Finland remained the happiest nation for the eighth year in a row, while Mexico and Costa Rico ranked among the top 10 for the first time since the report was first published in 2012. "In 2023, roughly 1 in 4 Americans reported eating all of their meals alone the previous day — an increase of 53% since 2003," the report said. "Dining alone has become more prevalent for every age group, but especially for young people." Data reviewed for the report indicates major differences in the rates of meal-sharing around the world, with sharing meals having a positive effect on wellbeing. Another factor contributing to America's drop in the rankings, as well as the rankings of some European countries, was "the rise in political polarization and votes against 'the system,'" the report said. "The country-wide evolution of happiness and trust is highly associated with the rise in the likelihood of voting for anti-system parties in Western Europe and the United States," the authors wrote. Mexico, Costa Rica enter the top 10 for first time A key reason for the rise in Mexico and Costa Rica's rankings appeared to be family household size. "Latin American societies, characterized by larger household sizes and strong family bonds, offer valuable lessons for other societies that seek higher and sustainable wellbeing," the report said. The report compared Mexico to European countries, explaining that even though it is poorer, "larger households imply a potential advantage to build positive social interactions within the household, which could partially counterbalance the differences in income with Europe." In Europe, 23% of households were single-person, while in Mexico, only 11% were single-person, according to data cited in the report. "In both Mexico and Europe, the highest average life satisfaction is reported by people who live in households with four to five members," the authors wrote. "We also observe an inverted U-shaped relationship. Average life satisfaction is lower for people in single-person households as well as households with six or seven members." Dropped wallet experiment The Gallup World Poll asked people in 2019 if they thought others would return a lost wallet, and found that "people are much too pessimistic about the benevolence of others." "When wallets were dropped in the street by researchers, the proportion of returned wallets was far higher than people expected," the report said. The belief that others would return the lost wallets also contributed to a country's ranking. The Nordic nations, including Denmark, Finland, Norway and Sweden, ranked in the top 10 countries and were among the top places for expected and actual return of lost wallets, the report said. "The wallet data are so convincing because they confirm that people are much happier living where they think people care about each other," John F. Helliwell, an economist at the University of British Columbia and a founding editor of the World Happiness Report, said in a statement. Trump is Creating His Own Personal Legal Strike Force With his speech at the DOJ, Trump officially declared his intention to reshape the legal system according to his whims and will. ELIE MYSTAL POLITICS / MARCH 19, 2025 Late last week, Donald Trump went to the Department of Justice and, once again, threatened his political enemies with unlawful prosecutions. Referring to himself as “the chief law enforcement officer in our country,” he called for the agency to prosecute everybody from former special counsel Jack Smith to MSNBC and CNN to (apparently) anybody who writes or says mean things about him or his pet judge, Aileen Cannon. Even lawyer Norm Eisen, cofounder of The Contrarian (a freaking Substack), was singled out as a potential target. This was, in many respects, standard operating procedure for Trump who, let’s not forget, called for his first political opponent, Senator Hillary Clinton, to be locked up. Calling for legal vengeance against his political enemies has been a central theme of all of Trump’s speeches since he came down his gilded escalator. Trump has articulated his plans to go after his political opponents with legal actions time and again, but what’s significant about this version of his hour-long, rambling stump speech was where he gave it: inside the “Great Hall” at the Justice Department as the actual attorney general, Pam Bondi, and the FBI director, Kash Patel, looked on in rapt attendance. Only two other presidents have spoken in the hall this century: Bill Clinton, when he was trying to drum up support for his disastrous and racist 1994 crime bill, and George W. Bush, when he dedicated the building to Robert F. Kennedy (the one without the brain worms or the submission kink for measles). Presidents historically maintain a respectful distance between themselves and their attorneys general (unless they’re brothers) to avoid the perception that the DOJ’s actions are politically motivated. Trump broke from this tradition to lay out a clear agenda to turn the DOJ into his personalized legal strike force. With the speech, he officially declared his intention to reshape the legal system according to his will, and whims. Trump’s hysterics at the DOJ are part of a larger piece: to go after the lawyers who might oppose him. At the DOJ, he highlighted Smith and Eisen as his enemies, but Trump has also issued two executive proclamations decrying the “risk” from specific law firms: Perkins Coie and Paul Weiss. He revoked security clearances for lawyers who work for both those firms, and is trying to prevent the government from contracting with any of their lawyers. Neither of those firms have done anything other than represent clients with legitimate claims against Trump, or his MAGA cabal, but in Trump world that is apparently a violation of his new legal world order. Trump wants to silence the lawyers, and he wants to use the lawyers at the Department of Justice to do it. One imagines the bad-faith actors now running the Justice Department will gladly comply. Trump has gone out of his way to populate the DOJ with people of low character who will serve his will and not the law. As happens so often with Trump, his speech at the DOJ has left us in the dangerous limbo zone between what he says he can do, what he can actually do, and what he can’t do but will do anyway. Trump (or his sock puppet Bondi) cannot order the