MUST FOLLOW! https://arctic-news.blogspot.com/ Mechanisms behind a steep rise in temperature The image below shows the temperature rise from end 2022 through February 23, 2025, with trends added.  The shading in the above image reflects the presence of El Niño conditions (pink shading) that push up temperatures, La Niña conditions (blue shading) that suppress temperatures, or neutral conditions (gray shading). Such short-term variables are smoothed out in the black linear trend that shows a steady rise of about 0.5°C over the three years from end 2022 to end 2025. This rise of 0.5°C over just 3 years (black linear trend in above image) is a much steeper rise than the black linear trend in the image below, which shows a rise of 1.1°C over the 81 years from 1941 to 2022.  As said, the recent rise in temperature depicted by the black linear trend in the image at the top is much steeper than the rise from 1941-2022 in the above image. The image at the top also features a red trend that warns that an even steeper rise could occur soon, as a result of the joint impact of at least ten mechanisms. 1. ENSO changes - a transition away from the current La Niña conditions 2. Sunspots - higher than expected and reaching their peak in the current cycle in July 2025 3. Cooling aerosols - being reduced 4. Earth's Energy Imbalance - very high and rising, as illustrated by the image below.  5. Greater albedo loss - as a result of sea ice loss and loss of lower clouds  The above image is from Berkeley Earth and also features in an earlier post, illustrating the importance of Antarctic Sea ice loss in accelerating the temperature rise and thus also in reducing lower clouds. 6. More water vapor - as the temperature rise from pre-industrial turns out to be higher The above image illustrates that the February 2024 temperature was potentially 2.75°C above pre-industrial. A much higher rise from pre-industrial than the rise mentioned in the IPCC assessment reports would come with much more water vapor in the atmosphere. A 2.75°C rise corresponds with almost ⅕ more water vapor in the atmosphere, since 7% more water vapor will be in the atmosphere for every 1°C warming. Extra water vapor will further amplify the temperature rise, since water vapor is a potent greenhouse gas. 7. Ocean heat - as it becomes increasingly hard for ocean heat to reach deeper parts of the ocean, due to stratification and to changes in ocean currents, resulting in more heat accumulating at the surface instead. This mechanism is discussed in a 2024 post and also in a more recent facebook post. 8. Latent heat buffer loss - as sea ice, permafrost and glaciers disappear. Latent heat is energy associated with a phase change, such as the energy consumed when ice turns into water. During a phase change, the temperature remains constant. As long as there is ice, additional heat will be absorbed by the process of ice turning into water, so the temperature doesn't rise at the surface.  The amount of energy absorbed by melting ice is as much as it takes to heat an equivalent mass of water from zero to 80°C. The energy required to melt a volume of ice can raise the temperature of the same volume of rock by as much as 150ºC. Warmer water flowing into the Arctic Ocean causes Arctic sea ice to lose thickness and thus volume, diminishing its capacity to act as a buffer that consumes ocean heat entering the Arctic Ocean from the North Atlantic. This means that - as sea ice thickness decreases - a lot of incoming ocean heat can no longer be consumed by melting the sea ice from below, and the heat will therefore contribute to higher temperatures of the water of the Arctic Ocean. Similarly, there is a point beyond which thawing of permafrost and melting of glaciers can no longer consume heat, and all further heat will instead warm up the surface. 
