The aim of this paper is to demonstrate an improved approach to study seafloor seepages in the Arctic coastal zone with an echosounder calibrated on site. During wintertime field observations of natural rising gas bubbles, we recorded three periods of their increased activity with a total of 63 short-term ejections of bubbles from the seabed. This study presents quantitative estimates of the methane (CH4) flux obtained in wintertime at two levels of the water column: (1) at the bottom/water interface and (2) at the water/sea ice interface. In winter, the flux of CH4 transported by rising bubbles to the bottom water in the shallow part of the ESAS was estimated at ~19 g·m−2 per day, while the flux reaching the water/sea ice interface was calculated as ~15 g·m−2 per day taking into account the diffusion of CH4 in the surrounding water and the enrichment of rising bubbles with nitrogen and oxygen. We suggest that this bubble-transported CH4 flux reaching the water /sea ice interface can be emitted into the atmosphere through numerous ice trenches, leads, and polynyas. This CH4ebullition value detected at the water/sea ice interface is in the mid high range of CH4 ebullition value estimated for the entire ESAS, and two orders higher than the upper range of CH4 ebullition from the northern thermocarst lakes, which are considered as a significant source to the atmospheric methane budget. Introduction Amplified climate warming in the Arctic leads to dramatic environmental and biogeochemical consequences including the ongoing rise in greenhouse gas emissions (primarily, CH4 and CO2). Thawing permafrost and collapsing gas hydrates in the Arctic may move substantial amounts of freeze-locked carbon from the land and ocean to the atmosphere on decadal–centennial timescales. It has been shown that CH4 release from thawing terrestrial permafrost is gradual [1], whereas the massive release of CH4 from the seafloor is increasing drastically because of the vulnerability of the Arctic’s giant carbon/hydrate pool to progressive subsea permafrost degradation [2,3,4,5,6,7]. The East Siberian Arctic Shelf (ESAS), the largest and shallowest shelf of the World’s Ocean, is a seaward extension of the Siberian tundra inundated during the Holocene transgression 7–15 kyr ago. The ESAS is experiencing among the highest rates of climate warming and has large, yet poorly constrained potentially vulnerable carbon pools. The ESAS system is estimated to host 60–80% of the world’s subsea permafrost carbon (~500 PgC) and 75% of the shallow shelf hydrates, which is about ~400 PgC [2], while the Earth’s atmosphere holds in present ~875 PgC (~420 ppm) of CO2 and ~6 PgC (~1923 ppb) of CH4 (data are taken from https://gml.noaa.gov/aggi/aggi.html, accessed in 16 March 2023) [8]. The sustained release of CH4 into the atmosphere from thawing the Arctic permafrost may be a positive and significant feedback to climate warming. Atmospheric venting of CH4 from the ESAS was recently reported to be on par with the flux from the Arctic tundra and northern taiga; however, the future scale of these releases remains unclear [4,9]. Current estimates show that CH4 emissions from the ESAS are comparable with the entire World Ocean’s emissions and are estimated at ~17 Tg CH4 yr−1 [4] and ~12 Tg CH4 yr−1 [10], respectively. The CH4 levels in the ESAS seawater have exceeded atmospherically equilibrated levels over extensive areas by a factor of 10–100, evidencing that this marine system has started releasing CH4, producing gas fluxes larger than for the rest of the entire World Ocean [3,4,8]. Subsea permafrost holding ~1400 PgC, including hydrates, free gas, and carbon as a substrate for CH4 biogenic production [2,9,11], might be much more vulnerable than its terrestrial counterpart, as it is not only changing in response to glacial/interglacial Arctic warming (~7 °C), but experiencing an additional ~10 °C warming from the overlying seawater since inundation in the early Holocene, which is now further enhanced by increasing the river’s runoff/heating effect [8,9]. An important study based on an extensive redrilling investigation of subsea permafrost (the 2010s versus 1980s) in the southeastern Laptev Sea concluded that subsea permafrost has reached thawing temperatures only in recent decades and that the thaw horizon in subsea permafrost is deepening by ~14 cm annually, which is 3.5 times faster than deepening rates observed earlier [7]. Moreover, it has been shown that the wind-driven air–gas exchange during storms may regularly ventilate CH4 from the water column in the shallow ESAS waters [8], contributing directly to the atmospheric budget. However, numerical models appear to imply a stable subsea permafrost (e.g., [12]), yet long-term field observations suggest otherwise [2,3,4,5,6,7]. This is in contradiction with the long-term field observations, including results of the redrilling research campaign [4,7,9]. Given the extent of the seepage areas and the magnitude of current and potential future emissions, new approaches are required to effectively, rapidly, and quantitatively survey the large seepage areas. Bubbles in the water column usually come from seeps on the sea floor and can be detected using backscattered images of bubbles because there is a pronounced