prosecution of his political enemies who have committed no crimes—at least he can’t under the traditional understanding of law and justice. But if he does, who will stop him? The federal government’s paramilitary police forces are now under the control of Trump, Bondi, and Patel. If they send their jackboots to round up Norm Eisen (or me, or you), who is going to tell them “no”? The courts? Ask Mahmoud Khalil how long it takes to be released from federal detention, even when your arrest is unlawful and you’ve committed no crime. Ask any one of the 137 Venezuelans, who were shaved and deported in a direct violation of a court order, whether the federal courts can “stop” Trump. On Monday, Trump doubled-down on his DOJ speech by declaring that Joe Biden’s preemptive pardons for people who had investigated Trump are “VOID, VACANT, AND OF NO FURTHER FORCE OR EFFECT” (all-caps in the original German). Clearly, this move is meant to set the stage for Trump to prosecute these people, which was essentially what he ordered the DOJ to do last week. I could tell you that no president can revoke the pardons of a previous president, if that makes you feel better. But I can also tell you that the presidential pardon power is largely untested in courts—and preemptive pardons are certainly untested—and Trump controls the Supreme Court. Again, saying that Trump “can’t” do something doesn’t actually stop Trump from doing it. As with every fascist regime throughout history, the point of Trump’s personal hijacking of the law enforcement apparatus is fear. Trump is trying to quell resistance to his junta by threatening prosecutions of anybody, especially the lawyers, who oppose him. He doesn’t actually have to prosecute everybody, or even most people. The threat alone will chill a lot of people, and he only needs to pull off one or two high-profile prosecutions to prove that he’s not bluffing. He and Bondi are not, for instance, going to charge everybody who defaces a Tesla dealership with domestic terrorism, but if he gets the DOJ to do it to just one person, then everybody will think twice before cursing out a Cybertruck owner in the parking lot of a CVS (which is not a crime, and there is absolutely no video evidence that I would do such an oddly specific thing). Trump’s antics at the DOJ, and his larger agenda of “lawfare” against his political opponents, should alert those opponents to one crucial reality about living under a fascist regime: The law is not on our side. Too many liberals have lulled themselves into a false sense of security that “the law,” however defined, is on the side of justice. It’s not. It never is when dictators take control. In authoritarian regimes, the law always ends up on the side of the oppressor, not the oppressed. You cannot fight fascists through the legal system, because fascists always change the law to make fighting them a crime. That is what Trump announced at the DOJ last week. The institutions now work for the bad guys. Adjust your expectations, and your resistance strategies, accordingly.

Arctic sea ice area Arctic sea ice area has been at a record daily low since the start of February 2025.  Arctic sea ice area was 1.28 million km² lower on March 5, 2025, compared to March 5, 2012. The comparison with the year 2012 is important, since Arctic sea ice area reached its lowest minimum in 2012. Arctic sea ice area was only 2.24 million km² on September 12, 2012. The size of the sea ice can be measured either in extent or in area. What is the difference between sea ice area and extent? Extent is the total region with at least 15% sea ice cover. Extent can include holes or cracks in the sea ice and melt ponds on top of the ice, all having a darker color than ice. Sea ice area is the total region covered by ice alone. Blue Ocean Event (BOE) A Blue Ocean Event (BOE) occurs when the size of the sea ice falls to 1 million km² or less, which could occur in Summer 2025 in the Northern Hemisphere for Arctic sea ice. If the difference between 2012 and 2025 continues to be as large as it is now, there will be a Blue Ocean Event in September 2025. A BOE is often defined as crossing a tipping point that is crossed when sea ice reaches or falls below 1 million km² in extent. However, it make more sense to look at sea ice area, rather than at sea ice extent, since sea ice area is a more critical measure in regard to albedo. Loss of sea ice area (and thus of albedo) is a self-reinforcing feedback that causes the temperature to rise, resulting in further melting of sea ice and thus further accelerating the temperature rise. A BOE occurs when the size of the sea ice falls to 1 million km² or less, which could occur in Summer 2025 in the Northern Hemisphere for Arctic sea ice. Arctic sea ice area was only 1.24 million km² above a BOE on September 12, 2012. If the difference between 2012 and 2025 continues to be as large as it is now, there will be a BOE in September 2025. Arctic sea ice volume and thickness Volume and thickness are two further measures to assess the health of Arctic sea ice, and they are critical in regard to the latent heat buffer, which decreases as sea ice, permafrost and glaciers disappear. Latent heat is energy associated with a phase change, such as the energy consumed when ice turns into water. During a phase change, the temperature remains constant. As long as there is ice, additional heat will be absorbed by the process of ice turning into water, so the temperature doesn't rise at the surface.  The amount of energy absorbed by melting ice is as much as it takes to heat an equivalent mass of water from zero to 80°C. The energy required to melt a volume of ice can raise the temperature of the same volume of rock by as much as 150ºC. Warmer water flowing into the Arctic Ocean causes Arctic sea ice to lose thickness and thus volume, diminishing its capacity to act as a buffer that consumes ocean heat entering the Arctic Ocean from the North Atlantic. This means that - as sea ice thickness decreases - a lot of incoming ocean heat can no longer be consumed by melting the sea ice from below, and the heat will therefore contribute to higher temperatures of the water of the Arctic Ocean. Similarly, there is a point beyond which thawing of permafrost on land and melting of glaciers can no longer consume heat, and all further heat will instead warm up the surface. 