More incoming heat therefore threatens to reach the seafloor of the Arctic Ocean and destabilize methane hydrates contained in sediments at the seafloor, resulting in eruptions of huge amounts of methane, as illustrated by the above image and as included in the point below. 9. More emissions from the environment - as sinks turn into sources, and as there are more emissions from methane hydrate eruptions, from thawing permafrost, from flooded areas, and from fires (including fires in forests, peatland, grassland, urban waste in backyards and landfills, and fires in buildings, especially in warehouses containing flammable materials and chemicals), as temperatures keep rising. 10. More emissions from human action and inaction - as more people start to realize how dire the situation is and as they seek to occupy the most habitable areas left. A recent analysis estimates that just the emissions from the war in Ukraine since Russia’s full-scale invasion rival the annual emissions of four European nations combined (i.e. Austria, Hungary, Czech Republic and Slovakia). More emissions may also result from more biofuel and wood getting burned in vehicles, heaters and power plants, as it becomes harder to obtain fossil fuel and as the grid shuts down, due to conflicts and people no longer showing up for work. Why this mattersCEOs are getting paid more because of their leverage over corporate boards, not because of their skills or contributions they make to their firms. Exorbitant CEO pay has contributed to rising inequality in recent decades as it has likely pulled up the pay of other top earners—concentrating earnings at the top and leaving fewer gains for ordinary workers. How to fix itPolicies that limit CEOs’ ability to collude with corporate boards to extract excessive compensation are needed to prevent the U.S. from becoming a winner-take-all society. These policies could include reinstating higher income tax rates at the very top, using tax policy to incentivize lower CEO pay, making shareholder votes on CEO compensation more binding, and using antitrust enforcement and regulation to rein in the market power of the largest firms. Charting the problem Chief executive officers (CEOs) of the largest firms in the U.S. earn much more today than they did in the mid-1990s and many times what they earned in the 1960s or 1970s. They also earn far more than the typical worker,1 and their pay—which relies heavily on stock-related compensation—has grown much more rapidly than a typical worker’s pay. Rising CEO pay does not reflect a rising value of skills or contributions to firms’ productivity. What has changed over the years is CEOs’ use of their power to set their own pay. In economic terms, this means that CEO compensation reflects substantial “rents” (income in excess of actual productivity). This is concerning since the earning power of CEOs has been driving income growth at the very top—a key dynamic in the overall growth of inequality. The silver lining in this otherwise unfortunate trend is that CEO pay can be curtailed without damaging economywide growth. Key findings
Measuring CEO compensation We focus on the average compensation of CEOs at the 350 largest publicly owned U.S. firms (firms that sell stock on the open market) by revenue. Our source of data is the S&P Compustat ExecuComp database for the years 1992 to 2023, and survey data published by The Wall Street Journal for selected years back to 1965. We maintain the sample size of 350 firms each year when using the Compustat ExecuComp data.2 A note about the Compustat data It is worth noting some complexity of the Compustat data at the outset. Compustat tracks data (including measures of CEO compensation) for all publicly traded firms in the United States across a range of years (we use it back to 1992 and find it reliable since that year). But public companies sometimes move out of the data universe of publicly traded firms. They might go private, go out of business entirely, or be bought by another firm. When a firm stops being public, it does not simply drop out of the sample from that point on; it is also removed from previous years’ samples in the Compustat database. Optimally, we would like the Compustat data to provide information on the largest 350 firms that were public in a given year. Instead, the data provide information on the largest 350 firms that were public in a given year and that continue to be public, according to the most recent data. This explains why some of our data—even for years relatively far in the past—change with each iteration of this report. Further, even the pre-1992 data that we use rely on a procedure that “backcasts” Compustat to pre-1992 data that originate from other sources. Therefore, even the pre-1992 data can change with each successive round of Compustat. In practice, the degree of change to previous years’ data caused by this reshuffling of firms in the Compustat universe is quite small, but it is not zero. Two ways of measuring CEO compensation We use two measures of CEO compensation: one based on compensation as “realized,” and the other based on compensation as “granted.” Both measures include the same measures of salary, bonuses, and long-term incentive payouts. The