acoustic impedance difference between the water and bubbles [4,13,14,15,16]. In places, bubbles release as a vigorous flow that often reaches the sea surface; on echograms, such bubble plumes create specific flare-like images. Sonar surveys provide an effective tool for mapping seabed CH4 fluxes and monitoring marine seepages driven by subsea permafrost degradation. In this paper, we report the results of a single beam acoustic survey performed to quantify CH4 ebullition in the shallow ESAS region. The study attempts to evaluate CH4 fluxes from seabed seepages observed from the fast ice using a single beam echosounder calibrated on site. Herein, we present in-situ calibration experiments to investigate the evolution of bubble plume sonar return from rising artificially produced bubble plumes spanning a broad range of flow rates, and to infer the proportions of small and large bubbles in the sonar return signatures. To assess the fraction of bubble-transported CH4 reaching the sea surface, we performed experimental work from the fast ice in the northwestern part of Buor-Khaya Bay, located in the near shore zone of the Laptev Sea, in April 2012 (Figure 1). This work is focused on the estimation of the CH4 flux from the bottom sediments into the water column, the assessment of the CH4 fraction in the rising bubbles, and the quantification of the natural CH4 bubble flux using both sonar data and gas composition data. The study site was located near the CH4 hotspot discovered in September 2005 [2,3]. Over-polluting and under-reporting: A look inside Russia’s dirty fossil fuel industry By Bryson Wiese, Jake Garza Seymour | September 27, 2023 Russia’s invasion of Ukraine inspired the G7 nations to cap the price of Russian oil, eroding the Kremlin’s profits from energy exports. But there is a reason beyond the invasion for global consumers to be wary of Russian oil and gas: greenhouse gas “emissions intensity,” or the amount of greenhouse gas emissions emitted per barrel of oil (or its equivalent) produced. The combustion of oil and gas always produces greenhouse gases that contribute to global warming. However, not all oil and gas is equally polluting. Around a third of the lifecycle emissions come from “industry emissions,” meaning emissions from the stages leading up to end use (usually combustion). Industry emissions vary based on how a given quantity of oil or gas is produced, transported, and processed. Using a 2022 emissions dataset covering two-thirds of the world’s oil and gas wells developed by the nonprofit Rocky Mountain Institute, we found that Russian oil and gas assets have "an industry emissions intensity that is nearly double" the global industry average (based on a 20-year time frame for assessing emissions’ impact). The methane factor. Why are Russian oil and gas so dirty? Crucially, oil and gas operations emit not just carbon dioxide but also methane. Methane—the primary component in natural gas—is a highly potent greenhouse gas that is often captured and burned for energy. However, during production and transportation, some methane accidentally leaks into the atmosphere or is released intentionally as a waste product via flaring and venting. The UN Global Methane Assessment estimates that around a quarter of methane emissions from human activity come from the global oil and gas industry. Russia’s weak methane regulations, leaky pipelines, and poorly managed operations are largely to blame for the country’s emissions-intensive oil and gas. Methane has more than 80 times the global warming potential of carbon dioxide during its first 20 years in the atmosphere and around 30 times the warming potential over 100 years. Given these climate consequences, many major oil and gas producers have sought to manage methane emissions by mitigating leaks and banning the venting of gas. Russia, however, is notorious for ignoring these best practices for methane management. Even before the Ukraine invasion, Russia’s gas giant Gazprom covered up major methane leaks despite pressure from the international community for greater transparency. Russia ranks first in the world in total methane emissions from oil and gas operations. The average Russian oil and gas asset in 2022 was 75 percent more methane-intensive than the global average, based on the Rocky Mountain Institute dataset of oil and gas lifecycle emissions. Russia’s emissions intensity far exceeds that of most other major oil and gas producers, including the United States, Canada, Saudi Arabia, China, Qatar, and Norway. Methane’s warming power makes the gas a key concern as governments and companies race to reach net zero emissions by 2050. The 2021 Global Methane Pledge, an initiative spearheaded by the United States and the European Union, has united countries representing 45 percent of the world’s human-caused methane emissions behind a pledge to cut emissions by at least 30 percent by 2030. Russia declined to participate. Moscow’s dubious numbers. It is worth noting that just as there are concerns about the validity of Russia’s self-reported economic data—as Jeffrey Sonnenfeld and Steven Tian at the Yale School of Management (with whom we’ve collaborated) have highlighted—the Kremlin’s assessments of its own methane emissions similarly deserve scrutiny. The