot like not paying your utility bill. If you can’t pay, Citizens cancels your policy and your credit rate drops.

Once that happens, you’re left with the choice to pay out the nose for your premiums or go without insurance coverage.

Further, if the assessment on Citizens policyholders still isn’t enough to cover their losses, they are legally allowed to issue assessments on private market policyholders. Yup…every Florida insurance customer is susceptible to a Citizens assessment.

Sure, your premiums may be low initially, but it’s likely they will skyrocket as soon as the next hurricane comes through. In a state with so many severe storms—hurricanes and summer thunderstorms alike—is Citizens Insurance really a savings?

Reason #3: Not Everyone Is Eligible

When it comes to determining your premiums, insurance carriers don’t care about your income or how many bills you have to pay. But they do factor in the value of your residence and personal property.

Even if you can’t afford to purchase private insurance coverage, you may have to if your home is worth a certain amount. If the total value of your dwelling and your personal belongings is more than $700,000 (or $1 million in Miami-Dade and Monroe counties), you are not eligible for Citizens insurance coverage.

The Bottom Line: Steer Clear of Citizens!If no other insurance company will issue you a policy, Citizens is certainly better than having no coverage at all.

But if you’re just hoping to save a few bucks in a harsh insurance market, we urge you to reconsider, and ultimately, it’s another insurance myth that having the lowest premiums will save you money.

On their website, Citizens even admits that private insurers offer “more coverage options and less restrictive coverage than can be purchased from Citizens.” In a recent article in Insurance Journal, Citizens CEO and President Barry Gilway even stated that it was “unfortunate” that Citizens was becoming the first or only choice for some Florida homeowners.

When the President of your insurance company wishes he didn’t have to write you a policy, that should tell you something.

Even if a private market carrier costs you more per month, you’ll have better insurance coverage, more flexibility, and higher satisfaction than a Citizens insurance policy.

If we experience hurricanes or other widespread covered disasters everyone will be in a tough spot, but Citizens policy holders will be the WORST OFF.” But you just got finished saying that, in the event of a major storm, Citizens can assess its policy holders extra, and even assess private insurance holders in the state.​
2. Citizens is far from bankrupt: Citizens receives an A1 rating from credit rating agency Moody’s 7/2022. Perhaps the reason you don’t like them is that they only pay 7% commission on cheaper policies rather than the usual 11-12% paid by private companies on fat policies.