difference lies in how each measure treats stock awards and stock options—major components of CEO compensation that change value from when they are first provided, or granted, to when they are realized. The realized measure of compensation includes the value of stock options when they are actually realized or exercised, capturing the change in value from when the options were granted to when the CEO invokes the options, usually after the stock price has risen and options value has increased. The realized compensation measure also values stock awards at their value when vested (usually three years after being granted), capturing any change in the stock price as well as additional stock awards provided as part of a performance award. The granted measure of compensation values stock options and restricted stock awards by their “fair value” when granted. This fair value must be estimated based on several assumptions about the future path of stock prices, interest rates, and other variables. Compustat estimates of the fair value of options and stock awards as granted are derived from the Black-Scholes model. For details on the construction of these measures and benchmarking to other studies, see Sabadish and Mishel (2013). In some sense, realized measures of pay are backward-looking, while granted measures are forward-looking. Realized measures of stock-related pay in 2023 are essentially measuring how much money CEOs were able to bring home based (largely) on the past year’s stock options and awards. Granted measures of stock-related pay in 2023 are essentially estimating how much new options and awards are likely to pay off in future years. Because neither measure perfectly maps onto a measure of how much a CEO “earned” in a single particular year, reporting both can be useful for understanding the full picture. Trends in CEO compensation Table 1 presents the trends in inflation-adjusted realized and granted CEO compensation for selected years from 1965 to 2023 (columns 1 and 2).3 Real changes in the stock market are as measured by the S&P 500 Index and the Dow Jones Industrial Average in columns 3 and 4. In general, CEO compensation follows the movement of the stock market The last year of data saw a striking exception to that phenomenon: The drop in CEO compensation from 2022 to 2023 was large compared with very little change in the stock market over that period. Realized CEO compensation (reported in Table 1) declined by 19.4% to $22.2 million from 2022 to 2023.4The granted measure of CEO compensation, which values stock options granted in 2023 (not those exercised), also fell by 14.1%. While it is somewhat puzzling for CEO pay to fall as the stock market largely held steady, it’s possible that the shift in stock-related pay away from options played a role, and this overall divergence will likely turn around with the stock market gains so far in 2024. Longer-term trends in CEO compensation Table 1 also presents the longer-term trends in CEO compensation for selected years from 1965 to 2023.5 Our discussion of longer-term trends focuses mostly on the realized compensation measure of CEO compensation—the measure preferred in most economic analyses. In general, CEO compensation follows the movement of the stock market but tends to exceed even the largest stock market gains.

29 times Donald Trump did what Putin wanted Whose side is he on? It’s hard to keep up, so here’s a handy guide to America’s new policy of close alignment with the Kremlin. But the United States president doesn’t say the same about Vladimir Putin, even though his main opponent died in jail a few weeks before Putin won a rigged election last year. In the past few weeks, Trump and his team have also undermined NATO, backed far-right politicians in Europe and vowed to hit the European Union with a trade war for its “very unfair” treatment of the U.S. No wonder a growing number of European officials and diplomats think the American president is really on Russia’s side. But Trump’s world moves fast, and it’s hard to remember everything. So here’s a recap of 29 times Trump has sided with Putin in his first month back in power.
1. Picking up the phone: Almost three years after Russia’s unprovoked, full-scale invasion of Ukraine in 2022, Trump decided it was time to re-establish direct contact between the president of the United States and Putin, a leader facing U.S. and EU sanctions, as well as an International Criminal Court arrest warrant for crimes against humanity and genocide. So he picked up the phone on Feb. 12 for a 90-minute chat. 2. Praising Putin like he deserves total respect: “I want to thank President Putin for his time and effort with respect to this call,” Trump said afterward. “We both reflected on the Great History of our Nations, and the fact that we fought so successfully together in World War II,” he said. “We agreed to work together, very closely, including visiting each other’s Nations.” 3. Saying he’d “love” to see Russia back in the G7 (which would make it the G8, but who’s counting): “I’d love to have them back. I think it was a mistake to throw them out,” he told reporters in the Oval Office the day after the Putin call. He said the same in his first term. But that was before Russia’s full-scale invasion of Ukraine. 