International Energy Agency’s independent estimate of Russian methane emissions in 2021 was about three times the total officially reported by Moscow to the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change. Since Russia’s invasion of Ukraine in February 2022, Moscow’s numbers have become even less reliable. Yet there is reason to believe that Russian methane emissions have gotten worse. War-related production disruptions have led to reported spikes in flaring and venting events at idled Russian oil and gas wells. Meanwhile, decreased access to foreign capital and technology may have made it harder for Russian companies to monitor leaks and control emissions. RELATED: The Battle of Kursk probably won’t result in nuclear weapons use against Ukraine. But Russian escalation vis-à-vis NATO can’t be ruled out. The Nord Stream pipeline leaks were a high-profile symbol of the war’s climate impacts and the energy sector’s contributions to emissions. Discovered on September 26, 2022, and attributed to a mysterious act of sabotage, the leaks in gas lines running from Russia to Germany under the Baltic Sea likely were the largest methane-emitting event on record. Estimates vary, but researchers say the leaks probably spewed between 100,000 and 400,000 tons of methane into the atmosphere. Although these leaks were comparable to the yearly emissions of around 9 million cars, they were equivalent to only around one to two days of the global fossil fuel industry’s normal methane emissions. While the Nord Stream leaks lasted only a few weeks, the Kremlin’s emissions-intensive fossil fuels continue to disproportionately contribute to climate change. Sadly, the climate seems to be yet another in a long list of casualties from Putin’s war in Ukraine. Methane is a powerful greenhouse gas, with a significantly greater global warming potential than carbon dioxide, according to NASA. The methane emissions in the Arctic, fueled by the melting of permafrost on the sea floor, are one driver of climate change, NASA said. The emissions are presenting a growing risk. Methane levels Semiletov's team found in the air above the seawater were "extremely high," he said. "Nobody has detected these concentrations. "Levels are highest seen in decades of research Semiletov, a professor at Tomsk Polytechnic University in Siberia, said the ship full of scientists reached the East Siberian Sea around the beginning of October. The water is usually tough to get through due to it being "covered in ice," but Semiletov said this year was different. The water was "fully open." The team studied more than 60 sites known to have had methane emissions at the water's surface in the past. Each emission site varies in size. Some spread across 100 square meters of sea surface. Others can cover a square kilometer. When the plumes of methane reach the surface, the water looks like it's boiling. The researchers take samples of the air above the bubbling columns to determine how much methane is coming out of the sea, and its potential to alter the atmosphere. In previous trips, Semiletov said he found methane at 3, 4 or 5 parts per million at these sites, well above the average atmospheric methane concentration of 1.7 parts per million. On this trip, some of the measurements were up to 16 parts per million. Semiletov said he embarked on 30 to 35 expeditions over the past 15 years, but on this one there were some surprises. He said the methane emissions, which look like torches or flares, are "all increasing. "Building on a legacy of breakthroughs Semiletov and his colleague Natalia Shakhova raised an alarm with their 2010 paper in the journal Science showing that underwater permafrost on the seabed of the Arctic shelf could melt and release methane into the ocean. Prior to that, scientists thought the sub-sea permafrost was essentially an impermeable barrier keeping methane at bay. In a 2012 interview published by the European Geophysical Union, Shakhova said the hydrocarbons buried beneath the Arctic shelf have potential to be a major contributor to climate change. As permafrost on the seabed melts, it could dramatically change Earth's atmosphere, she said, noting the release of only 1% of the gas could make an impact. "The very shallow water column and weakening permafrost" could lead to the doubling of methane in the atmosphere in "a matter of decades," Shakhova suggested. THE AMOUNT OF PERMAFROST METHANE (WHITE ON THE MAP) AND METHANE HYDRATES (BLUE UNDER THE WHITE), ARE ESTIMATED TO AVERAGE AROUND 2 KILOMETERS DEEP. MOST OF THESE AREAS ARE VERY SHALLOW, AS YOU CAN SEE BY THE DEEPTH GRAPHS BELOW, AND THE BIG TOPOGRAPHICAL GRAPH OF THE ARCTIC CIRCLE AND ARCTIC OCEAN. SEMILTOV, ET AL, HAVE PROVEN THAT THE AMOUNT OF METHANE REACHING TO THE SURFACE FROM DEEP ALONG THIS SIBERIAN SHELF IS VERY HIGH. THE WATERS AROUND THESE AREAS ARE OVERWHELMED ALREADY, BY THE AMOUNT OF METHANE BEING RELEASED. FURTHER, THE ATMOSPHERE IS ALREADY SATURATED, RESULTING IN VERY LITTLE ABSORTION OF METHANE IN THE OCEAN OR THE ATMOSPHERE. RESULTING IN MOST OF THE METHANE REACHING THE MID ATMOSPHERE LEVELS.   AMAZINGLY FRIGHTENING VIEW OF THE REMAINING MULTI-YEAR ICE FORMED LONG AGO, BREAKING UP ALONG THE NORTH WEST SIDE OF GREENLAND. WITH "COMPLETELY ICE FREE ARCTIC!" DUE TO "THE LATENT HEAT EFFECT OF FUSION" "THE METHANE TIME BOMB," "HOT STUFF" "THE SIBERIAN METHANE MONSTER" EXPLODES! BY 2027! 