in turn threatening increased loss of permafrost, resulting in additional emissions, as illustrated by the above image. The image on the right shows that Arctic sea ice volume has been at a record daily low for more than a year. Loss of the latent heat buffer constitutes a tipping point. Beyond a certain point, further ocean heat arriving in the Arctic Ocean from the Atlantic Ocean and the Pacific Ocean will no longer be able to be consumed by melting sea ice from below. The danger is especially large in the East Siberian Arctic Shelf (ESAS), which contains huge amounts of methane and which is hit strongly by the temperature rise. The image below shows that high February 2025 sea surface temperature anomalies are present in the Arctic Ocean, including over ESAS.  The bathymetry map in the right panel of above image shows how shallow seas in the Arctic Ocean can be. The water over the ESAS is quite shallow, making that the water can warm up very quickly during summer heat peaks and heat can reach the seafloor, which comes with the risk that heat will penetrate cracks in sediments at the seafloor. Melting of ice in such cracks can lead to abrupt destabilization of methane hydrates contained in sediments.  Large abrupt methane releases will quickly deplete the oxygen in shallow waters, making it harder for microbes to break down the methane, while methane rising through waters that are shallow can enter the atmosphere very quickly. The situation is extremely dangerous, given the vast amounts of methane present in sediments in the ESAS, given the high global warming potential (GWP) of methane immediately following its release and given that over the Arctic there is very little hydroxyl in the air to break down the methane.  High temperatures The image below shows two trends that indicate that the temperature continues to rise and that the rise may accelerate soon. The black linear trend shows a rise of 0.5°C over a time span of about 3 years. The red non-linear trend warns about further acceleration of the temperature rise exceeding 2°C over the same period.  The black trend is a straight line, while the non-linear trend can bend and thus follow short-term variables more closely, such as ENSO variations (El Niño/La Niña), sunspots and further mechanisms that could rapidly speed up the temperature rise in the near future.  NOAA doesn't expect a new El Niño to emerge soon (image above), which makes it even more significant that temperature anomalies currently are this high. One of the mechanisms that is pushing up temperatures is albedo loss, partly due to low sea ice. The image below shows that the global sea ice area has been at a record daily low since the start of February. The associated albedo loss constitutes an important self-reinforcing feedback mechanism accelerating the temperature rise.  If the global sea ice area continues to be at a record daily low over the next few months, an Arctic Blue Ocean event may well occur later this year. For more on mechanisms accelerating the temperature rise, view this earlier post. Ominously, very high temperature anomalies are forecast over the Arctic Ocean for November 2025.  Climate Emergency Declaration The situation is dire and the precautionary principle calls for rapid, comprehensive and effective action to reduce the damage and to improve the situation, as described in this 2022 post, where needed in combination with a Climate Emergency Declaration, as discussed at this group. Like ‘mercy’ in Shakespeare’s Merchant of Venice, caring is “twice-blessed” – it blesses those who give and those who receive. In this report, we investigate both of these effects: the benefits to the recipients of caring behaviour and the benefits to those who care for others. There is a wealth of evidence about the extent of caring behaviour around the world. In the Gallup World Poll, people are asked if, in the last month, they gave money to charity, if they volunteered, and if they helped a stranger. They were also asked, in 2019, if they think other people would help them by returning their lost wallet. Some key findings jump out of the data. First, people are much too pessimistic about the benevolence of others. For example, when wallets were dropped in the street by researchers, the proportion of returned wallets was far higher than people expected. This is hugely encouraging. Second, our wellbeing depends on our perceptions of others’ benevolence, as well as their actual benevolence. Since we underestimate the kindness of others, our wellbeing can be improved by receiving information about their true benevolence (see Chapter 5). Third, when society is more benevolent, the people who benefit most are those who are least happy. As a result, happiness is more equally distributed in countries with higher levels of expected benevolence (see Chapter 2). Finally, benevolence increased during COVID-19 in every region of the world. People needed more help and others responded. This ‘benevolence bump’ has been sustained since then. Despite a fall from 2023 to 2024, benevolent acts are still about 10% above their pre-pandemic levels (see Chapter 2). Benevolence also brings benefits to those doing the caring and sharing. This works best if the motivation is to help others (rather than to feel good yourself), if the act is voluntary, and if it has an obvious positive impact on the beneficiary. All this is shown in Chapter 