4. Letting Putin keep loads of Ukrainian territory: Trump’s Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth rejected Ukraine’s goal of reclaiming all the land Russia has taken since 2014 as “unrealistic.” That whipped the rug out from underneath Ukraine in any future negotiation. Hegseth also gave Putin exactly what he wanted by saying Kyiv wouldn’t be joining NATO either. 5. … then warning Russia has loads of Ukrainian territory: Trump himself then noted that Russia now holds “the cards” in peace talks “because they’ve taken a lot of territory.” 6. Conceding to Putin’s wish for no NATO mission in Ukraine: More from Hegseth, who said any troops from NATO countries who serve in Ukraine won’t be covered by the alliance’s “Article 5,” which states that an attack on one member is an attack on all. 7. Ruling out sending U.S. troops to Ukraine: Another Putin-pleaser from Hegseth. 8. Telling Europe, which has relied on American protection since 1945, to take care of itself: Russia worries about American troops fighting a war to stop them from reclaiming their old empire. War with the Europeans? Not so much. 9. Holding unconditional talks with Russia in Saudi Arabia: Trump gave Putin generous concessions on NATO and Ukrainian territory to Russia before the talks even started. He could have demanded a Russian ceasefire as a precondition to the first talks between the two sides’ top diplomats. He didn’t. In fact, there were apparently no preconditions at all. Kyiv and its allies say there must be no talks “about Ukraine without Ukraine.” Whatever. 11. Refusing to let Europe in either: Brussels keeps complaining Europe is being cut out of the peace process. America doesn’t care, and Putin is fine with that. 12. Saying Zelenskyy “started” the war: Well, he didn’t. Russia started the war, but has been trying to blame Zelenskyy for it ever since. Now it has the White House claiming the same. 13. Saying Zelenskyy is incompetent: Everyone’s entitled to a view. It just happens that this one serves Russia’s purpose of undermining Zelenskyy’s legitimacy at home. 14. … While not really criticizing Putin much at all. 15. Saying Putin can be trusted and wants peace: Don’t worry, Putin is solid on Ukraine, Trump told the BBC. Maybe he forgot all the times Russia said it wasn’t going to invade. 16. Calling for elections in Ukraine: Russia likes elections in nearby countries because it can meddle with the process, and has been hoping to get the chance to install a new government in Kyiv since before the start of the war. Trump says Zelenskyy should call a vote ASAP. The problem is, there’s a war on, you know? 17. Defunding election monitors and cyber agencies: Only people who are sticklers for free and fair democracy like having elections monitored for interference, with pesky officials poking around on polling day. Putin doesn’t need them anyway. 18. Calling Zelenskyy a “dictator” (and not in a good way). 19. Looking ahead to future U.S.-Russia “investment” deals: That was the readout from those talks in Riyadh. A top Russian official told POLITICO there was particular interest in joint Arctic energy projects. 20. Ditching democracy NGOs: The Kremlin has long complained that U.S.-funded NGOs are intelligence fronts that stir up “color revolutions” in former Soviet republics, including the 2014 Maidan uprising in Ukraine. Trump’s team has now cut all funding to pro-democracy programs as part of its efforts to dismantle USAID. Slamming Europe for its failures on migration: Trump has said Europe needs to get its act together to stop out-of-control migration. His Vice President JD Vance launched an all-out assault on the continent over just about everything else in his first outing at the Munich Security Conference last weekend. It’s likely to have been music to Putin’s ears. 23. Vance backing Călin Georgescu’s victory in Romania: That’s right, the U.S. VP sided with the candidate who won the first round of Romania’s presidential election last year following a suspected Russian hybrid attack and a highly dubious social media influence operation. The Romanian Constitutional Court was so concerned it annulled the election. 24. Attacking Germany for its firewall against the far right: Vance didn’t mince words. “If you’re running in fear of your own voters, there is nothing America can do for you,” he said. 25. Backing the AfD in Germany’s election: Trump’s best billionaire buddy Elon Musk openly endorsed the far-right Alternative for Germany (AfD) party and its candidate Alice Weidel to be chancellor in Sunday’s election. The AfD is set for its best ever result, according to polls. Many AfD supporters are sympathetic to Moscow. Intelligence services have warned of a Russian campaign to disrupt the vote. 26. Musk backing Reform UK in Britain: Reform UK leader Nigel Farage has a history of making favorable comments about Putin (something his centrist opponents have used to attack him). 27. Objecting to the phrase “Russian aggression” in a draft G7 statement on Ukraine. 28. Winning the presidential election: Ok, so this one was really in Trump’s interests first. But the Kremlin is certainly pleased that Trump beat Harris to the White House. 29.