2025?    The above image shows Arctic sea ice extent from November 5 to December 24, a period when Arctic sea ice is growing in extent. The red line shows 2024 sea ice extent through November 23, 2024. Dots mark Arctic sea ice extent on November 23 for the respective year. On November 23, Arctic sea ice extent was lower only in 2016, which is worrying, since El Niño conditions were dominant in 2016, whereas La Niña conditions are now dominant. The current La Niña is predicted to be weak and short-lived, as illustrated by the image below, from NOAA.  The image below shows Antarctic sea ice extent during the months September and October, highlighting extent in 2023 and 2024, as compared to extent averages in previous decades.  As illustrated by the above image, Antarctic sea ice extent in September and October 2023 & 2024 was much lower than in previous decades, a huge difference that occurred during a period when little or no sunlight was reaching Antarctic sea ice. On November 9, 2024, Antarctic sea ice extent was 14.99 million km², a record low for the time of year. Global sea ice typically reaches its annual maximum extent around this time of year, as Arctic sea ice expands in extent. On November 9, 2024, global sea ice extent was 23.34 million km², a record low for the time of year and well below the 24.15 million km² on November 9, 2023.  Higher ocean heat in combination with higher air temperatures over the Arctic Ocean are two drivers behind the slow growth in Arctic sea ice extent, which is in turn keeping global sea ice extent low.  The above compilation of four images by the University of Bremen illustrates the decline in Antarctic sea ice thickness from August 27, 2024, to November 22, 2024. More than 1.5°C above 1903-1924 for 16 consecutive months  The above image, created with NASA data through October 2024 while using a 1903-1924 custom base, illustrates that the monthly temperature anomaly has been more than 1.5°C above this base for 16 consecutive months. The red line shows a trend (2-year Lowess Smoothing) associated with recent data and the trend indicates that the anomaly is rising. How appropriate is the use of a 1903-1924 base? Using a different base can make a lot of difference. As illustrated by the image below, the temperature anomaly for February 2024 can be as high as 1.89°C when using a 1904-1911 base.  A recent study argues that existing estimates of ocean temperatures for the period 1900–1930 are too cold. When adjusting ocean data upward, the anomaly compared to this period would come down, so in order not to downplay the temperature rise, it's important to put this into perspective. As the image below shows, differences between ocean and land data for the period 1880-1898 are even larger, which is important since the period 1880-1898 is part of the period that the IPCC has selected as pre-industrial base.  While adjusting ocean data for 1921-1943 makes sense, it is even more important to use the most appropriate base as pre-industrial and to adjust the temperature rise from pre-industrial accordingly. When using a genuinely pre-industrial base, anomalies such as the above-mentioned 1.89°C for February 2024 will exceed 2°C, as discussed at the pre-industrial page.
The 1951-1980 base for the maps is NASA's default base, but neither 1951-1980 nor the above 1903-1924 is pre-industrial. As said, anomalies from a pre-industrial base are higher.  Jet Stream distortion As a result of the narrowing temperature difference between the Arctic and the Tropics, the Jet Stream gets distorted. The image below shows a distorted Jet Stream (250 hPa) over the North Atlantic on November 11, 2024.  Precipitation The image below shows an atmospheric river stretched out over the North Atlantic from the Tropics to the Arctic with high rainfall over the North Atlantic and snowfall over Greenland on November 11, 2024.  Water vapor The image below shows a forecast for November 12, 2024, with precipitable water anomalies at the high end of the scale over the Arctic Ocean.  Feedbacks The image below illustrates how multiple feedbacks can interact and jointly contribute to further acceleration of the temperature rise.  There are many feedbacks and other mechanisms active and they are interacting on top of driving up temperatures individually. Albedo change is a feedback that can have a huge impact. The currently very low global sea ice extent is a self-reinforcing feedback, as it results in less sunlight getting reflected back into space and more heat getting absorbed by oceans. Extra water vapor is another self-reinfocing feedback, since water vapor is a potent greenhouse gas. These are just some of the feedbacks that can contribute to further acceleration of the temperature rise, as discussed in an earlier post. Carbon dioxide keeps rising

"The Limits to Growth: A Final Warning" tells you about the authors work since the early seventies, my work since 1980, and the stage of the "science of overpopulation analysis." Dr. Jorgen Randers, "2052: A Global Forecast for the Next Forty Years," and Lester Brown, "World on The Edge," have portended the fate of the world, due to overpopulation since the seventies!