2, where the usual country rankings of happiness are supplemented by rankings for benevolent acts and expected wallet return. There are many ways in which we care and share with each other. Perhaps the most universal example is sharing meals. As Chapter 3 shows, dining alone is not good for your wellbeing. People who eat frequently with others are a lot happier and this effect holds even taking into account household size. The increasing number of people who eat alone is one reason for declining wellbeing in the United States. Another important form of caring and sharing is the family. Latin American societies, characterised by larger household sizes and strong family bonds, offer valuable lessons for other societies that seek higher and sustainable wellbeing. In Chapter 4, we see that happiness rises with household size up to four people, but above that happiness declines. Notably, people living alone are much less happy than people who live with others. Trends towards increased loneliness are most evident among young people. In 2023, 19% of young adults across the world reported having no one they could count on for social support, a 39% increase compared to 2006. However, as we have said, they often underestimate the benevolence of other people. After a powerful intervention, students at Stanford University became much happier when given evidence of the kindness of their peers (see Chapter 5). The opposite of happiness is despair, which can lead to death by suicide or substance abuse – also known as ‘deaths of despair’. Fortunately, deaths of this kind are falling in the majority of countries, though not in the United States or Republic of Korea. As Chapter 6 shows, deaths of despair are significantly lower in countries when more people report donating, volunteering, or helping strangers. The degree of benevolence in a country also has a profound impact on its politics (see Chapter 7). Populism is largely due to unhappiness. But whether populists are on the left or the right depends on trust. People who trust others veer to the left, those who do not veer to the right. For many people, how to express their benevolence is a serious question. Where should you donate your money? The logical answer is to generate as much extra happiness (or reduced unhappiness) as possible. This means choosing charities that yield the most happiness per dollar. Chapter 8 explains this method and illustrates it across a range of interventions. Even in low-income countries, mental health treatments emerge as an especially effective way of spending money. The image below shows two trends that indicate that the temperature continues to rise and that the rise may accelerate soon. The black linear trend shows a rise of 0.5°C over a time span of about 3 years. The red non-linear trend warns about further acceleration of the temperature rise exceeding 2°C over the same period.  The black trend is a straight line, while the non-linear trend can bend and thus follow short-term variables more closely, such as ENSO variations (El Niño/La Niña), sunspots and further mechanisms that could rapidly speed up the temperature rise in the near future. Will a new El Niño emerge in the course of 2025? The probabilities of El Niño conditions are expected to rise in the course of 2025. Moving from the bottom of a La Niña to the peak of a strong El Niño can make a difference of more than 0.5°C, as illustrated by the image below.   Will a new El Niño emerge in the course of 2025? The image below shows NOAA ENSO probabilities issued March 13, 2025.  The image below shows that the temperature has been rising strongly recently in the Niño 3.4 area (inset). 
Sunspots are predicted to peak in July 2025. The temperature difference between maximum versus minimum sunspots could be as much as 0.25°C. There are further mechanisms that could accelerate the temperature rise, such as reductions in aerosols that are currently masking global warming. The temperature rise comes with numerous feedbacks such as loss of sea ice, loss of lower clouds, more water vapor in the atmosphere and changes in wind patterns and ocean currents resulting in extreme weather events such as forest fires and flooding to increase in frequency, intensity, duration, ubiquity and area covered, and oceans taking up less heat, with more heat instead remaining in the atmosphere. The self-reinforcing nature of many of these feedbacks could cause the temperature rise to accelerate strongly and rapidly within a few months time. Furthermore, the impact of one mechanism can trigger stronger activity in other mechanisms. Loss of Arctic sea ice volume (above image on the right) in combination with high temperatures (image below) can trigger destabilization of hydrates at the seafloor of the Arctic Ocean, resulting in eruptions of huge amounts of methane further speeding up the permafrost thaw. Seafloor methane alone could raise temperatures by more than 1°C very rapidly.  The above image shows that the Northern Hemisphere reached a temperature of 11.97°C, a record daily high and about 1.5°C higher than 1979-2000. Climate Emergency Declaration The situation is dire and the precautionary principle calls for rapid, comprehensive and effective climate action to reduce the damage and to improve the situation, as described in this 2022 post, where needed in combination with a Climate Emergency Declaration, as discussed at this group.
